I didn't really like the movie (not that I disliked it but let's say it was forgetable for me). But I decided to give the original production a chance, as it is one of the few we can have in good quality in youtube. And I was surprised that it became one of my favourite musical immediately. I think the movie missed why it was so great when they adapted it.
I feel personally attacked that Little Shop of Horrors was not put in the same place as Hairspray and Chicago. That movie WAS, IS and will ALWAYS be epic.
Probably because that one is already a classic. I thought she’s picked out Chicago and Hairspray because they’re newer and so they’re not generally considered among the “classic” lists even though they deserve to be.
You're absolutely spot on with movie musical trailers. And this has been an issue for years. Even Moulin Rogue (which had like one line sung in its trailer), Sweeney Todd (had the teeny tiniest bit of singing in its trailer), heck even friggin Phantom of the Opera (which is so blatantly gonna be a musical based on the title) the trailer was mostly just dialogue with some of the score in the background, and if there was singing it was just the odd line or two and thats it. It's like they're selling it based on "deep voiced whispered dialogue" to sound more "dramatic". It's strange.....
I would MUCH rather a pro shot of Wicked than a movie musical. A lot of what makes Wicked for me is the stage magic. The lights and ensemble and costuming i fear won't come across well in a movie. Also I could never understand why LA LA Land was so popular. I love a movie musical and love the actors in it but it fell really flat for me.
I am WITH YOU on High School Musical 3!!! And omigod I was so scared that you were going to say you hated Hairspray and Chicago! You have no idea how relieved I am that you also think they're classics
I actually agree with La La Land. Sebastian came across as insufferable at best, his chemistry with Mia was limited, and I was relieved when it was revealed that they ultimately didn't end up together. They were a toxic couple, in my opinion.
totally agree with what you said about the wicked movie - i think the reason the musical is so iconic is because of the amazing experience of seeing those elphabas and glindas singing their asses off live on stage, and while i also agree with you that actors shouldn't sing live in movie musicals, i don't think seeing someone lip sync to the wizard and i or defying gravity would have the same effect
When you started talking about Doris Day I was half expecting you to say James Corden would be the next Doris Day and then you actually talked about him
The only thing that offended me was you spelling out that it's been almost 20 years since Wicked debuted, which caused my elderly, brittle bones to disintegrate.
My unpopular opinion, I know Amy will be mad at me but I loved all of the mamma Mia movies, I don’t know if it’s just the music or not but I love the casts and I love ABBA music so freaking much. My mums seen the stage version and has seen the movies and she loves them too.
I was sitting here getting worried about your opinion on Hairspray but then you were like best movie haha! Omg so true about the trailers for musicals hiding the fact that they’re musicals. Like for Into the Woods, funny enough, my aunt who hates musicals with a passion (I know 😳) took me to go see it but I hadn’t realized that she didn’t know it was a movie musical. The entire time she just kept whispering to me “why didn’t you tell me this was a musical? Why is this a musical? Oh my god I hate this”. I’m like dude calm down 😂😅
Amy (and anybody who wants to answer) what is your opinion on the Moulin Rouge movie musical? I absolutely love it, it is one of my favourites and Come What May is a very special song to me.
I LOVE the hsm trilogy and it made my childhood and I fully believe that the third one is the best, the songs, the plot, how amazing the characters look, it all 10/10!! And I will fully stand by my belief about HSM 3 and will argue it to my grave
i agree with the hamilton one soo much, a movie wouldn't be as magical as the show. the dancing, the simplicity is what makes everything so majestic. can't imagine watching it as a normal movie with characters in different costumes and different settings and stuff
I completely agree about movie musical trailers. A lot of them don’t really seem to highlight the music in the trailers, which is weird. Which makes me really nervous for tick tick boom, because I love the soundtrack. So much.
