Timothy Treadwell thought Bears were completely safe to be around - he was ok for years then one night he and his GF were killed and eaten by a Bear......
Which is why most true experts (i.e. real scientists, conservationists and animal behaviourists rather than self-proclaimed ‘experts’ and influencers) keep their distance from the wild animals they are observing and never forget that they are guests in the animal’s environment.
Frankly, all animals should be respected and basically left alone. Rumor has it that in Africa plant eaters cause more fatalities than predators. BTW: In Germany people get killed by domesticated cows each year.

I've been scuba diving since 1995 and I have only had two major encounters with pelagic sharks absolutely effing with me. One was a night dive off of Southern California and the other a daytime wall-dive off of Utila, Honduras. During the wall-dive my buddy and I were about 60ft down on a sandy outcropping along the wall looking at Sea Horses when a large aggressive Hammerhead showed up. I was scanning the blue and saw it cruising up the wall towards us, my buddy was focussed on the Sea Horses. The shark came right in and I immediately hit my Tank Banger, a large bead with a rubber band around my tank used to get other diver's attention. I snapped that bead and the shark immediately did an about-face and swam off 30ft before spinning around and coming right back. I snapped it a second time and it spun around and this time only swam 15ft away, before turning back. That's when I had the sinking feeling that this thing wasn't as afraid as it was a moment ago... We huddled against the wall on the sandy shelf with out knives out and calmly breathed as this thing assessed whether or not it could eat us. My buddy described it as 12-14ft, but I would say just slightly less than that, but definitely the size of my dining room table or more. The night dive was absolutely terrifying. A miscommunication between my buddy and I left us both separated from one another in about 70ft of murky CA water around 10PM. I was along a reef outcropping when I realized that there was no sign of Gary. I turned off my lights and held my breath to see if I could see his lights or hear his regulator, but no sign of both. I started heading to the surface when I paused halfway up, about 35ft from the surface in 70ft of water. I turned my lights off again, held my breath and slowly spun around doing pirouettes scanning the murk looking for Gary. That's when I got drilled by a very large shark. I was being shoved as I lay over the snout of this thing, it was huge, I'm 6'1" and I was folded over the snout as it drove me away from the reef and over the open sandy bay. I distinctly remember my regulator violently fluttering in the current as this thing pushed me along. I was wearing a Steal-95 Tank, and I swung my hip around and smacked the shark in the head with my tank, it made a loud thunk sound. That beefy shark turned away and I saw the side of it for half a second, before I swam to the bottom of the ocean at about 70ft. I had my lights back on and my knife out as I lay on my back sweeping my lights all around expecting this thing to come back, which it never did, but goddamn was I chitting myself. I had to immediately remind myself not to use up my air-supply and to get ahold of myself. That's when I realized that I was no longer in the protection of the reef. I quickly composed myself, glanced at my compass and started heading back to shore. In hindsight I should have made my way back to the reef, but I wanted out of the water, so I headed towards shore. I tried swimming upside down so that I could scan my environment, but I was way too clumsy, so I had to make the decision to roll over and swim more efficiently with very little visibility forward half expecting to get bit any second. When I finally got into about 6' of water near shore I felt incredibly lucky until I realized that there was not sign of Gary. He should have been at the surface by now after being separated for 10 minutes. He should have been up after 1 minute, but still no sign of him. After a few moments he popped up about 100 yards out, and swam over to me with a huge smile on his face and a back full of Lobsters. He wanted to grab our second tanks and go back in, but I only agreed to do the second dive if we drove 10 miles south and that's what we did.
Would you also consider it bad luck if you walked into a lion cage and got your leg torn off? It's blatant foolishness to dip one toe in the monster infested soup ocean!
I really appreciate the fact that you acknowledge that sharks can still be dangerous and that it's best to stay away because even if you do everything right, at the end of the day sharks are large predatory animals with lots of sharp teeth. Amazing video, keep up the good work

