Manga also has an opening end. There two parts of them! Not one! He wants to buy a ring for Imagase.
"Nobody knows our future. " That's the idea of the end.

This is SO good, my stomach turned to knots with the first scene you used (as an opener!!!!) And it just twisted more and more as this vid went on. The moments you chose do such a perfect job of capturing the way these two love one another so hard but out of sync. Wataru understood Kyoichi better than he understood himself in every way except that he didn't know Kyoichi really did love him, which this video highlights so well. Gorgeous! 💕

Thank you so much for this lovely comment, I really appreciate it!!! 🥺🥺🥺💜💜💜 I really liked how you described it, that they love each other so hard but out of sync. And if I managed to capture some of that in the video, I'm very happy, so thank you!! 💕💕💕

It's not a bad one though.People who prefer sad endings can interpret it that way,but otherwise the movie leave us with the hope that they'll be back together.I mean, they didn't separate for lack of love. And there's no other obstacle than themselves in their way. They can totally work that out

I'm sorry for how long this is, and I'm doing this from memory so I'm probably missing a lot of things, but anyway 😅 And I realized now right after I wrote it that you might have meant the ending of the edit and not the movie. I wrote this assuming you had seen the movie and were asking about the movie ending. If that's not the case I'm sorry. If so let me know and I'll re-write it🙈
First, the ending of the movie is different from the ending of the manga that the movie is based on, so if you dislike the open ending of the movie I recommend reading the manga. It has a clearer, more happy ending. It's still somewhat bittersweet and open, but it ends on a much more hopeful note
But to explain the ending of the movie, Kyoichi agrees to break up with his fiancée, Tamaki. He wants to really give the relationship with Imagase a chance, but Imagase gets cold feet, and doesn't trust him, so he leaves and throws away the ashtray. This leads to their dynamic changing. Now Kyoichi is the one waiting for Imagase instead, symbolized by sitting on the chair where Imagase used to sit, waiting for his return.
And there's a lot of symbolism in the last scene to show Kyiochi's willingnes to wait and to work for the relationship, and to give them another chance. The washing of the ashtray, instead of saving the cigarette butts as before, reads like starting on a new leaf instead of continuing to making the same mistakes to me. All the while believing that Imagase will be back to use it again, so there is no need to save the old ones. He also changed the curtains back from the ones Tamaki chose, preparing his home, and himself, for Imagases return.
And the ending really shows how much Kyoichi has evolved as a person. He chose to make a decision, and an uncomfortable decision at that, breaking up with Tamaki, despite ending up alone, despiteTamaki offering him an "agreement". Someone who used to always rely on others to decide the way for him and just follow along, someone who would never be alone, always let someone with a stronger will lead, decided that Imagase was worth fighting for. Even if Imagase would not come back, he would rather be alone and work on himself, which is a very big change from the character at the beginning, weakwilled and unable to stay fateful because he couldn't say no.
But whether they end up together or not, the movie leaves open to interpretation. Choosing to show the conversation from when they broke up the first time, about being the only exception, at the point in the movie where they did, combined with how Imagase, when hooking up with someone else, is breaking down and crying, shows that Imagase is still not over Kyoichi, I feel. And so far he has always circled back to Kyoichi sooner or later like a moth to the flame. And I doubt that would change. But for certain whether he will this time as well, or if Kyoichi will find him, is not made clear. And whether Imagase has changed enough for the relationship to work, or Kyoichi for that matter, tho he's taken more clear steps, that's up to the watcher to imagine since there are no clear answers. The manga gives answers to some questions, but still, some are left open.
Personally, I think the movie ending is a hopeful one, where they are both finally in a place where they can start taking the steps necessary to make the relationship work. Before, neither of them was in a place where they could be what the other person needed in a healthy manner, but now, for the first time, they are on the road to being able to reach each other. It won't be an easy road, and I'm not sure if they'll ever be truly healthy together, but if they are both willing, and willing to work on it, I do think they will end up together, and that it is what the ending points towards, but that's just my interpretation
I'm not sure if that answers your question. If there are specific things about the ending you're wondering about, ask and I'll try to answer