AMY!! I’m so glad you made the point about the volume and sound mix in La La Land. 100% agree with you. I love the movie, but since day 1, I’ve thought the sound mix was SO OFF! Another Day of Sun needed to vibrate through the cinema and blow everyone away, but instead it just kinda.. played quietly?
I get what you mean about singing live. I also wonder if singing live for multiple takes means even good singers sound worse than they are. I do have to say I Dreamed a Dream in the cinema felt incredibly raw and real to me and I think part of that was the live singing. (Although I may be alone in thinking that)
Actually, those two and Little Shop. Little Shop is overlooked but Skid Row alone is a cinematic masterpiece! And Steve Martin’s dentist is just perfection.
OMG I couldn't agree more with you when you talked about High School Musical 3!!! Scream is probably my favorite song from any Disney Channel Original movie, it's just so good!!! 😍
I would love to know what you think of the new costume/set design of the new Wicked production in Germany. I am so excited to see a fresh take and it looks amazing imo
Sideways made great videos about why live singing is bad in movie musicals : one about Les Mis and one about Cats 2019 I honestly recommend them (his video about Into the Woods was great too, also snugboy's video is a great explanation as to why the movie doesn't work). BTW I'm still going through your videos, have you ever watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ? It's a great musical TV show about mental health and systemic sexism even if you wanna hit the main characters for a while XD I generally think before adapting musicals as a movie they should release pro recording of the musicals themselves and only adapt those that would make sense as a movie. Like Rodgers&Hammerstein's cinderella is a good example (granted it was a telefilm first) but the 1997 version is fairly different from the stage version. They only kept the fairy tale angle and ran with it 100%. And while I love the stage version, the movie is one of my favorite cinderella adaptations ever. Like Hairspray and Chicago (and even LSofH tho I haven't seen it in a while so I feel less confident about it), they used the movie format to their advantage instead of trying to adapt the show in spite of it which is probably the biggest problem most of the time.
On the La La Land front, I think it's gotten lost in the narrative partly because of Dear Evan Hanson and Greatest Showman, but Pasek and Paul only wrote the lyrics for La La Land. Justin Hurwitz wrote the music. Hurwitz also wrote the score, which essentially echoes most of the songs so I suspect Pasek and Paul had to work within a certain blue print.
1. HSM3 is the best hands down. 2. I’m beyond stressed about the Wicked Movie cause I feel like it won’t have the right vibe. 3. I think heathers would be a great movie musical. With the new London songs (manly I SAY NO) 4. Hope your doing well ❤️
Pasek and Paul only did the lyrics for La La Land. Justin Hurwitz wrote the music. I think the first two songs are good but after that the story doesn’t really need music
Yes Amy......Hairspray 💗- I AGREEE I also agree about ur trailer comment. To me all the ad should say is "This is a musical" and I'd go see it. I honestly saw the 'Dear Evan Hanson' trailer n thought they'd made it straight. I actually had to research it after to check if it was a musical, n that irritates me.
since a bunch of movies have been made into musicals recently, I'm curious what movies you think would make a good stage musical? I think Coneheads & Wayne's World would be so much fun; also I always wanted a Devil Wears Prada musical, & now they're making one, with music by Elton John! so I'm excited about that. and since Carrie worked so well, I would love a Stepford Wives musical.
I agree with everything you said!!! Chicago is the best movie musical of all time ISWIS!! As far as Wicked, i think an animated movie would be so cool, but not irl
La la land is my all time fav film omggg it’s just so perfect! Ryan learnt the piano for the role! Damien Chazelle is an insanely talented director and having done lots of research into it for college you really see how he was inspired and how clever it really is! Also to meet Emma stone is the top of my bucket list so if anyone knows how to make that happen, let me know 😂
I do think a Wicked movie could actually really work. But what production companies need to let go is the A-list celebrity. It's better to have a big name Broadway star (or even an up and coming singer) to portray the roles than to throw a lot of money on an A-list actor, who might be able to sing, but maybe not even. Like for example, I love Emma Watson and her acting was good, but her singing in Beauty and the Beast just didn't cut it for me. Where I do think the movie could match or even improve the musical version is in the stage design. I don't remember much about Oz, the Great and Powerful, because it just didn't stick, but what I did remember is the amazing settings and even the SFX to create Oz. Similarly to that, they could make magic in the design of their settings for Wicked.
