Hiroyuki Sanada is an incredible actor, a really magnetic on screen presence and as you can see in this interview a man of refinement and intelligence. I think his performance is 47 Ronin is an overlooked gem and highlight of the movie. Oishi is a very different character than Ujio in the Last Samurai, so do not expect him to act the role the same way, both are very good performances, one man was fire and the other was steel.
Such a gentleman he is. And what a pleasure to listen his really great English. More and more handsome with the time. More attractive and sexy with every next year. Without Hiro- San 47 RONIN will not be such touchable and powerful story. In many points he makes the movie. Absolutely great, awesome Oishi. I love Hiroyuki very much. I always loved him. Years ago I saw him at the stage. Shakespeare. This was...this was the moment I have felt in love with him. I hope there will be many others outstanding roles played by this amazing man and actor. Many others impressive and powerful as LAST SAMURAI, THE REAL WAY MAN and of course 47 RONIN.
Never understood why he hasn't had any major lead roles, he always plays some respective support or antagonist, but never lead. Maybe it's because he's one of the few actors who no one really dislikes. From a human perspective this is a good thing, but perhaps it means he doesn't generate enough buzz in the movie industry.

Anyone remember him in the movie 1986 Hong Kong film "Royal Warriors" co-starring Michelle Yeoh. I remember watching him in that movie since I was a kid.
Without him, this movie would turn into disaster! The movie is not that bad, but too much cheesy lines & awkward acting. Thank heavens, Oishi character saved this movie. No one play better "cool" samurai than him :)

I am saying this due to the braveness of him doing the interview without any interpreter/translator. Also, I think we should give credit to him especially when he thinks before speak. At least, he is trying to choose the perfect or suitable words for each thing he gonna say. Actually I am also a non English speaker, and I never had this kind of courage like him to speak my-not-mother tounge-language

Anything Keanu Reeves does in my book is excellent he doesn't do poor movies as his career has progressed will always love him in the matrix. Don't know that much about this Asian actor but I get the feeling that his body of work is impressive in his native land. He does bring it to this movie and adds to it's success. Hope to see him in more American films we need to add more diversity in films with actors that come from different places.

And here is my point: 47 Ronin was a great movie for the young generation and the audience accustomed to Hollywood flicks. It introduces Japanese history and culture to them. Whoever's interested in learning more about Japan in general or the movie's historic accuracy in particular will dig more.

Greatly underrated movie, one of my go-to movies that always works. Hiroyuki always makes an impact on screen that is not easily forgotten.

47 Ronin should have been better, the awkward "love" story with the halfbreed and the Lady dragged this film down. Everything else was great!
