  • When doing some Longbow Archery, particularly clout or any sort of distance shooting, you dont want to over draw the bow, drawing the arrow inside the bow. This could result in damaging your arrows or yourself. We take a look at an item used on Longbows to help prevent this issue, a quick guide on how to make one and the purpose behind it.
Do you do clout or roving archery?

You two are a good laugh :-) . Not seen that before, (obviously illegal for flight shooting), but interesting. (Yes I've stuck an arrow into the belly of a flight bow... very exciting in the trouser department).

Thanks, glad you like it. Not surprised, not many people have experience with genuine Victorian (and ealrier) bows so they havent seen these sorts of things, hence making a few videos on our collection over the years on the channel.

Very interesting. I think I might set it with a short, tight fitting brass dowel.

Done that broken arrow thing; bow flew out of my hand onto the ground and found the tail end of a bamboo arrow protruding from my bow hand. Last sliver of bamboo popped out a week later. Exciting times!

Perhaps during the making of a new yew bow, the belly wedge could be pre formed into the handle? Obviously, this assumes that clout shooting would be the owners pastime, but being a permanent feature of the handle shape wouldn’t disrupt other forms of shooting would it?
I suppose it might make the traditional sleek lines of the English long bow a bit awkward, but it’s just a thought 🤷🏻‍♂️😉

Hmm, interssting thought, though it would affect the tillering.

    ❤ it.
Would a Turkish Siper device remodelled for shooting a long bow work? Save the putting it on/taking it off. Or using blue tape generally. 😊

Have you seen the gloves they used for overdrawing in Turkish distance shooting competitions?

    I'm new to this.
For beginner safety they might use longer than recommended arrows?

welcome to Longbow archery. Yes, we always make arrows for newcomers a couple of inches longer than needed. This allows for your style to settle and for any breakages of the pile from missing the target.

I’d choose red just in case the arrow went through my hand 😬