Amy, I completely agree with your opinions on the Into the Woods movie and trailers for movie musicals! With Into the Woods, I felt that Disney kind of dropped the ball on how the film could successfully be adapted, because that hindered the tonal shift that occurs in the second half of the story (of course, most films that are made nowadays utilize a three-act plot structure, but musicals that are adapted to film sometimes don't have that luxury to easily translate from a two-act plot structure to a three-act plot structure.) And with movie musical trailers, there have definitely been some strong ones over the last decade (the many In the Heights trailers come to mind, as they perfectly captured what the movie was gonna be like, and they also weren't shy to make it clear that it was a musical with singing and dancing), but there have also been some poor trailers too (You Will Be Found was used as the overarching theme for the Dear Evan Hansen trailer, but seeing Ben Platt singing for maybe five seconds in the trailer doesn't translate to a film that will be chock full of songs when it's released ~ same goes for the tick, tick...BOOM! trailer as well, and that’s a Jonathan Larson piece, so you know there's gonna be a lot of music!)
Yesssssss. I was scared as to what was going to come next when you mentioned Hairspray and Chicago XD I genuinely enjoy those. I rewatched Hairspray a ton after it came out. The remake anyway, I could not get into the original @.@ I'm here for these opinions. I feel validated lol I want to add something. I dunno if this is unpopular or not. I would really like more recordings of musicals. I have seen a handful in person, but there are a TON I've missed. I will happily pay money to just be able to watch the damn performances and not some bootleg recording @.@ Like, Shrek has done it. Hamilton has done it. I will always prefer being physically there to watching a recording, but I'll take a recording over missing out entirely ya know? It just bothers me that it feels kind of like...exclusive. Oh well, if ya didn't catch the show during these specific years, guess you're shit out of luck unless it comes back around to MAYBE have a chance to go see it. Come on man...
Amy! You're not alone! HSM 3 is definitely the best one, the music just hits different. Camp Rock was the first thing I watched when I got Disney Plus cause I was so excited to see it again....yikes, it really doesn't hold up, does it? Unfortunate but true
I absolutely agree that High School Musical 3 is the BEST of the three. La La Land is one of my favourite films and I simply can't fault it. Would've loved to hear your opinion on Mamma Mia! You might've mentioned it in a previous video, so maybe i'll have a little look around.
I remember going to see the The Last Five Years at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and it was fan-fricken-tastic. Truly changed my hopes for the future of movie musicals. The storytelling from stage to screen was so well done.
I totally agree on the into the woods movie! I saw the movie first and I didn't really like it, but as this musical is one of the few (if not the only one) that we can find on youtube with a good recording, I decided to watch. And I was surprised to see how much I like it. The musical, though it has serious themes, doesn't try to be realistic, it is funny and parodies the fairytale tropes. On the other hand, the movie cut most of the jokes and parody to have a more serious and dark tone (except in agony maybe), but they kinda lost the serious themes in the process. So in the end they cut all the fun, for something more superficial or shallow, and it didn't work for me.