Agreed. The shark propaganda messaging has gone too much in the wrong direction. Went from mindless killing machines to humans are completely not on the menu of a shark and shark attacks are just 100% a mistake in identity so let’s go swim with sharks and have a grand old time. The reality is the answer is always somewhere in the middle of the messaging. Shark attacks are rare, but opportunistic predators and if given the opportunity and hunger they will prey on humans and consume them. Humans can get attacked for a whole host of other reasons: test bites, defensive bites , etc. Why I agree ocean Ramsey is a terrible example for people. She reminds me a lot of Timothy Treadwell “Grizzly Man”. Sharks aren’t harmless stuffed animals. They are apex predators and can be very dangerous and unpredictable and as you say best observed from a far.
I've always been really freaked out by that first video. Something about seeing her trying to get away and being in the sharks mouth out there in the open ocean just gets under my skin. I will say that the last video is a real good example of why you don't harass the wild life.
The guys with the nurse sharks absolutely got me, omg. The way he just...throws it. Throws it AT someone. I'm sure it's mostly a reflex/out of anger/pain but omg, it's like the start of a skit. Hopefully they won't do that again. Happy new year!
Heather Boswell wasn't on a navy ship. It was a research vessel - noaa ship discoverer. I've met her as one of my friends was her roommate on the ship and my ex boyfriend was there as well - he got her out of the water. And i worked on the ship prior. She's very brave.
I also found you through the Ocean Ramsay video and appreciate all of the videos I bingewatched since yesterday. Thank you for being objective and openminded. Analysing attacks and just getting their behaviour explained is such a joy and to be honest calming to me. They are not evil or gruesome but great predators that have the potential to be fatal.
I watched the Mick Fanning attack live, and it was incredibly scary. He was very shook up, and his friend and fellow surf competitor Julian, came to his aid despite the great white in the water...amazing footage
Sharks will very, very rarely continue an attack with another animal around. They'll even stop seal attacks if another seal comes nearby. This is especially true of Great Whites as ambush predators, they are at their most vulnerable while attacking and their instinct is to flee at any sense of danger.
I’m amazed that last diver didn’t turn the water brown 😂 the surfer one definitely had me holding my breath, I was certain it would end with a missing foot or something. Spear fisher was super lucky and smart with everything action he took during the attack. I didn’t see any fish on him either so I’d bet it was a territorial attack rather than a predatory thing.

The "Sharks Happen" channel by Hal is definitely the best oral attack presenter. This guy is also good. I believe they work together sometimes. But is this a plagiarism of Hal's format? I hate to see someone successful or working trying to be who gets cut by people that steal his idea. I wanted to watch the diver attack but your face was enlarged into the center of the screen? I think it is ok to watch attack videos where no-one gets seriously hurt or killed. I did not feel comfortable watching that girl get attacked. There are some things that should be kept private. Like Dawn getting killed at Seaworld. Well keep trying. :)
@@TheBWWaterfront we’ve been doing shark scientist reacts to shark attacks ever since Shark Bytes began, so I’m not convinced this is plagiarism. Hal takes you through incidents on the GSAF, I look at incidents where videos have surfaced of this happening. The face in the centre of the screen is to deal with copyright, which would often block me from uploading the video at all. Fortunately it doesn’t happen often, but occasionally it does.
To answer your question about which shark encounter freaked me out the most , I will ALWAYS say the Heather Boswell attack. It's the first shark attack video I ever saw and the screams and the reaction of her colleagues, as well as watching her frantically swim away from that freaking HUGE shark....ugh it will always disturb me! Btw, I thought your opinion piece on Ocean was very fair and honestly you're just stating what the majority of marine biologists and pretty much anyone who understands the risks of close interactions w apex marine predators are thinking ! I very much enjoyed that video and it was news to me that I had been misinformed about the fact that that was not ,in fact, a pregnant Deep Blue , but just a different White Shark who had just finished chowing down on a whale carcass. 🤣And THAT is exactly why Ms. Ramsey is dangerous ! Gotta admit the clip with the nurse shark made me laugh. The divers thought such a little shark wasn't dangerous and he really showed them. There seem to be alot of clips of divers getting attacked by 'harmless' sharks, like nurse sharks, because divers can't keep a respectful distance. Remember the photos of that influencer who was attacked by a nurse shark while being photographed surrounded by them? Same thing.

