- Does Adam Savage find that people are so intimidated by him that they don't want to work with him? How does Adam get past the anxiety of starting a project that requires skills he doesn't already possess? Does Adam ever adopt other people's expressions? In this live stream excerpt Adam answers these questions from Tested members Andrew Montgomery, Pyromania2125 and Ian Rigby, whom we thank for their support! I know Adam used to say it mockingly, but I still like to say "Well there's your problem..." when something goes catastrophically wrong.
I have noticed that sometimes when spending a good amount of time around another is that a type of laugh, a word, or a saying can become contagious or shared amongst each other.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!
The beaker muppet hairdo is on point in this video.
😆 Meep!
Adam is the physical embodiment of the song "Mahna Mahna".
Adams slow transformation into Doc Brown continues.
Great Scott you’re right!!
LMAO...as I was watching this video, I thought his hair is so Doc Brown and was going to make that comment and yours was at the top of the list. Sometimes i fear this interweb thing can read minds.
He's got the James Gunn look down pat, or maybe James is the one looking more like Adam haha! XD
Heavy
Why? He’s unique and authentic Adam. He has nothing to do with fictional character from an old movie. Personallity and even hair are completely different. Just put two pictures together.
"Enthusiasm, anger, and grief" being primary motivators is extremely relatable ADHD stuff.
yep
Maybe I have ADHD and don't know it (I do mean that, I really don't know), but that sounds to me like the human experience across the board.
@@AlexanderYoon-x1z you're certainly not wrong about it being human 🙂 those ones in particular being extra loud and hard to manage is a common ADHD trope though, and FWIW Adam has also talked about having it
The number of times Adam's musings and advice have helped me understand something deep and meaningful about myself is remarkable. From the clarity with which he talks about his workspace being a locus of control for him, to his thoughts on mortality, to his deep passion for what he does, I often find myself putting down whatever I was doing and just listening to him as I get goosebumps all over my body, knowing that I understand myself and the world just a little more clearly thanks to his perspective. The man's a wonderful font of wisdom, enthusiasm, and compassion, and his way with words is... well he talks real good. I sincerely appreciate him for being who he is.
Same here. He's honestly way up there in terms of people I look up to creatively, philosophically, etc. The man really knows how to use words to tell stories and spread wisdom.
"Non trivial" has definitely snaked it's way into my vocabulary, thanks Adam!
I've met more than a few "celebrities." And every one just wanted to be treated like a normal person. They have people fawning all over them constantly, and that can be very tiring. I was drinking beers with Timothy Zahn (sci-fi writer of note, for those who might not know). Halfway through the evening he asks me "you don't know who i am, do you?" I replied "no idea, just sharing a beer." He then told me who he was and i continued to treat him like i would anybody else. Before he left for the night, he told me "i really enjoyed talking to you, it gets old being put on a pedestal all the time at these things."
And that's just one example. But it's the one that makes me smile every time i remember it.
Wow, I love that you had a beer with Timothy Zahn. I wish I had a chance to just hang out with him like that. I’m sure that’ll be a great memory for both of you!
by far one of my favorite things I've learned when someone is talking to me about a personal issue is to ask "Would you like my advice/opinion, or do you just need someone to listen?"
Mine is "are you looking for sympathy or solution"
Honestly, my anxiety would be asking too many questions working with Adam. He has such a plethora of knowledge and learning new things is a passion of mine. That being said, the hardest thing to fight in my opinion, would be getting over my imposter syndrome enough to bring value to the build and be of use. I think it would be a blast, and an experience of a lifetime to work on something with him, but I have no idea what I would even be able to bring to the table of interest, let alone, what would be interesting enough to do so with my limited knowledge of things.
How could anyone be intimidated?!? You always make people feel so comfortable. You are also so encouraging to less experienced ones. I don’t know you as a person but you seem to be a really nice guy
Sometimes, being nice itself is intimidating. We live in a cut throat society. Experiencing something different can be off putting.
Intimidated? On the contrary. He’s like every art director and copy writer I ever supervised. Creative. Fun. Really intelligent. And a blast to spend time with (even if it’s only on RUclips).
Last week I used a welder for the first time to make a tool to change the shock absorber on my car. The feeling of holding the tool in my hands was quite intoxicating!
I know how you feel about the bench being therapeutic. Whenever I am stressed, going to my electronics bench and soldering a project helps me find my center.
This man alway been one of my heroes ,if I ever felt intimidated , that the project was to big and that I couldnt keep up or I wasnt comprehending something ,I stop take a breath write up my mistakes, and get back in my , I,ll never give up zone . Your show and what your doing is amazing and that's something that we all should never lose site of . Thank you
"i liked the mental holiday, that the difficulty of this task gave me"
a sentence now deeply burned into my brain ...beautiful❤
Adam has always adapted good sayings from others and has it down to a science.
