Not just a simple ritual, but a warning for the future
Glaciers formed at 0.1mm per 100 years… melting at a rate of 10m per year
Glacier funerals are being held around the world.
In 2021, a glacier funeral was held in Iceland. The subject of the glacier funeral, which marked the end of a 700-year-old glacier, was the ‘Oak Glacier’ located northeast of Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik.
A glacier funeral was also held at the foot of the Alps in northeastern Switzerland. Since 2006, the Pizol Glacier has lost 80-90% of its original size and is virtually dead.
Glaciers are disappearing all over the world. Venezuela’s last glacier, Switzerland’s Pizol Glacier, their disappearance has a major impact on the ecosystem and life of local communities.
Glacier funerals are not just a simple ritual. They are a warning for the future.