I remember watching a shark documentary in the late 90s. It featured the video of Heather being bitten. Shark experts said they thought the shark saw the shadows of the boats in its territory and wanted to lay down its dominance. Not sure how true that it is, but that's what some American shark expert said in the late 90s.
I was gonna comment about this doco (or at least a similar one). We watched it in school. I don't remember why we were watching it, but I very clearly remember Heather & their theory about the boat causing the shark to go back towards her

some of these are really scary! often the “shark attack” videos are just examples of people being stupid and basically asking to be bitten, but the surfer and spear fishing videos where sharks attacked completely out of nowhere were terrifying 😨
Agree, lil’bebe is so cute but I would have try to just take a photo and then pet the photo. Don’t mess with wild animals, even the most cute and gentle ocean pupper can bite you if they mistake a finger or such as food or feel threatened
In Heather Boswell’s attack, did you notice the shark was closer to her head at first, but turned to bite her in the legs as she was fleeing? I’ve seen sharks trailing victims before. Can you explain that? Ty!
yay! I love awareness being brought to people messing with sharks in THEIR homes. Sometimes it is a simple mistake, but a lot of things can be avoided if people didn't antagonize nature! Wonderful video as always and love the new brand!

Happy New Year Kristian! Really looking forward to your content in 2023! For me, the freakiest will always be the free diver with the spear gun. The way the shark comes out of nowhere and then appears again and almost gets into his side is so horrifying. With this one, I do think it may well have been territorial as I imagine if it was a predation attempt, the shark would've attacked him right from the get go, much like what happened to Sam Kellett. I believe, as well, that the shark was just attempting to head butt the person in question and not once tried to bite him. Still, very gnarly! For the first time, however, I think I have found something which I disagree with you on 😂 With regards to the Heather Bosewell incident, you commented that the shark in question may well have never seen a human being before. I, personally, would say that it is entirely possible the shark may well have seen humans before as (if I am correct on my facts), GW sharks are coastal animals and I would imagine that if it was in the middle of nowhere such as this individual, it was in the process of migrating to another coastal spot to either hunt or even mate. I, therefore, would postulate that it may well have encountered human beings before. In the end, however, I also believe that such a notion is irrelevant as such a shark in the middle of the ocean would not care whether the intended prey it has encountered was a human being or not. To the shark, the person in question, this case the man and later Heather Bosewell, was a easy meal. That would be my only quibble. With the final video, I think this is a great example as to why people like Ocean Ramsey should respect sharks and stop doing what they are doing. One da, it will, quite literally, come back to bite them and the result will not be as "fortunate" as this case. The kayak one was pretty incredible and I was thinking the same as you with regard to it being so close to shore. Imagine jumping from one of those docks! And as for the nurse shark video... well... need I say anything else? Again, thanks for delivering such fintastic content! Whenever one of your notifications pops up, I stop whatever it is I am doing and watch and am never disappointed. You are definitely in my Top 3 RUclipsrs and you deserve to grow!
I think you could be absolutely right with the white shark stuff Adam. It may have seen humans before, but we’ll never know. It definitely would have been hungry though out there in the open ocean!
@@SHARKBYTES Most definitely. Out of curiosity, are there species of marine life that actually spend their whole times out in mid-ocean, not just on migration? The one that comes to mind is the Oceanic WhiteTip and perhaps the Blue Shark.
Being a long-time scuba diver there's a couple of things I would never do, and one is never jump in the water in the middle of the ocean just to swim around. There's not a whole lot to eat that far out so anything swimming around out there is probably going to be hungry.
I’d love to collab with Malibu artist, I did reach out for a collab with him a while back when the channel wasn’t as big. But he didn’t seem keen on me commentating on any of his videos. Perhaps I should reach out again soon.

Loving this channel I just discovered. Man two who was spread fishing is so lucky but also so smart! He didn’t freak and swim away face down legs towards shark but faced the shark and swam away while watching the shark so he could keep it in sight and counteract its follow up attacks. Man. This is why I don’t go in the ocean. I was in the keys in waste deep water looking at shells and rays by myself once as a preteen and had a parent scream shark at me and saw an 6-10ft dark fish swim right past me (it was really dark so maybe a nurse?) and I walked on water and never got back in and it’s been 20 years. Ugh

@@SHARKBYTES Sorry, the beach was Boa Viagem, not Piedade -both are in Recife tho'. There are a number of YT videos of the aftermath of attacks on swimmers off Piedade Beach. Ironically these beaches translate roughly as 'Good Trip' and 'Mercy' - they're both notorious for the numerous shark attacks that have taken place there.

