Neva Jane Langley was the penultimate Miss America to be crowned before television coverage began. BeBe Shopp, Miss America 1948, is now the sole surviving Miss America from the pre-television era.
Neva Jane Langley, 1933 - 2012, Miss America 1953 " the year of my birth " Passed away today November 18, 2012. She sure was Beautiful, so glad we can still see her.
Block was sort of a sad case. I've read those What's My Line panelists were making tons of money and Block threw it all away. You notice Daley's comment "We haven't met a girl you wouldn't like" and then, like the other person said, you can see Daley was pretty pissed at the end.
Ive been told that Arlene wore an eyepatch twice and once she had to wear sunglasses. The sunglasses were because she sunburned her eyes no less while sitting at the pool. The eyepatches she wore because once when her son was young he put his finger in her eye and the other time was coz she gave herself a papercut on the eyeball (OUCH!) Im guessing this is when her son did it since its probably 1952.
First time of about four times that Arlene Francis appears on live TV with an eye patch due to eye injury. There is in YouTubia a clip of a 1960 broadcast where the panel meets a young female justice of the peace from Arkansas at which Arlene wears an eye patch.
I heard an interview with Bennett Cerf and there was general consensus that Hal Block was a cad. Cerf explained that Block was trying to be funny, but always ended up coming off as crude. That was in fact what got him kicked off the show - he crossed the line one too many times.
Just the other day I saw some clip about the modern miss universe women and I guess we’re so used to all the implants and Botox and tanning beds that we forget what was considered beautiful before all of that. It’s very refreshing to see a normal person just be beautiful without all all that other nonsense
Must be September 14, 1952 -- two reasons: (1) The football player is introduced by Daly as being a member of "the champion Los Angeles Rams" -- the Rams won the NFL title in '51: &, (2) Daly shares that he is to play that Thursday, September 18 in a special game (sponsored by Kilgallen's employer, no less ...)
It's a shame you don't have the first game of that show. A lady from Paris who dances the Can-Can. It was cute how Bennett guessed it. Hope you will post it.
None of the other panelists liked Hal Block. John Daly disliked him as well. Daly would occasionally refer to Dorothy, Arlene and Bennett by their first names, but Hal Block was always 'Mr. Block'. Look at Daly's expression at 8:09, undisguised disgust at Block's crude behavior.
I agree about the rocket scientist.... but take a look at the airplane salesman form Chicago... but we are really just quibbling over details...all three were beautiful.
$250 was the rate given to the celebrity guests and was almost always given to a charity of some sorts, it has been said however that some of the celebitys who were promoting a peice of work or appeared on the network (e.g. Lucille Ball) would often appear for free.
Hal Block was out of place in the "classy" environment WML tried to put forth. At the end of the clip you can see John Daly's disgust at Hal rushing out and kissing the guest.
Classy????? Turns out the show war rigged. And, after Block was fired, he had to stay quiet for a while, and when that requirement passed, he began to chirp - a lot.
That guy that got so fresh with her and jumped up and kissed her had been told repeatedly to stop doing and saying such things,, from dalys look i'd say this was that ole boys last appearance in WML
second time (on youtube) this happened; Dorothy guessed a baseball umpire As other comments here make clear; Arlene was accident-prone; especially with her eye
most celebrity contestants were there to plug their projects they were doing. I personally think all contestants got the 50 bucks..maybe not the prizes mentioned.
Pro football is a pretty generic occupation as far a WML goes. You would think that if football was the occupation there would be something else beyond that to guess.
( 7:57 ) cringe. and this was one of Hal Block's stock in trade, big wet kisses on very classy ladies. Gil Fates wrote in his book that the man planted big wet ones on the likes of Helen Hayes and Sister Kenny, among others -- and once referred to a pretty young nun in full Dominican habit as "You doll."
$350 or there abouts, that's more than $2 000, and less than $10 000 in today's American Dollars, proberbly closer to the latter given the recent economic developments.
$50 was A LOT more money back then. Which is why when the quiz show '21' was giving away 10's of thousands as prize money, it got the attention of even the US Congress.
It is quite sad that women cannot have a minor accident anymore without someone thinking it could be abuse. It is a good thing to be observant but let’s not exaggerate.
I can see why the producers fired Block-head.
I believe this is the first time on what's my line history that the panel guessed the contestant line correctly at the beginning well done panel.
Especially when you consider the guy was married to Arlene's cousin.
Neva Jane Langley was the penultimate Miss America to be crowned before television coverage began.
BeBe Shopp, Miss America 1948, is now the sole surviving Miss America from the pre-television era.
These clips are so addictive!!
So sorry to hear she passed away-Beautiful and classy lady- Thank you for posting!
That Block guy was very inappropriate and Daly looks a bit ticked off.
Very true.
Neva Jane Langley, 1933 - 2012, Miss America 1953 " the year of my birth " Passed away today November 18, 2012. She sure was Beautiful, so glad we can still see her.
Very beautiful
What a classless buffoon that Block guy was. No wonder Goodson-Todman fired him.
John Daly looks angry at the end.
It seemed to me like he didn’t care for Hal grabbing the young lady and kissing her. I’ll agree It was rather boorish.

