Well (FOLLOWING THE CURRENT LORE), that thing is NOT Sonic: He's called Normal, he has also almost killed the real Sonic (blinded him in an eye and broke one of his legs). Eggman, when seeing that, has stopped all of his plans for conquering little planet and has helped to heal Sonic, they both are now somewhere (I remember specifically in a cave) trying to make a plan to stop Normal. Welp, yeah, Metal, after the near death of Sonic, has been freed from Eggman's past intentions and now wants to stop Normal too, with the help of Amy, that in this universe is more "tech-saavy" and has re-built him untill this final form that uses the power of the yellow time stone (with it, Metal can go back to Metallic Madness after losing in a battle with Normal) One day Normal founds the secret base of Amy and Metal and, this song partially explains what happened. In the Lore they fought and Normal pretty much decapitated Metal, used his head to get back to the base and destroyed almost all things containing Metal's code. Luckily Amy found a drive with the code and started Re-building again Metal, but this time using prototype blueprints of Mecha Sonic, the rest has not been revealed.
