Yeah, I think if they went with four enemies and turned off the sprite priority rotation feature then this would be great. Around 2:48 shows it's not a problem. It would probably still be fine with five if they still turn off the sprite priority rotation feature and just let parts of the sprites drop out when necessary, although I'd need to see that in action. But four enemies would do the trick.
It would still flicker at times, but I think it would be much better overall, as you can see at 2:48 for example, where it's not really flickering with four normal-sized enemies on-screen. And, if the hacker turned off the sprite priority rotation feature, which I think actually make any sprite flickering far more obvious, it would help even further imo.
