There's literally nothing better than a hot, crunchy, buttermilk biscuit right out of the oven. There's so many different ways to make biscuits, and they are all great! This method is my mom's and is what I grew up watching her make.
This recipe is so easy and is easily adjusted to the number or size biscuits you need at the moment. Just remember, self-rising flour to buttermilk is a 2:1 ratio, and for every cup of self-rising flour, add a heaping tablespoon of shortening. And that's the whole kitten caboodle!
Have fun in the kitchen and practice these traditional dishes that everyone loves!
    Ma-Maw's Sunday Biscuits
    4 cups self-rising flour
    2 cups buttermilk
    4 heaping tablespoons shortening
(additional 2 heaping tablespoons shortening to melt in the pan)
Preheat oven to 425 degrees, add 2 heaping tablespoons of shortening to your biscuit pan. Place pan in the oven until the shortening has melted.
    Biscuits:
Add shortening to your flour, cut the shortening into small pieces. Add buttermilk and stir until completely mixed and sticking together in a ball. Put dough on to a floured surface and kneed for a minute or two, until dough feels sturdy enough to work with. Pat dough out in a circle until about one inch thick. Cut biscuit shapes out, place in hot pan, one at a time flip over so both sides are coated with the shortening. Place biscuits beside each other. (I like to raise one end of my pan on an extra pot holder while doing this to make the shortening pool at one end.)
Bake at 425 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown.
I like to put the pan on the low rack in the oven for the first half of baking, them move the pan to the top rack for the last half.
Once removed, immediately brush tops with melted butter if desired.

I don’t have any living grandparents, they all passed when I was young. I’m not from the U.S. either-but the love and care for family and food you two share with us is very heartwarming for someone like me. ❤
