  • Here’s a short video I threw together of the Berkshires in Bellevue event. This event was hosted by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and the Mad River and Nickel Plate Museum as a conjoined effort to bring steam back to Bellevue, OH. Sister S-2s no. 765 and 757 met once again for the first time since the Black and white days in the 40’s and 50’s. This was also the first time that two 2-8-4’s of the Nickel Plate Road have joined together since 2014. I had an amazing time, and I thank both the FWRHS and MR&NKP for their efforts to bring these Lima sisters back together.

    Funny how the 760's whistle doesn't have a raspy sound to it here in this video, but when it was on the 765 back in 2018, it sounded raspy. Ah well. Chock it up to the nuances of steam and steam whistles.

    I didn’t know that one steam locomotive could power another one. I also didn’t know that the 757 could’ve been ran under 765’s power. Also, how were they able to drive 757 into the shed with a steam hose connected to her boiler?

    • @newriverproductions12
      @newriverproductions12  2 года назад +12

      757 can’t hold steam due to not having a boiler inspection. 765’s steam was hooked up directly to the whistle, not anywhere in the locomotive. 757 was shoved in by a diesel in and out of the shop. The hose only operated the whistle.

      @@justahillbilly7777 I thought I saw some steam from the dynamo, plus I also heard the pneumatic bell ringing when they pushed her in with the diesel. Maybe they rigged an on-board air compressor to supply air to the bell.

      Theoretically, you could make the steam engine equivalent of a diesel 'slug' unit by piping steam from a working boiler to the throttle and cylinders of another engine. This would greatly boost your available traction, but come at the cost of top speed since you would not be able to make steam fast enough to power both engines at once. It would actually behave similarly to how the Challenger and Big Boy operate, only their boilers are large enough to keep up with the draw.
      In practice this was too much of a bother to rig up, so railroads would just run the locomotives on their own boilers. Or build an articulated locomotive with a large enough boiler for both sets of drivers.

      It’d be tough, plus we’ve got 2, (soon to be 3 when 2716 is on the move). In my opinion, one operating representative of each the C&O, NKP, and PM 2-8-4’s is good enough for me. It is a bit sad that 757 probably wont ever feel the heat of a fire again, but never say never.

      Very unlikely. Considering we already have 765 running and to get an identical NKP berk up and running again would take time, money, the right tools, the right inspections, and the right people.