I really enjoy the way you break these down from a scientific perspective but you also keep it real and call it for what it is. Your not demonizing the sharks but your also not being completely one sided and defending the sharks like almost every other shark scientist claiming it’s always mistaken identity or an accident. You call a straight up attack with no other obvious reason besides trying to eat a human an attack and a clearly territorial attack a territorial attack and I really respect that about you. Happy 2023, Kristian! It seems crazy that people would risk spending 90 minutes swimming in the open ocean like that. There's a very interesting interview by Heather Boswell describing her attack and Tracking Sharks did an interesting analysis on it. Unsurprisingly Hal from Sharks Happen in one of his videos took exception to the Tracking Sharks presenter's suggestion that the shark may never have seen a human in one of his nonsensical rants: 'I hear something that breaks my brain, I can’t even deal with it. Never saw a person before that? That probably takes the cake for the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I would bet that he would have a hard time finding a single marine biologist to back up that ridiculous comment. I mean that one’s worse than any one I’ve ever heard.' Well, he sure lost that bet, huh? I wonder what percentage of GW sharks have not seen people before, I would imagine a fair number as there are many seal/sealion colonies where people don't usually swim? Maybe as we track more sharks we'll have more detailed information on sharks' long term migration patterns?
I think one of the thoughts on the first one, at least what they were thinking back in '94, was that the pointer was actually reacting to the smaller boat in the background, seeing it as a potential competitor and then went for the swimmer to avoid losing out on the easy meal. But...yeah - stick with your group

Hey Kristian - I know you tried to reach out to Ocean Ramsey and she ignored you but have you tried contacting Forrest Galante about doing a collab on RUclips? I think it would be really interesting to hear you guys together. I know you've been critical of Forrest in the past and, if I'm honest, I 100% agree with you - at least from the impression I got from his TV series stuff. However, he does a podcast called "Wild Times" and I've warmed to him hugely after listening to it. No doubt he makes some statements which I am not entirely in agreement with him on & I suspect you might also take issue, but I also think you guys would also find a lot of common ground and 1 thing I've learned about Forrest since listening to him is he is not so full of himself that he cannot be self-critical nor afraid of debate. He's actually a pretty funny guy and both you and he are partial to a sneaky beer or 2 whilst recording so, at the very least, it'd be fun to see you guys raising a glass together. You should try reaching out to him. They discuss lots of really interesting Shark stuff on the Podcast also and Forrest stated quite strongly how he wishes Shark Week would focus less on what he called the "sexy" sharks such as White Sharks, Tigers and Bulls and that the most interesting sharks are actually the more obscure, less 'sexy' ones which Shark Week tends to avoid - I know you would agree with him on that. Anyway, Happy New Year, hopefully 2023 is a good'un for you and the Shark Bytes channel

Found your channel recently & am enjoying learning more about sharks. I do have a fear of sharks, probably growing up with the Jaws movies didn't help. Do you have an approx size of the nurse shark in this video? It looks tiny, like 7 or 8 inches, but I'm no expert. I understand sharks can do damage to humans no matter the size & just curious of this sharks size. When I saw the man grab the shark, it looks like it's really tiny. I remember seeing the 1st attack on Heather in 1994. Of course it was on the TV local news because the internet was not anywhere near what it is today and no one I knew had anything close to cable. (Yes youngsters, it was the dark ages. 😂🤣😅) Waaay back then, the most things people were doing was goofing around in chat rooms. But it was scary as crap when her footage of the attack was shown on the news! 😳😕
7:50 yea, that's the caudal fin. You can see a few seconds before what I believe is the dorsal fin before it looks like the shark thrashes to the side.

The first one was during a swim call for a NOAA ship based out of Seattle. I knew someone that was aboard the ship. Captain broke protocol by allowing the swim call to go on that long.
Would you consider doing a video to give your opinion on the various new products to dissuade sharks from humans. Like Sharkbanz 2. Ocean Guardian Freedom surf, shark shield freedom, the raidator diverter surf suit, shark stopper I'd be interested to listen to what your view as a shark scientist is of these various devices.
I’ve been out paddle boarding and had what happened to the kayaker happen to me. No bite or anything but definitely a serious scare (also super cool). You don’t really appreciate how powerful great whites are until you meet one face to face

Males are adults at probably around 11+ft and females at around 14+ft. Obviously can't tell if this is a male or female, and tough to say the length of the kayak. I reckon this shark is around 10ft long ish - but it is tricky to say for sure.
The bullshark specialist got his calf removed on camera , in a 1 second attack in 1-2ft of water . Had been studying them for years but took 1 attack to change his life
I knew as soon as I saw that ocean ramsey video that something like this was going to happen. I hope for everyone's sake that the diver being bit will show people that they can't do that with any shark they are territorial. The two divers found that out the hard way. The nurse shark one could not have been to bad because they are small sharks but the other one that diver was extremely lucky that could have been way worse.

