I open and check my tanks every two years. Check the levels of the sludge and scum with a homemade PVC/gauze dipstick. After my last pump out twenty years ago, still only two inches of sludge on the bottom. Put a riser over that cement lid, and make it easier to access.

Had not opened mine in six years. I new the filter was clogged. Need to keep up on it.