Or could just say "the only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down." - Alex Jason
Adam, you will find the younger generation would be more intimidated than the older generation or your own generation. Whether you realize it or not, you unconsciously speak the language of your generation and time. I am more or less your age and can instantly find points of mutual reference from our shared experiences from television, movies, history and culture. It brings us together, although we have never met. It's the ultimate ice breaker.
You, for some reason, remind me of one of my heroes. Buzz Aldrin. So passionate in all things science.
Tonight the part of Adam Savage will be played by James Gunn
He must have been messing around electrons in one of his “under qualified” builds. His hair is now anti-gravity.
That story about the chair is so oddly relatable! I wouldn't say it's quite anger, but my biggest motivator to do something myself is seeing someone else do it and going "No, that's not it, that's wrong in all these ways!". It's like, I have an imagined way I would do something if given the chance myself, but I assume that my imagined plan is obviously less fleshed out and realized than the plan of someone who actually spent the time to go and do it. Seeing something done worse than I think I would or could have done it moves that "Probably couldn't actually do it well" in my head to a "I could probably do that better", and then I cannot free my mind from torment until I figure out whether I ACTUALLY could do it better or whether there's a bunch of unforseen things in the way that I haven't realized, but by the time I realize the unforseen problems I'm already committed.
The single project Adam that you did that shows the skill level that you have worked your life to perfect and rivals all other builds on this channel to date is the Hell Boy gun, the envy of every fan and machinist.
"Fair enough" meaning basically - "Sure, why not!" with the undertone of "Whatever is easy for you"
Used widely in the UK
I've thought "fair enough" to be slightly passive aggressive, but then again context matters.
I'm Texan, but I consume a lot of British media, so now I'm not sure where my constant usage of "fair enough" and "that's fair" comes from. Thinking about it, I'm not sure I know anyone else aside from my brother who says it regularly. We both use it sort of as a signal of acknowledgement, acceptance, and a bit of commiseration. That and a much less tense sort of "agree to disagree" for things that don't really matter or hold any weight. It's simply acceptance, rather than an endorsement.
Maybe I'm dating myself, but my favorite expressions come from Bob & Doug McKenzie.
I particularly like saying "Beauty!" to express approval. These days the reference might be too obscure, but it has such a nice sound to it.
Eh, take off, ya hoser!
Large project; New Skills Solution. Plan on doing it three times. One to learn, one to get right, last one to do perfect.
The anxiety question was an interesting one. It's something I don't feel. I love nothing more than learning new skills no matter how difficult. I recently went from a person who had never done any mechanical work to building a motorcycle from scratch. I actually bent all the steel for the frame and metal shaped the tanks from aluminum. I had never welded, never used a lathe or mill, and never worked metal. Not to mention building an engine or wiring a complex electrical system. Oddly, it never occurred to me to be anxious about it.
I have found that I'm using "Good Enough" (with air quotes from Superfast Matt) as I've been dealing with the VA. It seems to be the land of " Good Enough".
They don't call him "Savage" for nothing
Regarding the motivation for the Captain Kirk's chair (4:26): Among software developers, that's also called "spite-driven development".
8:19 This is an incredibly useful phrase for working in the art realm. Incredibly versatile, I am implementing this into my speech immediately.
Thank you.
If I was suddenly presented with a real life Adam Savage in front of me without time to mentally prep, I'd be so overwhelmed with so many different things to ask about that i would forget them all, my brain would BSOD and I'd end up like Troy from Community crying in the bathroom when he suddenly met LeVar Burton.
No offense, but you seem like a wholly approachable and friendly guy that just so happens to have had a ridiculously successful TV show and public life. I would for sure have a star-struck moment upon meeting an Adam Savage, but I think you'd do a good job of putting whoever was with you at ease just by being your at-ease self, you know? Also...extreme tangent, but I just learned of a book called "A Hundred Thousand Billion Poems" and it seems like a sort of object that might interest a maker of things. At least it's piqued my interest this morning and led me to tell Adam Savage (or whomever of his posse reads these things). Aaaaaanybiscuits, I hope you're doing marvelously! *high-fives-like-whoa*
His breadth of knowledge would intimidate me! Skills are skills but his brain is intense!
When I started my R2-D2, I could barely operate a soldering iron and my 3D printing skills were passable but wholly unqualified to post-process finish. I learned SO much thru the work I put into that little droid. To be fair, I should have about 3 separate units since I had to redo a lot, but I walk past it every day and it's impossible to look at it without smiling. Don't be afraid to take on a new project just for lack of knowledge on the subject.
People can be intimidated especially when one is presenting as the host, shop manger and expert. When you are in this position do everything you can to be that host to make your team comfortable. As someone who has been in management most of his life I find that having a good relationship to have a Q&A meetings and getting them to where opening up is not an uncomfortable situation but a welcomed opportunity amongst the team
It's easier to dive into difficult projects when you don't yet realize how complicated and difficult it is going to be!