I've been scuba diving since 1995 and I have only had two major encounters with pelagic sharks absolutely effing with me. One was a night dive off of Southern California and the other a daytime wall-dive off of Utila, Honduras. During the wall-dive my buddy and I were about 60ft down on a sandy outcropping along the wall looking at Sea Horses when a large aggressive Hammerhead showed up. I was scanning the blue and saw it cruising up the wall towards us, my buddy was focussed on the Sea Horses. The shark came right in and I immediately hit my Tank Banger, a large bead with a rubber band around my tank used to get other diver's attention. I snapped that bead and the shark immediately did an about-face and swam off 30ft before spinning around and coming right back. I snapped it a second time and it spun around and this time only swam 15ft away, before turning back. That's when I had the sinking feeling that this thing wasn't as afraid as it was a moment ago... We huddled against the wall on the sandy shelf with out knives out and calmly breathed as this thing assessed whether or not it could eat us. My buddy described it as 12-14ft, but I would say just slightly less than that, but definitely the size of my dining room table or more.
The night dive was absolutely terrifying. A miscommunication between my buddy and I left us both separated from one another in about 70ft of murky CA water around 10PM. I was along a reef outcropping when I realized that there was no sign of Gary. I turned off my lights and held my breath to see if I could see his lights or hear his regulator, but no sign of both. I started heading to the surface when I paused halfway up, about 35ft from the surface in 70ft of water. I turned my lights off again, held my breath and slowly spun around doing pirouettes scanning the murk looking for Gary. That's when I got drilled by a very large shark. I was being shoved as I lay over the snout of this thing, it was huge, I'm 6'1" and I was folded over the snout as it drove me away from the reef and over the open sandy bay. I distinctly remember my regulator violently fluttering in the current as this thing pushed me along. I was wearing a Steal-95 Tank, and I swung my hip around and smacked the shark in the head with my tank, it made a loud thunk sound. That beefy shark turned away and I saw the side of it for half a second, before I swam to the bottom of the ocean at about 70ft. I had my lights back on and my knife out as I lay on my back sweeping my lights all around expecting this thing to come back, which it never did, but goddamn was I chitting myself. I had to immediately remind myself not to use up my air-supply and to get ahold of myself. That's when I realized that I was no longer in the protection of the reef. I quickly composed myself, glanced at my compass and started heading back to shore. In hindsight I should have made my way back to the reef, but I wanted out of the water, so I headed towards shore. I tried swimming upside down so that I could scan my environment, but I was way too clumsy, so I had to make the decision to roll over and swim more efficiently with very little visibility forward half expecting to get bit any second. When I finally got into about 6' of water near shore I felt incredibly lucky until I realized that there was not sign of Gary. He should have been at the surface by now after being separated for 10 minutes. He should have been up after 1 minute, but still no sign of him. After a few moments he popped up about 100 yards out, and swam over to me with a huge smile on his face and a back full of Lobsters. He wanted to grab our second tanks and go back in, but I only agreed to do the second dive if we drove 10 miles south and that's what we did.
That first video was really just a case of incredibly bad luck. Poor woman. I'm glad she survived though!

I really appreciate the fact that you acknowledge that sharks can still be dangerous and that it's best to stay away because even if you do everything right, at the end of the day sharks are large predatory animals with lots of sharp teeth. Amazing video, keep up the good work

Agreed. The shark propaganda messaging has gone too much in the wrong direction. Went from mindless killing machines to humans are completely not on the menu of a shark and shark attacks are just 100% a mistake in identity so let’s go swim with sharks and have a grand old time. The reality is the answer is always somewhere in the middle of the messaging. Shark attacks are rare, but opportunistic predators and if given the opportunity and hunger they will prey on humans and consume them. Humans can get attacked for a whole host of other reasons: test bites, defensive bites , etc. Why I agree ocean Ramsey is a terrible example for people. She reminds me a lot of Timothy Treadwell “Grizzly Man”. Sharks aren’t harmless stuffed animals. They are apex predators and can be very dangerous and unpredictable and as you say best observed from a far.

I've always been really freaked out by that first video. Something about seeing her trying to get away and being in the sharks mouth out there in the open ocean just gets under my skin.

