  • Following on from my quick look at the PSG9080 signal generator I compare its output to some other types of generators and discuss the importance of this.

Many thanks for this. As expected, especially up at 20MHz. However I agree that at this price the performance seems ok and the features are outstanding.

This is really interesting. Makes me want to stay-UP all night fiddle with harmonics very short but precise and perceptive. …. You are becoming a a mithological being 😀 more of this type… and I am a fan 😸

For minimal distortion most synthesized function generators there is an optimum output level.
My Siglent SDG2122X is very good at 0 dBm in the audio range. I have not tried it for RF. For very low distortion at lower signal levels I run it at 0 dBm and use a passive enumerator on the output.

Yes that is true but 20MHz is only a fraction of the range of some of the generators so as I say in the video it is very difficult to compare different generators. There are many other reasons but my real point is not to get too distracted by something that may not be important to the user.

For the PSG9080, replacing output amplifiers with higher quality ones would probably lower the harmonic distortion. That is what I did with my FY6800 generator. Now, the harmonics are no less than 50dB down. I wonder, what op-amps are used in the output of PSG9080.

@@jim9930 i bought s PSG9080 naively thinking that it has a 14-bit DAC output. If i knew that it has R/2R DAC, I wouldn't! It shows ~1% second harmonic anywhere below 1MHz.
Another quirk I found with PWM output. Pressing the Enable button produces a DC output fot several hundreds msec, slowly rising in amplitude, before it starts making pulses. If used for driving power electronics (or a laser), it can blow the load.
I think the price for this device should be 1/2 of what it is.

My PSG9080 drifts very badly. I adjust it using the adjustment feature, it more or less corrects it, then it wanders off frequency again. Useless above audio frequencies.

I recently bought a PSG9080 and noticed the output voltage settings did not seem very accurate. Since my most accurate instrument is a 40,000 count DMM, I wanted to check the calibration of the PSG9080 against it. I thought the most accurate way to do this would be to use the DC "waveform" so it wouldn't involve any inaccuracies in measuring RMS of a sine wave. But when I set the PSG9080 to DC, I found that the amplitude control did not change the DC level. I had to use the offset control to change the DC level. I did not like that because the offset setting only has 10 mV resolution rather than the 1 mV resolution of the amplitude control. Have you seen this?

But what are harmonics at 1kHz?

Could the power supply cause some of the noise and could it be improved with a linear power supply?

I use a 10dB per division scale when using my SA. Makes it so much easier to double check readings. What setting was yours on? Somewhere between 6.5 & 7.5?

Is the Juntek quality enough for generating the 2 tones requires for testing SSB cb radios for linearity into tge radiis microphone?
    Cheers

Why did you have the TTI set to 10MHz for the comparison when the other 2 generators were set to 20MHz?

Siglent SDG1032 current price is only 260 Euro at siglent EU.
So the PSG9080 is 200 Euro, nice looking rubbish ??
Thanks for video, I saved 200 Euro and will go for the Siglent.
