- It was day 2 of mine and @baldandbankrupt Indian adventure and it was time to escape from Delhi! After a crazy first day in the capital of India we began the long 14 hour train journey to Varanasi. The price of the train ticket was around £10 and it got us a basic bed but to be honest it wasn't so bad! However when the time came to sleep it became one of the worst journeys ever!

The reason why our countrymen won't change is visible in the comment section - people cant stand hearing and seeing negative things about our country. My wife had just given birth and was in maternity ward next to Indian family, they were playing music in the middle of the night, on phone on loudspeaker middle of the night and eating strong smelling curry’s, husband was sneaking in with them at 1am, don’t know why Indians find this behaviour acceptable and the train journey reminded me of this experience.

So why it is not Indian railways problem. By the way most of the trains are late by almost an hour on reaching its destination in south eastern railway. So why it is not Indian railways problem. Stop making such dumb excuses. We are paying money for the services. Nothing is granted in free. Even the passengers of local train are also paying money for the services. So don't make such dumb argument. Every body deserves proper services.
With the realistic levels of funding possible, railways is doing good. But then you will crticize because you have to.
Even if we make you sit as Railway minister you still can't do anything better because it's not realistically possible unless the economy grows suddenly so much to support larger funding.

We don't have resources to work on electrification and also maintain expansionary finding on new tracks at the same time, now that first priority of electrification is getting over,
I wish railway takes on adding new tracks as top most priority along with improving in house services.
For the last decade, only the physical infrastructure was the focus..

I'm in Japan right now with my wife and not only are the trains the exact opposite of that one but every one of our accommodations in Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, and Tokyo has been cheaper for a two person room than everywhere you checked.
I suggest you opt for comfort on your next trip and go to Japan :) It has a reputation for being expensive while India has a reputation for being cheap, but looking at this, the opposite is true.

I'm not denying it. But these 5-7 cities from these states does not represent the whole of India. I'm not even gonna mention Goa or South India or North Eastern states. Places like Indore, Bhopal in MP, Ahmedabad, Surat in Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Pune in Maharashtra, Chandigarh etc. are way much cleaner. Also what few illiterate North Indians think of me and North East does not bother me. I have many North Indian friends and good memories with them outweighs the bad ones which we may sometimes face.

Our Indian cleanliness should focused on management of waste, public sanitation, regular sweeping and cleaning etc. which all the cities I mentioned have. There's no shortcut solution to over population. So you're deluded to even think about Indian cities cleanliness with that of Europe. And Yes i have travelled abroad, not in the West but I've been to SEA Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and it's safe to say their cleanliness level will be equal to some of those clean cities I mentioned in India. And yes Ahmedabad and Bhopal are nice and clean as far as my experience.

North Jammu Kashmir , Ladakh. ...south is cleaner as rest of world , North-eastern states are most beautiful and they also have cleanest villages in Sikkim..

I'd recommend anyone to do a 2AC train tour around India - the journeys are long and unreliable but it's cheap and reasonably comfortable, and the passengers are friendly.

Trains are a mess in this country except for Vande Bharat, Rajdhani and a few other trains. Next time try travelling in one of those. The journey will not take that much time, and it will be much cleaner. I myself am very selective in which trains I travel on unless there are limited options.
You may be the billionaire of ur area. That doesn't mean everyone in ur country has time money efficiency to cherry pick trains.
Just Travel like an average indian.
No sorry they are not mess the more North you go in UP and Bihar they are worst. In southern states and places like Maharashtra Gujarat, the western ones are fine until the Bihar, UP crowd gets in and it becomes dirty with garbage in no time.
So you're basically admitting that to truly have a good experience in India as a tourist, one needs to be rich. This is quite pathetic and you're just making your tourism industry more expensive. Who'd want to go to such tourist destination that's really expensive for mediocre experience? Contrast this to South East Asia, where it's cheap yet the services there are miles ahead than what you'd get in India.
