    I rescued an abandoned lime green chryptomeria left in a nursery pot out in summer heat..it was almost 3 ft tall...with a flexible trunk...I let it recoup and wired it in a S shape bonsia...a very determined tree it flushed out vigorously. I kept it as a bonsia for a few years but its spirit was so strong...to be a free and wild growing tree...I took off all the wire and straightened the trunk over 2 years as it was still flexible, and just last year I set it free where it could grow as it desired..it is so happy like a prisoner set free......it is about 7 ft tall now and 30 feet away from a 50 year old 80 ft tall dark green beautiful chryptomeria my Mother planted. I Love your program thank you.

    Hi Peter, we found you on RUclips and now my 9 year old son is hooked on Bonsai. We even obtained special permission for him to do the a master class in Bonsai at the Mount Lofty Botanical Garden (Adelaide, Australia). Since then he has made over 10 bonsai and wants to be a sensai. Thank you so much for inspiring us. We are very grateful.

    In the summer I purchased an untrained large bush from a bonsai nursery which I have been trying to identify for months. I was told it was a juniper but finally a bonsai fb group suggested it was a Cryptomeria so I saught you out on youtube to confirm and learn about this species. Thanks to you I now know how to approach this, thank you so much.

    The Crypomeria I bought from somewhere 6 years ago turned out to be a mostly yellowish, occasionally light green, elegans variety (was just labelled simply as Cryptomeria Japonica, no specific variety details). It has grown very well, from pencil-thin to 2" at the base, but the growth is seriously leggy, having reached over 6ft tall before giving it a chop (it kept blowing over into the pond!), and the foliage quite course, certainly the complete opposite to those lovely, dark green, compact examples shown here. I think one day I'll have to look for a more suitable example.

    Japanese cedar is probably the only conifer that can be pollarded or even coppiced! In Japan they grow them for timber - through pollarding every 20 years or so. They grow beautiful straight poles of wood. I wonder if they grow well in white shady space? 🤔 I have a very beautiful twisted variety (rasen) which I was gonna plant near the house, in a place which has sunshine in the morning, bit not much in the afternoon. Not sure if it will grow well... perhaps I will plant it there for a season and see what happens - otherwise I will dig it out and plant it somewhere else 😄

    Now's the time to pinch the pads and thin out the foliage. Do you ever use pinching on your trees? Scissor work across the green usually turns the ends brown after a week or so :(

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 лет назад

      Pinching browns the shoots. But when you use scissors you need to go into the wood and not shear across the foliage

    • @bonsa1guy
      @bonsa1guy 5 лет назад

      So how are pads maintained and shaped Peter? Won't they just grow and eventually get too big or do you just cut them off and start again?

    • @taitjones6310
      @taitjones6310 5 лет назад

      @@bonsa1guy Start with fast growing varieties that will sprout again from old wood. They are very forgiving, so you don't have to be afraid of cutting too much off. Elms are good. I've never kept a cryptomeria though, if you are asking about those specifically.
