How wall color can cool (or heat) you by over 25˚F (13˚C), & shade can cool you by over 45˚F (25˚C)

- Light colored exterior walls-exposed to full sun-are over 25˚F (˚C) cooler than darker colored walls; while shaded walls (whatever the color) are over 45˚F (˚C) degrees cooler than walls exposed to the full sun.
I discovered this by comparing the temperature of different colored west-facing walls with a hand-held infrared thermometer on a summer afternoon when the ambient temperature was 102˚F (38˚C) in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
I also compare the difference of temperature of walls in full-sun to those in the shade, so you can make informed choices in the color of your building, and where you can more wisely utilize shading strategies to FREELY cool you in summer and warm you in winter.
Keep in mind that LIVING shade from vegetation ALSO gives you air, food, wildlife and livestock habitat, carbon sequestration, and seed for more. Non-living shade doesn't come close to all those cumulative benefits.

Painted my SW wall white and built awnings over the windows. Made a huge difference!
Trees irrigated with captured runoff and greywater on the west, east, an north side of buildings (in northern hemisphere) will be icing on the cake.

Ever been to India? In temple areas you have to take your shoes off and walk barefoot. In the sunny areas they have walkways that are painted white, where it is quite good to walk. Take one step away on the normal stone pavement, and you burn your soles….
Another interesting phenomenon is that air temperature varies a lot on different sides of your house during daylight hours. When I lived in Tucson the air was often 15F hotter on the south side of the house than on the north side at midday.

when i lived in glendora ca about 25 miles east of los angles, we had a patio and took off the plastic roof of the patio. we put in grapevines for replacement of said roof. we also used thermal drapes to help cool the house . thanks for the vid.
True lime whitewash is even cooler. Something to do with infrared wavelength, also emitting all through the night to cool the house
Yep! 100% true. I did a video on this last year showing my forest green wall versus a yellow wall. Huge difference. I still need to repaint my house in a lighter color now that I know.

Dear Brad, I know this isn't within your usual scope, but a related video that you definitely should watch and put on your radar is the "thermal cooling paint with grocery store items" video by NightHawkinLight.
The result of the paint (with calcium carbonate microspheres) in direct sunlight achieved a 30 degree celsius drop in surface temperature, compared to a metal sheet in sunlight. He went through the step by step process and published it all on RUclips, for free! You should definitely see if that could be something for you and your desert landscape!

It would be kind of interesting to see the difference between the sunlit parts of the shaded wall vs the shaded parts. Near to the ground the heat would bleed into the ground and near the shade it would move into the shade. It would be interesting to understand how the gradient looks like. I think maybe you would want an infrared camera for that.
Oh, I'm not even 35 seconds into this video and I'm disgusted to learn that here in northeast Oklahoma we have the same temperatures at Tucson. No wonder I hate the month of July in my state. 😅😵💫😭
