I've been a Spencer Rattler defender for the past 3 weeks. I mostly blamed the inexperienced offensive line for not protecting him well enough to make plays but I was wrong. Rattler cannot seem to make big plays and he turns the ball over too often. Congratulations to Caleb Williams for seizing the opportunity to show his talent and what he can do for this team. I can see Lincoln Riley finding a way to use both Williams and Rattler in the future.

A few things; The reason why so many were high on Spencer before seeing him play was the fact that he was a 5 star and playing in Lincoln Riley's system. This should show everybody now that Lincoln Riley's system is not some plug and play thing. Baker Mayfield was a freshman star at Texss Tech before he got to Oklahoma. Kyler Murray was considered the greatest, or one of the greatest high school QBs of all time. Jalen Hurts started for Bama multiple years and was a seasoned vet when he got to Oklahoma. Lincoln Riley had it easy for a while. Anybody that doesn't know Caleb Williams doesn't follow ANY recruiting, even national signing days. Stop using ESPN for your recruiting stuff too. On 247 sports composite, he was ranked 7th overall. He is ranked the 102nd best overall recruit since 2002.
Williams is the real deal. The moment and 21 point deficit wasn’t too big for him like it was for Rattler. The team responded to Williams and Williams balled out.
One of the biggest problems with Spencer was he has that extremely cocky attitude, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I mean look at Johnny Manziel, love him or hate him, when he was in the game (at least at the collegiate level) he was the best player on the field and he absolutely backed it up with his play (Texas A&M vs Alabama in 2012 as an example) which made that attitude almost charming in a weird way. When you have that attitude and struggle at home against a not very good West Virginia team after just squeaking by Nebraska thanks to of one of the most insane interceptions in the programs history, on top of Oklahoma having one of the best coaching staffs to groom Heisman QBs it leaves Oklahoma fans with a bad taste in their mouth, that this guy acts like, in your words the second coming of Jesus. On top of that when you have a true freshman QB on the bench that is widely liked by just about anybody who does follow Oklahoma who comes off as a very humble ( Ironically tattooed on Spencer's arm) and likeable guy. It's just a perfect storm of both sides being better off if they go their separate ways. I wish the best of luck to him, and I genuinely mean that, but as a fan of the team, I would not like to see him start another game as a Sooner.
Interesting that you bring up Manziel because that's where my brain went. Obviously not in terms of college play but what happened when Manziel went from college to the pros. He got exposed and, due to the attitude and work ethic from the earlier level, never saw the need to change. I hope he has learned something from this experience and gets to another school.

Saw news he’s probably entering the transfer portal. He’s a lot more talented than Jalen Hurts but has a fraction of his leadership ability, and that’s why Jalen went high in the draft and Spencer is getting benched for a freshman.

Spencer will get better because of this experience. His arm talent is extraordinary and if he stays at OU he will be better for it. Lot of backups with talent have gone on to NFL and succeeded. Problem is Lincoln is most successful with a true RPO QB. Spence is a pro system QB. Just my opinion.
I remember watching this kid on Netflix and thought he had his future made to the NFL some day. I always wondered what happened to him not hearing anything about him after Netflix and now I know. All the hype got to him and took him down. Hope he at least got some education in college and can do something with that.

I first heard of Spencer Rattler while watching that Netflix QB1 documentary. I always said he was good but I couldnt help but feel that all the hype that was being generated for him and everyone telling him he was great was going to pump that ego up so much that it was not going to take much to burst the ego bubble. Like Matt, Im not a Spencer hater either. In fact, I truly always wished the best for him but there had to come a time for him to be humbled. Unfortunetly, this humbling he is going through now cost him his starting position at an elite college. I truly feel bad for Rattler but he had to be brought to earth sometime. Rattler needs to realize now that his college days are not over and he will get another chance to prove himself. However, I fear it may no longer be with Oklahoma. He can still prove that he is NFL worthy and he has a bit of time but not much because any NFL coach that was looking at him as a prospect has probably dwindled to single digit percentage. Spencer, its time to put on the big boy pants now. Your dream is not completely in the toilet so go get it if you truly want it. Best of Luck, Spencer, and I truly mean that.