Heather Boswell wasn't on a navy ship. It was a research vessel - noaa ship discoverer. I've met her as one of my friends was her roommate on the ship and my ex boyfriend was there as well - he got her out of the water. And i worked on the ship prior. She's very brave.

I also found you through the Ocean Ramsay video and appreciate all of the videos I bingewatched since yesterday. Thank you for being objective and openminded. Analysing attacks and just getting their behaviour explained is such a joy and to be honest calming to me. They are not evil or gruesome but great predators that have the potential to be fatal.

I watched the Mick Fanning attack live, and it was incredibly scary. He was very shook up, and his friend and fellow surf competitor Julian, came to his aid despite the great white in the water...amazing footage
Sharks will very, very rarely continue an attack with another animal around. They'll even stop seal attacks if another seal comes nearby. This is especially true of Great Whites as ambush predators, they are at their most vulnerable while attacking and their instinct is to flee at any sense of danger.
And they certainly wouldn't turn and attack the new animal after already expending energy on an attack.

I’m amazed that last diver didn’t turn the water brown 😂 the surfer one definitely had me holding my breath, I was certain it would end with a missing foot or something.
Spear fisher was super lucky and smart with everything action he took during the attack. I didn’t see any fish on him either so I’d bet it was a territorial attack rather than a predatory thing.

The "Sharks Happen" channel by Hal is definitely the best oral attack presenter. This guy is also good. I believe they work together sometimes. But is this a plagiarism of Hal's format? I hate to see someone successful or working trying to be who gets cut by people that steal his idea. I wanted to watch the diver attack but your face was enlarged into the center of the screen? I think it is ok to watch attack videos where no-one gets seriously hurt or killed. I did not feel comfortable watching that girl get attacked. There are some things that should be kept private. Like Dawn getting killed at Seaworld. Well keep trying. :)
@@TheBWWaterfront we’ve been doing shark scientist reacts to shark attacks ever since Shark Bytes began, so I’m not convinced this is plagiarism. Hal takes you through incidents on the GSAF, I look at incidents where videos have surfaced of this happening. The face in the centre of the screen is to deal with copyright, which would often block me from uploading the video at all. Fortunately it doesn’t happen often, but occasionally it does.

To answer your question about which shark encounter freaked me out the most , I will ALWAYS say the Heather Boswell attack. It's the first shark attack video I ever saw and the screams and the reaction of her colleagues, as well as watching her frantically swim away from that freaking HUGE shark....ugh it will always disturb me! Btw, I thought your opinion piece on Ocean was very fair and honestly you're just stating what the majority of marine biologists and pretty much anyone who understands the risks of close interactions w apex marine predators are thinking ! I very much enjoyed that video and it was news to me that I had been misinformed about the fact that that was not ,in fact, a pregnant Deep Blue , but just a different White Shark who had just finished chowing down on a whale carcass. 🤣And THAT is exactly why Ms. Ramsey is dangerous ! Tha kind of misinformation can cause someone to get killed cuz they think swimming w Whites is totally fine, not knowing that those sharks were basically in a food coma and pretty much sleeping lol Anyway, much love Kristian 😊 I'm always excited to see a new upload from Shark Bytes . Gotta admit the clip with the nurse shark made me laugh. The divers thought such a little shark wasn't dangerous and he really showed them. There seem to be alot of clips of divers getting attacked by 'harmless' sharks, like nurse sharks, because divers can't keep a respectful distance. Remember the photos of that influencer who was attacked by a nurse shark while being photographed surrounded by them? Same thing.

I remember watching a shark documentary in the late 90s. It featured the video of Heather being bitten. Shark experts said they thought the shark saw the shadows of the boats in its territory and wanted to lay down its dominance. Not sure how true that it is, but that's what some American shark expert said in the late 90s.
I was gonna comment about this doco (or at least a similar one). We watched it in school. I don't remember why we were watching it, but I very clearly remember Heather & their theory about the boat causing the shark to go back towards her

some of these are really scary! often the “shark attack” videos are just examples of people being stupid and basically asking to be bitten, but the surfer and spear fishing videos where sharks attacked completely out of nowhere were terrifying 😨

Agree, lil’bebe is so cute but I would have try to just take a photo and then pet the photo. Don’t mess with wild animals, even the most cute and gentle ocean pupper can bite you if they mistake a finger or such as food or feel threatened