"You didn't ask for advice, but would you like some?"" - stealing this. BTW, I would be intimidated to approach you (born introvert or as a co-worker once said "a recovering introvert" so my problem not yours) but I have watched enough videos of you collaborating to know how supportive of others you are, so working with you would be a "Buckle up for the wild ride" time.
I wouldn't be intimidated by you Adam, sure I would be respectful.
I'm also not intimidated by the camera as long as it's not directly in my face.
I feel that working on a project with you would be a blast and would give me the opportunity to possibly learn a few new techniques for being a creator, sure I may never attain your level of creativity but it never hurts to learn something new.
Love the show, keep up the good work
“Fair dinkum” appears in Robert Heinlein’s novel “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” and is like due to him picking it up during the Aussie leg of one of his around the world cruises. The novel was published in the 1960’s.
I think a huge point that he kinda glosses over is that he spends months and sometimes years thinking about and planning a build. By the time he actually gets around to doing it he often knows it inside and out which is helpful.
6:25 - hits home hard regarding my workbench.
I’m a subscriber,,Even if I’m not interested in the video it always gets a like because Adam is a legend , has earned it and he is worth it 🚀
Derbyshire is pronounced 'darbasher'.
Great work ❤
That is not how l use Fair Dinkum. Born and bred Australian by the way.
Something can be, Are you telling the truth or being honest? As in are you being fair dinkum with me? Or this amazing story is true and it is fair dinkum.
I say 'fair enough'. If someone doesn't or didn't want something as long as it was 'fair enough'.
It is also used in exasperation at someone's stupidity, disappointing or unbelievable actions. 'Oh, fair dinkum man!'
Another great Aussie term is for someone you know is bullshitting you is 'Don't come the raw prawn with me!'.
But that is me.
As an aussie we dont really say fair dinkem
You should refuse to advertise the membership until a check is extended to you from offscreen, then you suddenly are enthusiastic about it lol
In the uk, fair and fair enough are very common terms used
I picked up the phrase "fair" years ago from watching SMB speedrunner/streamer @GrandPooBear . After Mario died in some rage inducing way that would have made me throw my controller across the room, he simply said "fair" and had another go at it. I aspire to have that level of zen.
Love your MA-1 style jacket Adam!
The emotion in his eyes, voice, and body language when he reflects on Grant is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.
I had to Google that punchline to understand how genius it is LOL
I first encountered the expression fair dinkum in Robert Heinlein’s 1969 novel, “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress.”
Adams vibing the current James Gunn look
I saw the thumbnail and 100% thought James Gunn! 🤣
I had tickets to see Adams traveling show in Indianapolis once and it was cancelled along with the entire tour with no explanation ever given.
You didn't ask for advice, but would you like some? 😏
As someone originally from Lancashire and Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire are pronounced:
- Dar-bish-er
and
- Lin-ken-sher.
"Fair dinkum" is basically a regional alternative to the Northern phrase "Fair do's".
Also, just to say I love these kinds of Q&A videos, where instead of a piece of trivia we learn a little about your life philosophy or personal feelings on something or how those things have evolved during your life or work.
Best wishes, Adam!
Honestly I am not intimidated by anyone whose kindness is so apparent. Now, if it were trivia where film, comics, actors, history, science, and possibly physics, then yes.
I don't think the person who is so intimidated that they don't want to work with a person would then also let that same person know that's the reason.
NOW I realize what the Adam figure with the little head reminds me of!! The last scene in Beetlejuice where he gets his head shrunken! That's been tickling my brain for weeks!
I feel like Adam is going to hit that bottle and spilled its liquid at any time!!
Your talent and creativity intimidate me - you do not!
How? Look at him... such a goofy dude... love adam but no intimidation either. Note: my friends used to call me adam as I looked like you back then. LoL
A week in your shop in order to familiarize myself, and I'd have no trouble at all. We might learn from each other as well
That is, if you could stand my dark humor
"Still one of the best jokes I've ever heard." XD
Getting big James Gunn vibes from you today Adam!
‘fair dinkum’ is such an archaic phrase haha, nobody speaking young would use that here in Australia
(to say, lots of younger people affect an ‘older’ way of speaking, but it wouldn’t be associated with their generation so much)
I seen you at MegaCon yesterday! I should've got in your line to say hi. I mean, I heard about MegaCon from you in one of your previous videos. But I didn't have extra money for an autograph or anything and I didn't know if the line to meet you was solely for that purpose. Anywho, for all those of there wondering, Yes, Adam savage looks exactly like he does in real life, too! There's no "movie magic" in any of his videos 😂
"O, sans sarif airquotes" is probably the reason they got married
I'm a maker, you are a maker, yeah, you are turned up to 11 but so relatable that I don't know if I'd be intermediated or not.
