I went to that race, and also the first GP in 73 and the Trans AMA at Carlsbad in 72. Me and my friends crawled through the tomato fields to sneak in. They used to have the Weigh in at the Carlsbad mall. We rode out bicycles there to see the Europeans that came from another planet. Decoster was there answering questions with his year old works bikes. I miss those days.. Thanks for posting the Video. Brings back great memories
Fantastic video, thanks, it takes me back, I started racing MX in Melbourne Australia in '74 on a TM125, I race a GSXR1000 Superbike now but I'd so love to go back to my MX days in the '70's.
Thank you so much for sharing. I had a lot of great memories from the track. My dad would load up the 72 VW Bus and we would head to Carlsbad. I always wondered as a kid, "why there were no other black families out there". By the time we started going to race all of us (my 3 brothers and myself (the only girl) were riding dirt bikes. My first bike was a Husqvarna. #GREAT MEMORIES
Great job for a 12 year old..I was 14 at that time and could not wait for Wide World of Sports to show the race , at that time I was lucky to get 4 channels on the tv. I rooted for Mikkola and Lackey on the Huskeys...Thanks for sharing...
Awesome! My 1st Race Bike was a 77 RM125B Suzuki. many many bikes followed. My 1st Carlsbad 500GP race that I attended was the 1979 Race & went to EVERY one after that up until they shut it down. Wish I would have smart enough to take a movie Cam like You did! I'll never forget the Race when Magoo Demoralized the Euro's & showed 'em how to ride. But this video here is a gem, this was when the Americans were still in there learning curve. Nice job. & the music's great too.
OK, thats it. I just finished restoring a 73 XR75 and I'm headed to the front lawn. My wife is going to be hot (just like in 74 ha ha). Thanks for saving this great piece of history!
Thanks for the memories! My racing buddies and I drove an old van from Missouri with an 8-track of ZZ Top blaring the whole trip to be there for the race the next day on Sunday. My dream then was to see the great Roger DeCoster in person. He was simply a GOD!!
Oh man, this is unbelievable. I've been watching some videos of vintage races and I haven't seen anything CLOSE to this. I mean, those guys are really going flat-out, how do they keep from going sideways at 50mph? I was born way too late to see all these legends and I thank you profoundly for giving me a glimpse of Adolf Weil, DeCoster and the rest doing their thing. Too bad about Ake Jonsson and Yamaha, the poor guy never really won anything again!
hey, we're the same age and both grew up loving MOTOX. I got hooked when a neighbor let me ride his 1974 CR 125 elsinore. i was hooked after that. bought a 1976 RM 125 and started racing. Decoster and Marty Smith were my heros. Now I play guitar, playing hendrix and SRV. thanks for the VIDEOs
Great memories! All my heroes...except Joel Robert...I guess he was retired by 1974. This was right about the time Super Cross was taking off, with Marty Smith, Marty Tripes, Gary Jones, Brad Lackey becoming big names. Great footage! Thanks for posting!
O my gosh. I grew up in the 80s. I fuckin love this commentary. These were the guys that I read about in motocross action magazine as a kid Read it front to back.
Unreal...I'm stunned. I was 11 years old when you shot this, and although I had just learned to ride at that time I had yet to discover the sport. A year later I was totaly consumed with it. Thanks for getting out there at such a young age and then sharing it with us all these years later. It would be cool if you wanted to share some more memories.
Great Vid. For all of you old-skool guys out there; First Bike craved - 1972 Hodaka Super Rat First Bike owned - 1973 Suzuki TC100 (100cc, dual trans settings - off/on road) First Bike raced - 1975 RM125 (first year for the RMs) Best Bike owned/raced - 1977 Suzuki RM 370 (ported to 400cc w/Fox Shocks) Gnarliest Bike owned/raced - 1980 Maico MC 490 (for those who know, need I say more?) Smoothest Bike owned/raced - 1979 Suzuki RM 400 Last Bike raced - 1984 Honda CR 500
This is before my time, but I just got a couple of memorabilia from this actual race from Gerrit Wolsink's sister (Dutch racer from that time). He brought T-shirts and stuff signed by Brad Lackey back to Holland. Pretty cool to see that these shirts are from this race...