I didn't know where to post this so I put it here. I know musical stuff is your thing, but if you ever wanted to do a non-musical, I have a couple suggestions for you. There is Tin Can Bros Wayward Guide . . . (not a musical, but has familiar StarKid faces in it and is pretty good); Tin Cans Solve-It Squad Returns (essentially Scooby Doo gang in the future and is not a musical, but does have an opening musical number with a few StarKids and Brian Rosenthal being amazing as an entire supporting cast); and Shipwrecked Comedy's Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Invite Only Casual Dinner Party/Gala For Friends Potluck (not a musical, but has a couple familiar StarKid faces in a Clue-inspired story focusing on authors as the characters). Then there is a web series called World's Worst Musical which features some StarKid favorites in musical episodes. Hope that helps. I thought you would like to know. Love your reactions. 🙂
I personally still think HSM 2 is the best, but one of my friends thinks the third is the best, so you're not alone! And I totally agree that "Scream" is one of the most iconic parts of the whole trilogy. I rewatched it recently and I was LOSING MY MIND the whole time it was so good lol. Also, though I do kind of like some aspects of having people with softer singing voices star in it, I mostly agree with you about La La Land. I think it would be awesome as a stage show with Pasek and Paul adding some bigger songs.
i discovered Stephen Sondheim through the into the woods movie, i went down a rabbit hole and fell in love with sweeney todd and assassins and (the better version of into the woods) don't tell movie into the woods tho hehe... so i commend the movie for finding me new things to love :#)
My unpopular opinion-Sharpay, while a hilarious character is absolutely a villain. She sabotages not one but two competitions over the three films. Remember, Troy and Gabriella just got the callback for being late, Sharpay just didn’t want competition which is why she messed with the callback. True villain behavior. Not to mention how she treated Ryan. She’s a good villain, but a villain nonetheless
I totally agree. I love Sharpay but she was still a villain for me. She tried to stop them from auditioning just because she did not want competition, that's not something a hero does.
I’m apprehensive about a Wicked movie but for different reasons. I think it CAN be done fabulously. However I don’t always trust Hollywood. Will they get a famous person who is passable as singing and ruin it? Will they take out songs we love or change the ending? That’s what scares me. If it’s done right though, it’ll be great!
Me when I first watched the Into the Woods proshot: “I didn’t like that- except for Agony” Theatre kids watching the Into the Woods movie: “I didn’t like that- except for Agony”
fully agree with everything you said EXCEPT HSM3 being better. everyone's on holiday, in the sun, living their best lives in the second one. that's what makes it great for me!
You are SO right about the Into The Woods movie! I've said elsewhere that some musicals, like Into The Woods and Wicked, would be better off adapted in two installments. Perhaps Into The Woods would have been a long shot since it's not as well known outside of theatre fandom, but they could totally do it with Wicked!
I think I agreed with every point you made except that one about HSM2, it is the best I will hear no word about it. You're bang on right about Hamilton though, so many musicals would just get ruined in a film adaptation and Hamilton is one of them.
With trailers what I'd like to see are things like what 'In the Heights' did or possibly have a regular trailer that shows scenes from the movie underscored by an instrumental arrangement of one of the most popular or groups numbers, wherein the last few seconds it shows the whole cast singing and/or dancing. Unpopular opinions: 1. Tom Hooper should never be allowed to direct a movie musical again. 2. There needs to be a musicologist or a vocal director who can not be fired for telling the director how musicals work. 3. No more stuffing an original song in for an Emmy. I get that you want another award nomination, but it is coming at the emotional core and pacing of the show. (I'm looking at you live-action Disney and 'Cats'.)
film companies need to realise that we want pro shot musicals rather than movie adaptations!!
THIS COMMENT JUST WON COMMENT OF THE CENTURY!! 🏆 Seriously though, we NEED more pro shots 😭
I want both😂 just give me all the musicals please
Yes I want that! I can't see the musical live, and pro shot are my daydream. A movie is nice but it is not the same.
Proshots are everything
It's not usually film companies that are the obstacle but unions that protect the artists and their work. They're coming around to figuring it out.
I agree that the Hamilton pro shot is better than an actual movie version. I don't want a full on movie

Omgomg sweeney todd is one of my favourite films ever 🥲🥲
And HSM 3 is the absolute worst one IMO oh no oh no
I love sweeney Todd hehe ❤
Very much here for the Doris day appreciation
same
@@velvetgh0st no no no HSM3 is by far the superior HSM
I feel personally attacked that Little Shop of Horrors was not put in the same place as Hairspray and Chicago. That movie WAS, IS and will ALWAYS be epic.
