      they were used quite commonly during the war of independance and civil war, even during the border campaign and troubles up to probably about 1980, the IRA had a decent amount in stockpiles from the civil war and before.

    This song makes it sound like the IRA won this skirmish when all that really happened was their commander was killed.
    Edit: Now I think this is about a different incident, most likely the Battle of Courtbane. Either way the account is clearly embellished. This song mentions the use of a road bomb when there doesn't seem to have been any exposives used at Courtbane. And I can't find any other IRA attacks in Armagh that involved the use of both a bomb and gunfire to attack a British patrol during then timeframe of McVerry's IRA career.