Rattler destroyed Florida’s Defense with 247 and 3 Touchdowns through the air and 40 yards Rushing in a 55-20 win. That game had a lot to do with his hype this year. Caleb Williams may be a generational talent. Throws like Mahomes and Brees while Running like Adrian Peterson. Makes his players on both sides of the ball better. I hate OU, but damn I’d love to have Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams in my future. Damn Landthieves……

It's tough, you might be the man in high school. But, when you go to the next level you have to check your ego at the door until you prove yourself. Does he think he is a god on campus and everywhere he goes, and treats people like trash? Or is it mostly the media hyping him up? Would people still care about his ego if he was balling? I was looking into what was going on after watching Oklahoma @ Kansas game. I seen a Heisman contender on the sideline in his football gear while a freshman QB was playing amazing on the field and I was confused. I'm a Bama fan so I was also intrigued by this story. the main idea would be to stay focused on the goal and eliminate distractions. get the good draft pick and go on to better things, but if there is inconsistency at OU, what would happen in the NFL, where there is more publicity and distractions?
Makes you wonder if he really worked out with a QB coach this summer in Arizona, or he just went home to be with family and friends. He should have progressed this year instead of digressed. But is you watch him on Netflix QB1 and watch Caleb Williams interview in 2020 with John Hoover- you see a different mentality, maturity, and competitiveness in the two.
I'd like to address your point about Rattler not living up to the hype. I am an OU fan and I'm not saying Rattler should still be our starter. I will say that Rattler showed in his freshman year at OU that he had the potential to be great. I saw it the entire season, the issue for OU's first half of 2020 was an inconsistent run game, which is a huge part of Riely's offense. However I believe that if Rattler had played at the same level this year as he did in the second half of 2020, Rattler would be basically just be running away with the heisman, but instead of warming up the car to take him to whoever has the #1 pick, the only thing he's warming right now is the bench.
This video aged like fine wine. 2 years later Caleb drafted 1 overall. Rattler dropped from potential 2nd round to bottom of the 4th as a 3rd string flyer pick. A lot of it attributed to character concerns.
I’m a huge Oklahoma fan and have never been able to buy into the hype. Early in the season the camera would pan to CW and many of the starters were around him while Rattler was all alone. Rattler isn’t fast enough to get away from defenders and isn’t strong enough to break arm tackles. To top it all off he is more interested into looking cool and smooth. Thank God he finally played bad enough for Riley to put CW back in.
As a fan and Resident in the state of Oklahoma we do not have an O-Line. When you have a bad O-Line the best course of action is to have a mobile QB (Caleb Williams). If Rattler went to LSU or a team with a great line he would dominate.

I mean look at Johnny Manziel, love him or hate him, when he was in the game (at least at the collegiate level) he was the best player on the field and he absolutely backed it up with his play (Texas A&M vs Alabama in 2012 as an example) which made that attitude almost charming in a weird way. When you have that attitude and struggle at home against a not very good West Virginia team after just squeaking by Nebraska thanks to of one of the most insane interceptions in the programs history, on top of Oklahoma having one of the best coaching staffs to groom Heisman QBs it leaves Oklahoma fans with a bad taste in their mouth, that this guy acts like, in your words the second coming of Jesus. On top of that when you have a true freshman QB on the bench that is widely liked by just about anybody who does follow Oklahoma who comes off as a very humble ( Ironically tattooed on Spencer's arm) and likeable guy. It's just a perfect storm of both sides being better off if they go their separate ways. I wish the best of luck to him, and I genuinely mean that, but as a fan of the team, I would not like to see him start another game as a Sooner.

