Having studied linguistics, I'm utterly astonished by this animal's ability to mimic mechanical sounds so well. I'd love to learn more about its vocal structure....
The basic gist is that they use muscle contractions to squeeze air out of the air sac (like our lungs, theirs are different and spongy) through an enlarged part of the trachea called the syrinx. The syrinx has several kinds of membranes that can be stretched by smaller bundles of muscles inside and outside the airway. A bird like this probably has at least a half a dozen muscle groups inside the syrinx to help make subtle movements. There's some debate as to which membrane does how much. You can read up here for really gory details Goller, F. and O.N. Larsen (1997): A new mechanism of sound generation in songbirds. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 94:14787-14791. I'm studying for a test right now so I've got notes on hand. Hope this helps.
Unfortunately, despite mimicking Kookaburra speech perfectly, the lyrebird doesn't actually speak the language, and is unaware that he is shouting racial slurs.
As an Australian I am proud to say that when I went I to the bush a while ago I played an air raid sound on my phone and 10 minutes later heard a lyrebird mimicking it it was great hahahah
This bird was filmed near a very popular picnic ground just beyond the outer suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Car alarms, phone ringing, cameras etc are just part of the soundscape. Chainsaws are a common sound. They are used to clear mountain ash gums (that are like skyscrapers) that have been felled naturally. Often across roads and private properties nearby. Rangers possibly use them for maintenance and fire management.
Yeah, the lyrebird's syrinx (the equivalent of our vocal cords) is the most complexly muscled of the passerine birds (i.e. excluding the parrot family). So amazingly accurate; thing might as well be a portable recorder (for oft-repeated sounds, at least).
In the 80s I was living outside of Sydney, a place called Mangrove Mountain, near Gosford. We used to hear and see these birds and we became familiar with their extraordinary ability to imitate sounds. One sound I clearly remember was the manual typewriter because a lot of typing was going on at this place.
Sammy Davis because it was colonized by Britain in 1788 by 11 ships carrying 736 convicts, some troops to keep them in line and a Governor to run New South Wales.

Believe about half of what Attenbourgh tells you and that may still be too much, he is more of an activist than anything else and will lie to get you onboard.
This was filmed in the hills just east of Melbourne, very residential, so not uncommon for the bird to hear chainsaws. No logging done in the area since the early 1900's
David Attenborough always manages to get within hugging distance of these amazing birds without scaring them away. He himself of course, had a divine voice. Perhaps, that's why.

Could they? yea sure and that does make them incredible. However most people believe that there's a forest full of Lyre birds running around sounding like chainsaws when that's just not true.

I wanna play a gameboy next to a Lyre Bird and see if it mimics any of the sounds it hears. A Lyre bird singing Tetris or making the call of Pikachu from the original gameboy Pokémon games.
Well he can only imitate certain sounds, mostly beeps. Humans can actually make far more different noises; talking, singing, whistling, growling, barking, yelling etc
There are far too many people on here making stupid jokes and comments. Of course they are missing the bigger picture. This is a stunning display showing the true power of nature.
@@ralphinator2 I have been a few meters away from one in it's native habitat near Marysville in Victoria (Australia) and heard the chainsaw, truck engine, door slaming, kookaburra, magpie, currowong, camera shutter and other sounds I couldn't identify. All sound is just vibration. A speaker can imitate the sound of anything, so can the bird.
Ryan White No, it is the brain; bird brain!
Well he can only imitate certain sounds, mostly beeps. Humans can actually make far more different noises; talking, singing, whistling, growling, barking, yelling etc

Why wasn't the Lyre bird in the Police Academy movies?
Could you imagine seeing this bird and not knowing what it is!?

Out of the hole world I would love there in a heart 🐻 beat
I saw this in the Blue Mountains this morning. Phenomenal. The Blue Mountains (away from the touristy areas) are heaven.
There are far too many people on here making stupid jokes and comments. Of course they are missing the bigger picture. This is a stunning display showing the true power of nature.
Oh how I miss David Attenbrorough 😭
Duh, he’s very much alive.
Cringe
He's 94 years old 💪 God bless.
An amazing nature..

There will never be a commentator as good as David Attenborough
Amazing mimicry. You've almost got to wonder if this is an April 1 release?
That's what I thought!! Just amazing camera shutters and chainsaws WOW!!
I've heard them mimic sirens and other birds, this video is legit.
The sound is real, but the bird making it is a zoo animal. hoaxes.org/weblog/comments/lyrebirds_mimicking_chainsaws
@@ralphinator2 I have been a few meters away from one in it's native habitat near Marysville in Victoria (Australia) and heard the chainsaw, truck engine, door slaming, kookaburra, magpie, currowong, camera shutter and other sounds I couldn't identify. The ones in captivity do hear more sounds, but those in the wild can also mimic whatever they hear. It's impossible to tell them from the real thing.
My jaw literally dropped at the sound of chainsaw
hahahahahah this bird loves to troll other birds.
What a sweety pie.Lovely intelligent creature..