LEGIT
Probably because that one is already a classic. I thought she’s picked out Chicago and Hairspray because they’re newer and so they’re not generally considered among the “classic” lists even though they deserve to be.
Facts only
You're absolutely spot on with movie musical trailers.
Honestly, I would just be happy with a Wicked pro shot. I'm really scared for that movie.
YESS! I DON'T WANT A HAMILTON MOVIE EITHER!!
I agree, and I just did not care about them as characters or their relationship at all
totally agree with what you said about the wicked movie - i think the reason the musical is so iconic is because of the amazing experience of seeing those elphabas and glindas singing their asses off live on stage, and while i also agree with you that actors shouldn't sing live in movie musicals, i don't think seeing someone lip sync to the wizard and i or defying gravity would have the same effect
When you started talking about Doris Day I was half expecting you to say James Corden would be the next Doris Day and then you actually talked about him
I agree with Hamilton, I have NO idea how it would even work as a movie
I have been saying this about Hairspray for *years* ! It's. A. Classic.
The only thing that offended me was you spelling out that it's been almost 20 years since Wicked debuted, which caused my elderly, brittle bones to disintegrate.
would love to see a Jukebox musical unpopular opinions.
My unpopular opinion, I know Amy will be mad at me but I loved all of the mamma Mia movies, I don’t know if it’s just the music or not but I love the casts and I love ABBA music so freaking much. My mums seen the stage version and has seen the movies and she loves them too.
2 of my favorite movie musicals of all time
😆😆I love when you say "High School Musical- Trilogy " it obviously is, but sounds so epic with the word 'trilogy' attached. ❤Love your commentaries!
The one about movie musical trailers is SO TRUE!!
It is literally one of my favourite films of all time!
„The Prom“ better be on this list. And „Rent“. I really want to know your opinions on these two.
I get what you mean about singing live. I also wonder if singing live for multiple takes means even good singers sound worse than they are. I do have to say I Dreamed a Dream in the cinema felt incredibly raw and real to me and I think part of that was the live singing. (Although I may be alone in thinking that)
Amy: these are my unpopular opinions
Me: *agrees with almost every single one*
This shirt is everything. That's all... I'm not even past the sponsor yet... and I love your shirt.
Haha eugene jumping on the floor at 5:45 made me laugh so hard. I looked away for a sec and was like wtf was that
Omg Hairspray & Chicago are my favourites - was so worried when you mentioned them that it wouldn’t be a good thing! They’re the BEST.
Actually, those two and Little Shop. Little Shop is overlooked but Skid Row alone is a cinematic masterpiece! And Steve Martin’s dentist is just perfection.
Hairspray is not only my favorite movie musical it’s genuinely one of my favorite movies. I grew up with it and it’ll always be one of my faves❤️
It's a great musical TV show about mental health and systemic sexism even if you wanna hit the main characters for a while XD
I generally think before adapting musicals as a movie they should release pro recording of the musicals themselves and only adapt those that would make sense as a movie.
My heart was pounding when you said bout hairspray cos I thought you were gonna say it was bad🤣🤣 one of my faves
With the new London songs (manly I SAY NO)
4. Hope your doing well ❤️
Pasek and Paul only did the lyrics for La La Land. Justin Hurwitz wrote the music. I think the first two songs are good but after that the story doesn’t really need music
YAY! Hairspray was my life in 7th grade ❤️ love the songs literally everything about it!! I agree with you 💯
Yes Amy......Hairspray 💗- I AGREEE
I also agree about ur trailer comment. To me all the ad should say is "This is a musical" and I'd go see it. I honestly saw the 'Dear Evan Hanson' trailer n thought they'd made it straight. I actually had to research it after to check if it was a musical, n that irritates me.
