I bought a couple of the old Tamagotchis for the same reasons you described. That crippling realisation that life kinda sucks and it’s only going to get worse. Those old bleeps are so recognisable I forgot to silence it at work and when it went off demanding tribute someone went “omg is that a tamagotchi?!” 😂

I love tamagotchi so much! I've been collecting them since 2018 and now I own over 60+ ranging from the very first one from the 90's to the newest Tamagotchi Uni.
I'm envious!! I have 25 so far haha

The name actually comes from the words "tamago" and "tomodachi" which mean egg and friend so they're basically egg friend
I remember going toys r us with my mum and getting the last one one the shelve it was a clear blue one. Still have it to this day
I never had a Tamagotchi, but I did get a Digimon as a kid. Later I got a Gigapet dog. Digimon was by far my favorite. Raising a dinosaur was the coolest.
Tamagotchi is also based on assonance with the word "tomodachi" (friend)
That plus the word tamago for egg

Awesome run through the history; I immediately thought of Digimon and you reminded me about the original, the TV show which I adored (and movies), then the Digimon devices. That Pokemon Pikachu with the step counter was incredible to me at the time, and I spent many hours shaking that thing to earn xp! 😂
I remember seeing a huge steel bin full of tamagotchis for $1 each at the end of the hype. Already had one but still bought a few. Just found a nib white/grey one when i moved. Pulled the battery tab out and it started right up :]
I remember back then kids would have like 5-10 of different brands hanging on their belts😂
I love Tamagotchi since 2000s until now I have Tamagotchi Uni which is the first Wifi feature!

I just bought the UNI so I can finally make my nostalgia at ease! And hopefully not make it die...
My brother bought me a Gen 1 Tamagotchi for Christmas as a joke present (slightly more basic to the "Connect Tamgitchis" me and my friends played with back in the 2000s). Now whenever I have a second (e.g., waiting for the kettle to boil) I'm feeding or playing with my "pet alien" to keep it from being hungry or unhappy. And having had this toy for two days now, I can testify that the final point you make, "The Parallel To Mobile Phones", is spot on! I was checking my social media on my phone every time I had a few minutes but after deleting social media earlier this year and having now received a Tamagotchi, I'm instead filling up those moments of free time with keeping my Tamagotchi alive!

I grew up in the early 2000s and never experienced Tamagotchi. Until now, since I just ordered a Tamagotchi Uni. I feel like I’m going to regret my decision lol
I remember having one of these and I didn't have the attention span to constantly fiddle with it and then it dying just made me sad so I never picked one up ever again lol I do like them though but I am not the target audience for them lol I was definitely more into the Digimon and digi vices but the real toy I loved was the cube world stickman lol
I remember mine died and I thought that it was trash after that lol!
grew up with some Tamagochi, Furby, digimon, heck, I even had one of the rough riders nano. this brings back some great memories.
I love you comparison of the attention we used to put into tamagotchi, that now we put to our representation in social media. I think this is spot on and very fitting analogy. We care for and feed the monster with virtue signalling, attention, fear, obsession and dopamine hunting.

I never had a Tamagotchi, I was probably born a little too late for that, but I had a VTech Kidipet Touch Dog which I still have somewhere around here

Yes I had a purple a pink 1997 Tamagotchi, Giga Pet a Nano pet. I could never successfully keep the Tamagotchi alive like I could the other two. I actually still have all 3. I decided to restart my original Tamagotchi again to see how it goes but I have ordered one of the Tamagotchi Uni’s.

There were colour Tamagotchis in Japan since 2008 (Tamagotchi Plus Color and newer ones after that like called ”iD, iDL, Ps, 4U,
4U+, M!x, On, Smart”), but only the last couple of years there have been modern ones in others parts of the world too.
(There are English translations of some of the Japanese versions.
After a while you learn the menus even without knowing Japanese.)

In my research on Tamagotchi I found an article attributing the idea to Maita Aki, and in the interview she talked about the ad about the boy with his pet turtle, not sure what to think of this, where did you find that it was Yokoi's idea?
Quite a few sources state Yokoi was the one who had the initial idea based on the turtle advert. The most credible articles are from the New York Times and Smithsonian Magazine.
Aki Maita was seemingly responsible for solidifying the design of Tamagotchi after Yokoi's initial concept was pitched and she became the sort of face of the brand during its early years.
But really the Tamagotchi as we know it was a joint effort between both Yokoi and Maita!

The tech got better and the shells got worse is my basic summary. The new UNI best tama they ever done imo but boi it’s an ugly shell compared to the old variety of choices. I’m willing to bet if you sat a group of kids down showed them the 90s shells and then these modern ones most would go with the interesting 90s ones looking better.
