Nice! Saved me a $135 diagnostic fee from a mechanic when my "Check Engine" light came on and all I needed was a new $11 gas cap to pass the smog inspection. I had a feeling it was just the gas cap when I ran an analytics check, but the mechanic said he would need to charge me a full analytics fee to reset the check engine light. Thank you!
Next time your light goes on, go to just about any parts store; O'Reilly, NAPA, AutoZone, etc. They do free analysis of your check engine codes. And they sell the parts, too! ;)
Did you pass after resetting it? Saw another comment on here saying that if you immediately go back to get the inspection, it won’t pass because the computer will be clear. The commenter said to drive 50-100 miles for the cycle to reset. I’m just wondering what you did and if it worked for you?
@@selenaforbes286 You need to fix the problem that set off the "check engine" light to pass. The Smog guy told me I'd needed to drive 50 miles before he was even allowed to retest, but the analytics pointed me in the direction of knowing what was probably wrong. Luckily it wasn't anything more than that, but just to hook your car up and tell you what codes you're getting, it's going to be $100 if a mechanic does it. That's before they do anything to actually fix the problem. I also found out later you can go to a parts store like Kragen and they will run an analytics test for free.
I thank God that I found this video. Here’s my little story. I have a 2016 Chrysler 200. My engine light has been on for a longtime. I thought at first it was oil. I did the oil change, but the engine light stayed on. This year I had to take it for inspection at the MVA. It failed, the results showed e11u9, that’s active grill shutter. I bought the active grill shutter replacement. I took the car to a mechanic. The guy checked the car before he can work on it. He said, there must be another problem cause my active grill shutter looks fine. I went to Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep around here. They charged me $1100 to check the car and fix it. In all these places at least I didn’t pay yet. I was weighing my options. My last due date of inspection was 2 days, m I’ve already extended twice, so they didn’t grant another extension. I found this video a night before the inspection. I woke up in the morning do this trick and to my surprise it worked for the first time, my engine light was off. I didn’t switch my car off, I took it to the MVA, they scanned it and they didn’t find nothing and it passed. So I don’t agree with people on here who said it only works with oil problem. My problem wasn’t oil, it was active grill shutter and it worked.
Thank you so much for this video . I knew I needed oil in my car and I did my oil change and needed to reset my check engine light! 1st try worked perfectly 2:02
Normally don’t take time to give comments on videos. However, I find myself being completely honest and wish I had known this method of reset several years ago. I have been a gearhead since probably the age of 12 years old now the last time I counted I am 67. On a Mazda RX eight, 2004, I encountered a check engine light that would not permit me to re-license the car due to emissions. I live in Northwest Indiana on the southern tip of Lake Michigan. I maintain all my car engines as I do my own aircraft engine. In which anyone familiar with being a pilot, the FAA does not have anything of the sort as a ridiculous thing known as a check engine light on an aircraft engine. But this most ridiculous bullshit, pardon my expression on a car engine is enough to keep you from plating the car from here to your so returning it back over to the dealership I encountered spending almost $3000 on which they could not figure out how to reset my check engine light.. So in terms here, I have a $20,000 card that is now worthless. So Mazda gave up and I then noticed myself that the negative battery terminal was not completely tight. I have used this method from time to time when the check engine light acts stupid. It’s a shame, but this is nothing but a money game. And should be outlawed. Keep up the good work. Thank you, Douglas Nelson.
Excellent advice and description! I was worried that the car was going to break down. Your video was so helpful as made the reset and solved the problem. Thanks very much from Singapore!🙏🙏
Sounds good but you didn't say anything about after doing this, you can't immediately go and get an inspection because the computer will be clear and they won't pass it. It needs to be driven 50 to 100 miles or a full drive cycle to get all 8 codes back set on "ready". So many videos tell you the trick but fail to tell the rest. I wish I would've known this prior to resetting it and then trying to go get an inspection right after I did it. Being on a time crunch I thought this quick fix would work right before the inspection but now I know.

