    I've noticed gardening with bare hands is like a neon sign for them. Squirrels smell our human animal smell in the dirt and will think something is buried there to eat. They dig up the area looking for what "food" we buried. Still cover the pots, though. 'New earth' or "upturned Earth" smell is also a signal for them to dig and explore for possible hidden food...

    Excellent idea Sana but unfortunately the beauty of your plants are now obscured by visible cages and other deterrents. Try hardware cloth instead and bury it just below the top surface of the soil. Secure a washer from outside the pot's bottom drain hole, run a wire (or several) up and secure to the hardware cloth to prevent squirrels from pulling up the whole mesh. Of course you add the soil before anchoring the wire to the mesh top. The plant will grow through the holes of the mesh, this works for me.

      That's amazing. I have been so troubled by the squirrels and rodents that I want to invent a bulletproof product to plant the bulbs 😅.

      Do the flowers grow through the fabric

    • @Fred.pSonic
      @Fred.pSonic Год назад +1

      @@156aliciasy Yes Alicia. Think of it like a miniature square foot gardening grid. You fill your pot, lay hc cloth across the top (cutting to size), push your seed in the individual squares then cover with more soil to cover the fabric from view. For bulbs I just cut out larger squares from the fabric. Once the raccoons dig and hit that steel mesh they give up quick.

    You need lots of forks to keep the squirrels away but it works!

    • @SanaAsGARDEN
      @SanaAsGARDEN  3 года назад

      Oh I bet you need more!
      It kinda helped but I realised they were still reaching the bulbs after pulling away the forks 😣

    Hi Sana. Here in Dublin i have to use wire on tulips becouse of the foxes. They dig them up becouse of the smell (i think) and play with them, they do not eat and its only until they are 10/ 15 cm tall. Then they do not touch.

    • @SanaAsGARDEN
      @SanaAsGARDEN  3 года назад

      Be careful if u have rodents around, I had a bucket of tulips that I dug up and stored ( a couple yrs ago) in my shed , they ate all of them not evn skin was to be seen anywhere.

    • @SanaAsGARDEN
      @SanaAsGARDEN  3 года назад

      That is interesting to know! We do have foxes around.
      Its good they don’t eat but again, any animal activity shall disturb the roots and all .
      Currently I have squirrels eating my bulbs even through wire 🤦🏻‍♀️

      Evil little creatures. My MIL brought me a huge bag of bulbs from Virgina to NY. I planted some in pots and some along my fence. They ate every single one. I am heartbroken because my husband is terminally ill and for his mother to bring these to me was special. I tried red pepper flakes and cayenne pepper but that gets expensive to put down every time you water. I bought a greenhouse for my vegetables because they ate everything last year. So my raised garden is in a tent like greenhouse where there are windows on the side you can open and close and a zip up door on each end where you can leave it up or just leave the screen down. I open it during the day so bees can get in and I have my security camera right on the opening. I put down a piece of plastic fencing and put bird netting on top by the entrances thinking they would get caught up in it. But they have gotten in twice. But the area by the fence and my small flower garden out front...ugh. I had no problem planting in October and covering with leaves. They came up in Spring beautiful. But I want spring and summer bulbs so I have color in both seasons. I am ordering more bulbs today and I am hoping to find a solution. I have hardware cloth, but not enough and the holes are small because I use it to sift my worm castings. I have mulch down. I swear they literally hide and watch me plant the bulbs.

    Hello, can the flowers grow through the chicken wire?

    • @SanaAsGARDEN
      @SanaAsGARDEN  Год назад

      Yes, The plant shoots do grow out of the chicken wire. But again this will depend on the size of your chicken wire. I prefer to keep the wire mesh until I see some growth of the stalk to ensure the bulbs are rooted in well.
