Actually what happen there, the black smaller ships that are attacked with water cannon are from the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatics who are usually for fishermen support or science reasons. They were there because they were just doing their job of aid by giving some food and fuel supplies to the smaller Filipino fishermen in the area like what they always do. Before the attack the smaller Filipino fishing boats were parked beside those black ships refueling. Then China came along and started bombarding them with water cannon. In local news videos some of those smaller fishing boats were hit with the water. The Phil. BFAR ships sustained some damage to their radar and the ship because one of those Chinese ship hit them on the side. I believe China will now stupidly make a statement giving their reason on why they attacked those non Phil. Coast Guard/Navy ships who were not even delivering supplies to any military outpost that China always say they don't allow.

China coast guard spotted pointing green lasers to PH coastguard nearby trying to shoo them away (Maybe these are out of reach for you since your media is under your government).
After that, another DIPLOMATIC PROTEST happen but no answer from China about the incident. Philippines tried to befriend you under Duterte's administration but no good result was attained. And here you are. Having a notion the Philippines is the "bad guy" here and your country is just "defending", wait... are you guys being invaded o attacked? The answer is NO. Ancient Chinese lived on the islands of South China Sea. Their relics like temples, coins and china artifacts were found there. These relics are ancient Chinese because at their same time, no other countries reached the same smelting or porcelain making skills. Only China could do that. China owns the 9 dash area of SCS. UN and most countries admit this truth. For example, it was US warships that carried China soldiers cruising SCS in 1946 to declare China sovereignty over there. But later due to navigation improvement in other SCS countries, they wanted to annex SCS so they denied their previous admittance that the islands belonged to China.
An international court at the Hague reconfirmed that China's claim has no legal basis to this region in 2016, which should have been obvious. That area was Japanese territory before WWII, and it was the USA, not China or any other country, that defeated Japan in the Pacific, and took occupying power and decided the policies and borders. It doesn't matter who was there a thousand years ago, or 10 years ago. Losers in war don't get to decide who gets what territory, just ask the Tibetans. If China wants to start and win WW3 to get more territory, then it might have a legal claim. At present, it does not since it definitely win the last one. China couldn't even liberate itself in WWII, the USA and Soviets did that.