Interesting that you bring up Manziel because that's where my brain went. Obviously not in terms of college play but what happened when Manziel went from college to the pros. He got exposed and, due to the attitude and work ethic from the earlier level, never saw the need to change. I hope he has learned something from this experience and gets to another school.

Saw news he’s probably entering the transfer portal. He’s a lot more talented than Jalen Hurts but has a fraction of his leadership ability, and that’s why Jalen went high in the draft and Spencer is getting benched for a freshman.

When you get benched on a undefeated team as qb that is not good and its times to evaluate. Also id like to point out on 70% of plays he got sacked or threw a pick, someone was wide open within his vision. He may just either be short to see over his line or too panicky that he chokes up. I first heard of Spencer Rattler while watching that Netflix QB1 documentary. I always said he was good but I couldnt help but feel that all the hype that was being generated for him and everyone telling him he was great was going to pump that ego up so much that it was not going to take much to burst the ego bubble. Like Matt, Im not a Spencer hater either. In fact, I truly always wished the best for him but there had to come a time for him to be humbled. Unfortunetly, this humbling he is going through now cost him his starting position at an elite college. I truly feel bad for Rattler but he had to be brought to earth sometime. Rattler needs to realize now that his college days are not over and he will get another chance to prove himself. However, I fear it may no longer be with Oklahoma. He can still prove that he is NFL worthy and he has a bit of time but not much because any NFL coach that was looking at him as a prospect has probably dwindled to single digit percentage. Spencer, its time to put on the big boy pants now. Your dream is not completely in the toilet so go get it if you truly want it. Best of Luck, Spencer, and I truly mean that.

It's tough, you might be the man in high school. But, when you go to the next level you have to check your ego at the door until you prove yourself. I wonder is his ego and him not playing so well the problem. Or, is it just him not playing so well? There's a difference. Does he think he is a god on campus and everywhere he goes, and treats people like trash? Or is it mostly the media hyping him up? Would people still care about his ego if he was balling? If not, then his ego is not the problem, it is him not playing well. This is a tough situation where you better be mentally strong to handle what literally seems like the whole world hates you. Unfortunately, Spencer is having to learn the hard way about being humble, and that nothing is guaranteed. I'd like to address your point about Rattler not living up to the hype. I am an OU fan and I'm not saying Rattler should still be our starter. I will say that Rattler showed in his freshman year at OU that he had the potential to be great. I saw it the entire season, the issue for OU's first half of 2020 was an inconsistent run game, which is a huge part of Riely's offense. However I believe that if Rattler had played at the same level this year as he did in the second half of 2020, Rattler would be basically just be running away with the heisman, but instead of warming up the car to take him to whoever has the #1 pick, the only thing he's warming right now is the bench.
Definitely beating on the kid, but I guess it’s due to him not really giving people a reason to like him as a person.
This video aged like fine wine. 2 years later Caleb drafted 1 overall. Rattler dropped from potential 2nd round to bottom of the 4th as a 3rd string flyer pick. A lot of it attributed to character concerns.

I'm an OU fan, Spence Rattler is his own hype. He didn't do too great last year, the D saved us last year (scary as that sounds for OU)
I’m a huge Oklahoma fan and have never been able to buy into the hype. Early in the season the camera would pan to CW and many of the starters were around him while Rattler was all alone. Rattler isn’t fast enough to get away from defenders and isn’t strong enough to break arm tackles. To top it all off he is more interested into looking cool and smooth. Thank God he finally played bad enough for Riley to put CW back in.
As a fan and Resident in the state of Oklahoma we do not have an O-Line. When you have a bad O-Line the best course of action is to have a mobile QB (Caleb Williams). If Rattler went to LSU or a team with a great line he would dominate.
Spencer and Caleb have a difference of .31 seconds in their 40 yard dash. Considerable difference but to say Spencer isn’t mobile is complete bullshit