In Heather Boswell’s attack, did you notice the shark was closer to her head at first, but turned to bite her in the legs as she was fleeing? I’ve seen sharks trailing victims before. Can you explain that? Ty!
I think it’s probably got something do with approaching from behind, like most wild predators will do with their prey

For me, the freakiest will always be the free diver with the spear gun. The way the shark comes out of nowhere and then appears again and almost gets into his side is so horrifying. With this one, I do think it may well have been territorial as I imagine if it was a predation attempt, the shark would've attacked him right from the get go, much like what happened to Sam Kellett. I believe, as well, that the shark was just attempting to head butt the person in question and not once tried to bite him. Still, very gnarly!
For the first time, however, I think I have found something which I disagree with you on 😂
With regards to the Heather Bosewell incident, you commented that the shark in question may well have never seen a human being before. I, personally, would say that it is entirely possible the shark may well have seen humans before as (if I am correct on my facts), GW sharks are coastal animals and I would imagine that if it was in the middle of nowhere such as this individual, it was in the process of migrating to another coastal spot to either hunt or even mate. I, therefore, would postulate that it may well have encountered human beings before. In the end, however, I also believe that such a notion is irrelevant as such a shark in the middle of the ocean would not care whether the intended prey it has encountered was a human being or not. To the shark, the person in question, this case the man and later Heather Bosewell, was a easy meal. That would be my only quibble.
With the final video, I think this is a great example as to why people like Ocean Ramsey should respect sharks and stop doing what they are doing. One da, it will, quite literally, come back to bite them and the result will not be as "fortunate" as this case.
The kayak one was pretty incredible and I was thinking the same as you with regard to it being so close to shore. Imagine jumping from one of those docks!
And as for the nurse shark video... well... need I say anything else?

Being a long-time scuba diver there's a couple of things I would never do, and one is never jump in the water in the middle of the ocean just to swim around. There's not a whole lot to eat that far out so anything swimming around out there is probably going to be hungry.
I'm curious about your thoughts on The Malibu Artist! He isn't a shark scientist but he does work with shark scientists.
I’d love to collab with Malibu artist, I did reach out for a collab with him a while back when the channel wasn’t as big. But he didn’t seem keen on me commentating on any of his videos. Perhaps I should reach out again soon.

Loving this channel I just discovered. Man two who was spread fishing is so lucky but also so smart! He didn’t freak and swim away face down legs towards shark but faced the shark and swam away while watching the shark so he could keep it in sight and counteract its follow up attacks. Man. This is why I don’t go in the ocean. I was in the keys in waste deep water looking at shells and rays by myself once as a preteen and had a parent scream shark at me and saw an 6-10ft dark fish swim right past me (it was really dark so maybe a nurse?) and I walked on water and never got back in and it’s been 20 years. Ugh

@@SHARKBYTES Sorry, the beach was Boa Viagem, not Piedade -both are in Recife tho'. There are a number of YT videos of the aftermath of attacks on swimmers off Piedade Beach. Ironically these beaches translate roughly as 'Good Trip' and 'Mercy' - they're both notorious for the numerous shark attacks that have taken place there.
Man..some of these are just terrifying.

Q: Living in the middle of the Irish Sea as I do, what are the chances of meeting a large predatory Shark if i somehow found myself lost out at sea? I really enjoy the way you break these down from a scientific perspective but you also keep it real and call it for what it is. Your not demonizing the sharks but your also not being completely one sided and defending the sharks like almost every other shark scientist claiming it’s always mistaken identity or an accident. You call a straight up attack with no other obvious reason besides trying to eat a human an attack and a clearly territorial attack a territorial attack and I really respect that about you. Happy 2023, Kristian! It seems crazy that people would risk spending 90 minutes swimming in the open ocean like that. There's a very interesting interview by Heather Boswell describing her attack and Tracking Sharks did an interesting analysis on it.
Unsurprisingly Hal from Sharks Happen in one of his videos took exception to the Tracking Sharks presenter's suggestion that the shark may never have seen a human in one of his nonsensical rants:
'I hear something that breaks my brain, I can’t even deal with it. Never saw a person before that? That probably takes the cake for the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I would bet that he would have a hard time finding a single marine biologist to back up that ridiculous comment. I mean that one’s worse than any one I’ve ever heard.'
Well, he sure lost that bet, huh? I wonder what percentage of GW sharks have not seen people before, I would imagine a fair number as there are many seal/sealion colonies where people don't usually swim? Maybe as we track more sharks we'll have more detailed information on sharks' long term migration patterns?
I think one of the thoughts on the first one, at least what they were thinking back in '94, was that the pointer was actually reacting to the smaller boat in the background, seeing it as a potential competitor and then went for the swimmer to avoid losing out on the easy meal. But...yeah - stick with your group

