Interesting work, again. Good that you you explain in detail, when you can, instead of skimming over a subject like some other channels might. music is good, cool choices.

Excellent explanation Lottie. You never know when new found knowledge will come in handy. Thanks!

Interesting to see how exactly these old systems are build .. and pretty good TL music 😊

Music works for me, and now I know things about a Ferret scout car ignition that I didnt know before.

We used to find the inner rubber of the screened conduit used to perish or swell up causing HT leaks. I used to find that on final inspection doing the RF interference testing in a huge Faraday cage. We used non conductive silicon grease to help pull the HT leads through - Meteor harnesses could be a bit challenging 😳

Obviously most ECE’s did not have quite the problems you have had and replacement parts were more but necessarily available! I would suggest that the cap and ignition lead buttons might benefit today by using an electric die grinder, which is what industry call a Dremel, with a brass wire brush as the cleaning tool though final finish might have to be by steel bristles. I guess the insulative finish on the cap was by shellac which is still available. It all rather depends upon the state of the penetrative points and their conductivity. Jersey Aviation are likely to have caps but you will have your own known sources of supply. The colour of the ceramic could often relate to what other processes were being run at the factory at the time. These would have been produced by firms like Champion, Lodge, Wipac or KLG (Smiths) under military contract and they would have been produced, placed in Sangers and stacked in the ovens and fired with all the other products they were making at the time. Some of these products were left unglazed while others were glazed with whatever the major product required and the small, by comparison military order would be tacked on the back of the process.

That whole ignition setup has seen better days.
Good luck in sourcing some compatible cable

Interesting video Lottie, what setting on your phone camera did you use for the timelapse...is that the Hyperlapse setting ( for an Android phone) ?
In regards to the electrical wire /ignition cord...would an electrical wholesaler have something similar thats insulsted and has the right resistence that might suffice ? Someone like TLE Electrical ?? Another place i thought is truck repairs shops and truck auto electricians to ask qhere theyd get ignition wire, I'm assuming the Ferret is at a minimum a 12 volt to 24 volt system?

There is only one thing missing from this video, just not enough Lottie. I imagine your camera set up so's that you could be seen. Shoot a tripod would even free up a hand.
I enjoyed the music, it was not to distracting while filling the "awkward" silence.😁

I live about half a km from an old mica mine that was closed after WWII, used to go around collecting leftover mica sheets, never realized it factored into spark plugs :)
Btw if you’re tired of working one-handed you can always get a cheap little phone holder with a flexible neck - Adam Savage swears by them :P

The music is fine. While sourcing wire, ceramics and shielding, if you can't find good surplus, is there a modern day equivalent you can use?

That spark plug looks extremely similar to the dismountable ones I had on my motorcycles back in the 60's. Undoing the middle screw connector let you pull the insulator completely out for cleaning. Are you sure that these ones aren't the same?

I don't mind the music. Picking those wires through the slot seems like it takes a while. How do wires like that get corroded when they are inside the crab?

Lotti, how difficult will it be to pass the new lead material through the braided outers for the leads?

    • @lottiethetankwhisperer

Not particularly hard, there is even some lubricant you can use to help it out 😊

id run bosch inductive wire inside the braided sheilds, its almost as good as solid wire and way better than carbon core resistive and you would then have double radio suppression with no loss of spark