I just had the repairs done to fix the check engine light, but apparently didn’t go through the entire drive cycle (even though I drove it 100 miles), so the emissions test came back as “Vehicle not ready”. Basically, it’s hard to pass the emissions test even if you’ve actually gotten the repairs done, let alone if you’re trying to trick it. Big load of bologna.
My solara was very picky about the type of driving needed to recollect the data required for a smog test after doing this. I had to go through the whole drive cycle outlined for my vehicle to get it to work.
I did that to my Volvo and it does work and then I drove it for about 25 miles and it reset because if the check engine light comes off the computer learns the driving habit of the car again
I found the easiest way was to remove the cable from the negative terminal, then hold down the horm for approximately 1 minute and then reconnect the negative after 20 minutes.
My problem is the check engine light turned off after I replaced the Themostat. But I'm getting the same error code P0599 smog fail. The smog tester said I may have to drive the car 200 miles before the computer resets. But why did the check engine light turn off? Your video only addresses getting the light to turn off. That's not my problem.
Is there a way to see if someone cleared a code? Like if you’re going to buy a used car, it happened to me, they did the cheat to clear the check engine light, but it popped up when I owned the car exactly 26 hours lol it was a very cheap easy fix but still.

You saved my 100$ Thank you so much
Thanks a lot brother, it works
You can also just disconnect both battery terminals and then hold them together for about a minute. This will drain all energy.
Worked like a charm 👌 thank you
WHY would u want to drain all energy??
How long will that last how long will the light stay off approximately if it's a hard coded issue?
Me-80 miles
How long does this adjustment work for, hour minutes or days?
My l
My solara was very picky about the type of driving needed to recollect the data required for a smog test after doing this. I had to go through the whole drive cycle outlined for my vehicle to get it to work.
Amazing , it works as you said, thanks !
Very true i tried it and it worked correctly for me
Me too
PERFECT!!! Thanks. It worked
And how long before it comes back? A few miles?
It worked for me as well. Thanks for the hack
Does this work with all cars?
I just did this and check engine light is now off. Cheers.
I did that to my Volvo and it does work and then I drove it for about 25 miles and it reset because if the check engine light comes off the computer learns the driving habit of the car again
Learns the driving habit of the car? Wrong. It comes on again because you are not addressing the issue that caused it to turn on in the first place.
@@markdallmann9619he said off not on
You're the BEST 👏👏👏
Sounded good !
Bro thank you it worked on a 1995 Toyota Celica ST
Would this work for a 2016 Chevy Impala?
Yall just out there in the driveway blowing your horns 🤣
Worked on 2008 Honda Odyssey! Thank you!
did you pass inspection in california?
I found the easiest way was to remove the cable from the negative terminal, then hold down the horm for approximately 1 minute and then reconnect the negative after 20 minutes.
thats what he said. your welcome.
They call you repeat?
Thank you so much for the help
Cool video but why not just hit the horn and lights while u got the cable off the first time🤔
Did this and brought on more lights that was on before! Great.
Is 😅this good or Bad???
@@lynnedunn1541 Terrible! 🤣
It worked ! Thanks
Drove through big puddle lights came on and speedo stopped working sometimes! Turning ignition on off sometimes fixes it , ekkkj!
Thank you. It worked!
Have a 2017 Hyundai sonata , If I disconnect the negative battery terminal to turn off the check engine light would that bother my radio in any way?
You may lose the station pre-sets! To keep selected stations in memory you need to keep power going to the radio!
It will self destruct in 10 seconds
Does not seem to work on a mercedes benz 2006 slk350. Tried for 5 minutes with disconnected neg cable..
Is there a way to see if someone cleared a code? Like if you’re going to buy a used car, it happened to me, they did the cheat to clear the check engine light, but it popped up when I owned the car exactly 26 hours lol it was a very cheap easy fix but still.