Hey Kristian - I know you tried to reach out to Ocean Ramsey and she ignored you but have you tried contacting Forrest Galante about doing a collab on RUclips? I think it would be really interesting to hear you guys together. I know you've been critical of Forrest in the past and, if I'm honest, I 100% agree with you - at least from the impression I got from his TV series stuff. However, he does a podcast called "Wild Times" and I've warmed to him hugely after listening to it. No doubt he makes some statements which I am not entirely in agreement with him on & I suspect you might also take issue, but I also think you guys would also find a lot of common ground and 1 thing I've learned about Forrest since listening to him is he is not so full of himself that he cannot be self-critical nor afraid of debate. He's actually a pretty funny guy and both you and he are partial to a sneaky beer or 2 whilst recording so, at the very least, it'd be fun to see you guys raising a glass together. You should try reaching out to him. They discuss lots of really interesting Shark stuff on the Podcast also and Forrest stated quite strongly how he wishes Shark Week would focus less on what he called the "sexy" sharks such as White Sharks, Tigers and Bulls and that the most interesting sharks are actually the more obscure, less 'sexy' ones which Shark Week tends to avoid - I know you would agree with him on that. Anyway, Happy New Year, hopefully 2023 is a good'un for you and the Shark Bytes channel
I think the craziest part about the one with the Great White and the Green Kayak is how fast the shark came out of nowhere and then vanished just as fast.

Just off the coast of port Lincoln here In South Australia. 2 weeks ago there was a whale carcass. That attracted great white sharks feeding frenzy!
Found your channel recently & am enjoying learning more about sharks. I do have a fear of sharks, probably growing up with the Jaws movies didn't help. Do you have an approx size of the nurse shark in this video? It looks tiny, like 7 or 8 inches, but I'm no expert. I understand sharks can do damage to humans no matter the size & just curious of this sharks size. When I saw the man grab the shark, it looks like it's really tiny. I was happy to hear a real scientist talk about Ramsey as I am not a professional and just saw her videos wondering what the heck was going on there.
I remember seeing the 1st attack on Heather in 1994. Of course it was on the TV local news because the internet was not anywhere near what it is today and no one I knew had anything close to cable.
(Yes youngsters, it was the dark ages. 😂🤣😅)
Waaay back then, the most things people were doing was goofing around in chat rooms.
But it was scary as crap when her footage of the attack was shown on the news! 😳😕

7:50 yea, that's the caudal fin. You can see a few seconds before what I believe is the dorsal fin before it looks like the shark thrashes to the side.

Could have most definitely been travelling, and likely not eaten in a long time
the spearfishing one was wild but I know there are many freedivers that when they go out carry a speargun just incase a shark gets frisky with them.

The first one was during a swim call for a NOAA ship based out of Seattle. I knew someone that was aboard the ship. Captain broke protocol by allowing the swim call to go on that long.
90 minutes does sound like a long time to be swimming!

In the Boswell attack the first bite seems to have been a test bite. In an interview she described it as very light, ''like a puppy''.

I’ve been out paddle boarding and had what happened to the kayaker happen to me. No bite or anything but definitely a serious scare (also super cool). You don’t really appreciate how powerful great whites are until you meet one face to face
I'm happy to hear your opinion on the video I submitted! Also I looked up ocean kayaks and found them being anywhere from 6 to 12 feet long. How long would you guess the shark to be, based on when it was next to the kayak? You said a juvenile, but idk how big juvenile white sharks are XD
Males are adults at probably around 11+ft and females at around 14+ft. Obviously can't tell if this is a male or female, and tough to say the length of the kayak. I reckon this shark is around 10ft long ish - but it is tricky to say for sure.

The bullshark specialist got his calf removed on camera , in a 1 second attack in 1-2ft of water .
Had been studying them for years but took 1 attack to change his life
I knew as soon as I saw that ocean ramsey video that something like this was going to happen. I hope for everyone's sake that the diver being bit will show people that they can't do that with any shark they are territorial. The two divers found that out the hard way. The nurse shark one could not have been to bad because they are small sharks but the other one that diver was extremely lucky that could have been way worse.