Wow! Memories are streaming back! Never saw the GP live but made it to a couple Trans-Am events at Saddleback at that time. I did get the opportunity to ride Carlsbad Monday the day after the '75 GP. It was beat to a pulp! Thanks for that!
Brings back a lot of memories to some great Dutch riders. Specialy "Flying Dentist" Gerrit Wolsink. I had is poster hanging on the wall when I was a kid. If you have some more.......give us more.
I live just down the street from the old track, there's very little left of it, it's now a nature walk. The trestles from the last pedestrian bridge are still there, hidden in the undergrowth of the creek.
The golden era of motocross and the golden days our youth ( just like the infamous quote in the movie "The Outsiders"...Stay Golden), and in my case I can add the best of times with my dad. I would have been 13 then.
I bought the program for this GP and had the cover of it silk screened on to a t-shirt, I used to wear it everywhere. I still have it but its a bit faded, Believe it or not I tried it on and......I couldn't get it past my shoulders. It must have shrunk....
It's interesting how you learn things like that, only after so many years of thinking it was the other way about. Did you also know that Maico is technically pronounced like "Mie-Co" rather than "May-Co?" And on an off-topic bit of German pronunciation, Dr. Seuss is pronounced "Soyss," and yes, you DO have to pronounce the E in Porsche. Language is weird.
Bengt Áberg was my neighbor and dad to one of my best friends when I grew up. Was nice to see this. and it's not pronounced Aberg. its pronounced Á sounds like A in the word All,
Awesome video.....I went one year in the early 70s, probably around 72. It was great but I do remember the traffic jam getting out was horrible......do u remember anything about that? Great Video....thanks. I always thought JN Roberts could dominate the Europeans but he rode desert not moto x.....Thanks.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! and ride down memory lane. These guys were the hero's of my youth. Only one I ever met was DeCoster when he was Honda team manager at an Atlanta SX in the 1990's. Worst shock of my life was when my dad sold my 1975 Heikki Mikkola replica Husky 360 CR, Kawasaki 1973 H2 750 triple, and bike trailer while I was storing them at his house for a while... apparently they wee an "attractive nuisance", and my step brother got hurt while riding my husky. If he was anyone other than my father, I would have killed him! Ejuropean style motocross rocks!, supercross sucks! Keep on ridin, & thanks.
the background music was allright but it would have been better to hear the big two strokes burnin` gas and oil mix..I too was there as a young one for a great day of watching the pros.I remember the downhill as being this huge never ending descent and man did they fly down that hill.I thought they were all supermen.thanks for the time takeback.I loved my kawasaki 100 trailmaster that allowed me to enjoy dirt biking as a teen. And by the way, there are some really sick rich people that are planning some ugly shit.I`m just in saying. Not insane.
Great Motocross Memory Upload there! I saw all my Moto Icon Idols here! I was there a few months earlier with my new '74 Cr250 Elsinore and Moto-Tangling in the 250 Beginners Class. DeCoster, Mikkola, Karsmakers. These were the kings of Motocross. Thanks for the trip.

This is exciting Nostalgia Motocross. You might not be Larry Huffman, but you are a good narrator.
Awesome footage, was there in the 70's and raced with my brother. Great times, where did they go? So fast, time just zooms by...
Brings back a lot of memories to some great Dutch riders. Specialy "Flying Dentist" Gerrit Wolsink. I had is poster hanging on the wall when I was a kid. If you have some more.......give us more.

Its sad and sobering that a lot of our heroes in this film have passed on....including our parents
Cool Stuff!! I was there that weekend!! Thanks for the video.
Wildman, I'm with you. This is some great stuff. Man, N. San Diego County rules for a while....while we had Carlsbad anyway...
Thanks Lex Valasakos for Filming and editing it!
The Carlsbad Track is now an industrial park 😢..........