Even though I don't mind live singing in movie musicals, I actually agree with most of your other opinions! 😁
since a bunch of movies have been made into musicals recently, I'm curious what movies you think would make a good stage musical? I think Coneheads & Wayne's World would be so much fun; also I always wanted a Devil Wears Prada musical, & now they're making one, with music by Elton John! so I'm excited about that. and since Carrie worked so well, I would love a Stepford Wives musical.
Maybe "Ferris Bueller's day off"? I can see it becoming a musical.
I was about to throw hands when you said you didn't like into the woods but when you specified the movie I FULLY agree
I thought you were about to bad mouth Hairspray and was ready to start a fight! lol :) definitely one of the very best top tier movie musicals!
Unrelated but your shirt is really cool
I agree with everything you said!!! Chicago is the best movie musical of all time ISWIS!! As far as Wicked, i think an animated movie would be so cool, but not irl
Wicked deserves a high quality pro shot
With Into the Woods, I felt that Disney kind of dropped the ball on how the film could successfully be adapted, because that hindered the tonal shift that occurs in the second half of the story (of course, most films that are made nowadays utilize a three-act plot structure, but musicals that are adapted to film sometimes don't have that luxury to easily translate from a two-act plot structure to a three-act plot structure.)
And with movie musical trailers, there have definitely been some strong ones over the last decade (the many In the Heights trailers come to mind, as they perfectly captured what the movie was gonna be like, and they also weren't shy to make it clear that it was a musical with singing and dancing), but there have also been some poor trailers too (You Will Be Found was used as the overarching theme for the Dear Evan Hansen trailer, but seeing Ben Platt singing for maybe five seconds in the trailer doesn't translate to a film that will be chock full of songs when it's released ~ same goes for the tick, tick...BOOM! trailer as well, and that’s a Jonathan Larson piece, so you know there's gonna be a lot of music!)
Totally agree about Into the Woods, no Hamilton movie, and Chicago being utter perfection
100% agree with the into the woods film!!!!
Yesssssss. I was scared as to what was going to come next when you mentioned Hairspray and Chicago XD
I genuinely enjoy those. I rewatched Hairspray a ton after it came out. The remake anyway, I could not get into
the original @.@
I'm here for these opinions. I feel validated lol
I want to add something.
No lies detected! Also more Zendaya in musicals please 😍
Any Michael Ball’s in your fridge today?
1000% agree about HSM3! I saw it at the cinema and have zero regrets. Absolutely love it!!
Im glad I’m no the only one who preferred HSM 3 over 2
I personally still think HSM 2 is the best, but one of my friends thinks the third is the best, so you're not alone!
I LOVE THE 3RD HSM!!!
The Prom song is soooooo good
Mamma Mia, Into The Woods, The Prom- the person they all have in common is the answer to the Doris Day question.
yES QUEEN High School Musical 3 >>>>>> Hsm 1 >> Hsm 2
and yes scream is the best thing about hsm
love to see a new Amy upload!!! If you're thinking of new video ideas I'm sure we'd all love a life update!
Me when I first watched the Into the Woods proshot: “I didn’t like that- except for Agony”
Theatre kids watching the Into the Woods movie: “I didn’t like that- except for Agony”
I’m halfway through and so far I’m on board with aaaaaall of this.
fully agree with everything you said EXCEPT HSM3 being better. everyone's on holiday, in the sun, living their best lives in the second one. that's what makes it great for me!
James Corden has only been in two movie musicals as far as I know, but look at how many Meryl Streep has done! I’d say she’s the Doris Day lol
I COMPLETELY agree that High School Musical 3 is the best one! But I also love Grease 2, so take that as you may :).
I loveeeeee your shirt!!
I 100% agree with you about Into The Woods!
where is your shirt from? I love it so much! (you always have such cute shirts on in your vids)
