Hopefully I will have a good grasp of complex mathematical concepts and hopefully I will be able to have a degree in Computer Science before I turn 40.
This is actually really helpful because most of the time whenever I do trigonometry I just follow formulas and count things like a damn robot without actually knowing what I'm REALLY doing.
he caught me off guard. that was for me like those moments of when you are focused on something and another detail which is irrelevent but enough to spark some interest. I always struggled to make descent circles but I somehow always mess it up at the end...
Man is this what its like being in an Honors or AP class? I'm not used to seeing the teacher actually enjoy teaching his class and the students not being so rude and disrespectful.
No, it's pretty much the same thing you're used to. Even in AP Calc BC apparently (haven't taken yet, but have heard). Every AP/Honors/IB class I have is like 75% people who don't care, and 25% people who actually do care. But college gets better, apparently. Especially because teachers can just kick out rowdy students.
@@B0K0691 The problem is the application of maths is locked behind engineering and physics which most of the time is not very approachable for a teacher, much less anyone else of lower education level. Teachers are trained to teach mathematical methods but very few do the extra work to have some examples of how they are applied in real life (as they technically are not required to do so).
Nam Hoang yeah and also, math by definition is independent of its applications. Its utility is certainly appreciated and wonderful, but that’s not the inherent value or point of math.

About that circle... "Pope Benedict lX wanted to commission some paintings for St. Peter’s and so he sent a courtier around to find the best painter in Italy. The courtier asked all the artists to give him a sample of their work to send to the Pope. He came to Giotto’s workshop, explained his mission, and asked him for a drawing which would give the Pope some idea of his competence and style. “Sure,” said Giotto; and he laid down a sheet of paper, reached for a brush dipped in red paint, closed his arm to his side to make a sort of compass of it, and in one even sweep scribed a perfect circle. “There you are,” he told the courtier, handing it to him with a smile. “That’s your drawing?” asked the courtier, who didn’t know whether Giotto was pulling his leg. “Is that all you’re going to send His Holiness?” “That’s more than enough,” said Giotto. “Send it with your other drawings and see whether it’s understood or not.” The Pope’s messenger took the drawing and went away trying to hold his temper. Did that little painter think he was a fool? When he got back to Rome he showed the Pope the big O and told him how Giotto had scribed it-freehand, without a compass. The pope and his advisers DID understand the achievement of that O and gave Giotto the commission." theorbitbrown.com/site/the-perfect-circle/

When I draw a circle freehand, I try to move my pen with a constant amount of curvature, so it turns at the same speed all the way around. This is actually fairly easy with practice, especially if you go slow. If your "circle" doesn't have constant curvature, then it will typically end up looking egg-shaped, since some places will be more curved than others.

I appreciate good teachers like Mr. Woo, who take the time to break everything down at the beginning. My trig teacher was a nice guy, and he meant well, but he was pretty worthless at explaining things. I was very good at geometry, and fair at algebra, so I expected trig to be within my reach. Unfortunately, my trig teacher just could not make sense of it to me. He suffered from a classic problem that many educated people have. He understood it, and could not understand how anyone else had a problem understanding it. Decades later, when I was an adult, I bought one of those "For Dummies" books that was on trig. That book showed me what I needed to know, but was never made clear in my class. It was finding out that the trig functions are used to find a number that you then take to a set of tables that will give you the final answer. The first weeks of class were spent practicing the functions and I could not see any point because the teacher failed to explain why it was done. I have purchased a half dozen trig text books over the years, and realized why my old teacher made such a mess of it, all of the text books ignored providing the information until several chapters in. Then I found a copy of an old book that was out of print, "Fun With Mathematics", by Jerome S. Meyer. The book all sorts of math stuff in it, but one of the things it had was a chart giving rough trig information. You could calculate a triangle to a degree with just that chart. It made it very clear that it's just ratios. Mr. Woo, have you ever seen that book, or the chart?
I retain information much more when I know the history and the "why". This is great, I'm sure it's lost in the kids who simply have to be there . I'd hope an AP class would appreciate this though.