I have invented phrases to replace cuss words. Like “kral your phrallet” instead of… “up yours” and some others. My favorite phrase is, “Your opinion of me is none of my business and I want to keep it that way‼️” as I walk away. Applied to someone who has demonstrated that their opinion is not to be taken seriously.
When I'm wanting to do a project I don't feel I'm qualified for, I break it down in to small skills and practice each one on smaller, practice projects first.
I respect friends freedom of speech . I encourage groups it is great levity. Sincerely
My friend group (most of us are gen z) definitely use "fair" all the time, sometimes even "totally fair"
A good typeface joke is always good.
(it's not a font joke since a font includes a typeface, but isn't a typeface itself. People misuse "font" because that's what it was labeled on computers.)
Moods are just fonts for our thoughts.
Liminal spaces has captured me.
Anyone else see his head on a manikin in the background and think he should make an Adam based hobbit with that head.
When I think about fulfilling my bucket list item of meeting a celebrity, I often imagine it being you, Adam. But then when I think on it longer, it kind of makes me sad for a lot of celebrities, including you. You see, my thought is that any time somebody meets a celebrity in the wild (not at a press event), it is an entirely self-seeking enterprise. Even though I truly do care about you and want the best for Adam Savage the human being, I also realize that wanting to meet you really doesn't bring any benefit to you, and it really is about fulfilling a one-directional fantasy. While I imagine you have many enjoyable meetings with your fans, I still wonder if those interactions carry a sort of sadness to them, knowing this stranger's main focus is still on their own experience. It must be tiring and lonesome, and I imagine that is why so many celebrities grow to resent their fame. And through this thought, I imagine that, were I ever to run into you in public, the truly best thing that I could do for you would be to deny myself that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fulfill a dream, and to just leave you alone in peace; and you would never know it. It's a melancholy thought, but I also try to be honest with myself that my desire to have a connection with you is purely for my own benefit, and not yours, and that if I really do care about you, then I shouldn't try to wedge myself into your sphere.
Snapple better be paying you for the advertising :P
Everyone is capable of completing the biggest job its all about how small you make each process. and the intimidating point. every one is learning always adhd buliding with like-minded people is just teaching ach other and learning together by trying chaos
I think building on-camera with Adam would be great! A waste of film (disk space) to be sure, but it would be fun!
I think a lot of people would experience imposter syndrome, if collaborating with Adam. That, or being star-struck to a degree that it affects their skill as a maker.
So the supposed intimidation probably comes from the collaborator thinking "I can't afford to screw up, because I would be wasting the time of _the_ Adam Savage"
The answer is yes, in the same way they are intimidated by an old cat lady.
As a side note: I just bought 6 cases of Snapple.
Adam looks like James Gunn in the thumbnail.
Not intimidating at all! You were the top moment of my "covid era" I was living in SF and saw you a couple of times in the Mission district..I got lucky one time that you stopped at a red light..you were on a one wheel, wearing a sort of a cowboy hat and I firefighters jacket. I just yelled "ADAM!" We didn't even really talked but you were kind enough to understand i was a big fan, we fist bumped and i took a picture with you. Still one of my happiest memory since I moved back to Europe.
I'm not intimidated by anyone. The chances of me working with anyone like that are zero, anyways.
Yeah in the UK we say "fair" or "fair enough" a lot
Hate to admit it, but I'm one of those people who'd be so worried about you not liking me that I'd somehow end up behaving in a way that would make me the one person in the world you don't like. Self fulfilling prophecy, I know, but still... Yea, I guess it's possible for even the most kindly, coolest guy to be intimidating!
Derbyshire is spoken as darrbysha and Lincolnshire is spoken as linconsha
If you are looking for someone who has started a large project without all the skills needed to finish, look no further than your nearest amateur bodybuilder.
Adam seen here cosplaying as James Gunn
My family uses the word "ostensibly"...ostensibly far too often after I picked it up from Adam. I use "non trivial". It's non trivially useful. lol
Who else came here just for the comments on his hair?
I don't feel intimidated by Adam BUT I feel like I could never be as creative or ambitious with making as he is. Is that intimidation?? No. It's comparing a master to me a rookie.
Good morning 🙂
Another episode that was filmed upside down. The cave rotates.
Which sin is your favorite?
No Sir, I would not say you have intimidated me. I can put a band-aid on a small cut but could never do heart surgery, I can use a hammer to break a rock but could never made a Mount Rushmore, I can paint a house but could never paint a Mona Lisa. There are people that I consider "Artist" which I consider you one of. Some people can see and feel things that are not there but they can see and feel what is inside or just hidden from view. I envy you and I'm amazed by you and the many "Artist" like you but I would never think that I'm intimidated by you !
I've used "duderonomy!" on ah, non-trivial number of occasions : )