Hal never knew where the limits were.

WOW! That might be the most attractive Miss America I've EVER seen!!!
I agree. He always sort of an awkward out-of-place presence. It was a good move to replace him.

"your shoulders MAAAN"
John daly looks unhappy at end of video.
Yup. Block is an ass bag.
Yes a Miss America from Atlanta, my hometown!
This episode aired September 14, 1952; Hal's final episode aired March 1st.
How pretty was Miss America!
But it pretty much ended when she started talking. It’s not the accent, it’s like she cannot talk properly.
I heard an interview with Bennett Cerf and there was general consensus that Hal Block was a cad. Cerf explained that Block was trying to be funny, but always ended up coming off as crude. That was in fact what got him kicked off the show - he crossed the line one too many times.
He found out what Daly's line was!
@@HunterShows "Yes, thank you for that pun Bennett, and we are all better off for having heard it" :D
She was beautiful and classy!
And she was also related to this guy as he married Arlene's cousin.
The football player tho. 👀 hot
Miss America was smoking hot!! VERY pretty, classy Young lady!!

I love Arlene's CBS eye patch!

But all in all it's a great show! Thanks!
@DragonSporks Celebrity contestants did receive an appearance fee--not sure of the amount but IIRC it was in the few-hundred-dollar range.
Hal Block should have never been part of this great show.
Block interviewed her before the show. Surprise.
It's a shame you don't have the first game of that show. A lady from Paris who dances the Can-Can. It was cute how Bennett guessed it. Hope you will post it.
Especially when he knew in advance. Turns out the panel got tips in advance as to the show's guests.
justafanintexas baloney

5:20 John couldn't wait to have a "small conference" with her!
I agree about the rocket scientist.... but take a look at the airplane salesman form Chicago... but we are really just quibbling over details...all three were beautiful.
You know she cannot be too famours if she doesn't have to disguise her voice, and Daly gave away that she was beautiful.

Well, Hal Block was certainly being Hal Block in this one, wasn't he?
I, too, liked Block's comment: What's My Lineman? But it got no response from anyone on the show. Did no one else hear it except the TV audience?
Whats With bennett Cerfs hair???
interesting; Daly doesn't shake hands when meeting the guests
She was awesome looking
Hal Block was out of place in the "classy" environment WML tried to put forth. At the end of the clip you can see John Daly's disgust at Hal rushing out and kissing the guest.

John Daly is all over that guy!
Why did Arlene have a shiner?
John's getting fresh and Hal Block
I don't think Mr. Daly got Fresh at all. To me...at all times he was a gentleman
while i'm not fond of hal block, i enjoyed his "What's My Lineman?" comment
Arlene does it again!
Yes, she guessed the occupation of her cousin's husband.
second time (on youtube) this happened; Dorothy guessed a baseball umpire
As other comments here make clear; Arlene was accident-prone; especially with her eye
most celebrity contestants were there to plug their projects they were doing. I personally think all contestants got the 50 bucks..maybe not the prizes mentioned.
the contestants received $500 plus whatever they won from the panel

Personally, I think the rocket scientist looked cuter, and if you think that's sarcasm, watch the video.
She injured it at home somehow !

@ShawDAMAN exactly he always ruins it..!
Miss America is not in the entertainment business?!?
The pageant is more entertainment, the role of Miss America is more humanitarian or ambassador of goodwill.
She was a bit clumsy along with a car accident or two. And no she wasn't punched by her hubby. (seems like that's always the next question)
Hal was funny
Hal Block was a jag off. He was fired from the show for his lewd behavior.
Plus you weren't anybody until you made WML.
$50 was A LOT more money back then. Which is why when the quiz show '21' was giving away 10's of thousands as prize money, it got the attention of even the US Congress.
No, what got Congress interested in "21" was the rumors that it was fixed.
@whato1986 her kid stuck her!
It was a traffic accident.
Correct. She bumped her head when the cab she was riding in abruptly stopped. This was before seat belts.
They're all dead, let it go.
Class never dies!
statman99
Yes, well I'm sure Hal Block is really ashamed of himself now that you've expressed your indignity. Good job.
$500
There were times Hal block was a real jerk.🙃🙃🙃🙃
Shows like this didn't pay that much, about $400 back in the 80's. It's exposure! Massive exposure.
I can't stand Hal Block at least on this show. Argh. He almost ruins it
I can't remember a single instance where he acted "normally" for the entire show!
don't hate me....but John Daly....liked the guys secretly
@5star555555555 he's a stinker ..
Did it ever occur to anyone that arlene was a victem of domestic abuse?! Sunburned eyeballs?? Papercut?? Seriously?
They all knew she was in a car accident. It was highly publicized at the time (a woman in the other car was killed).
@@Finians_Mancave dear lord, how did that happen?
It is quite sad that women cannot have a minor accident anymore without someone thinking it could be abuse.
It is a good thing to be observant but let’s not exaggerate.
Hal Block or whatever his name is is terrible. Chauvinistic and crude.
miss america has horrible hand writing! lol
From back in the day when Miss America was actually good looking. Today, one must be an Asian Indian with tattoos and no arms to win.
