  • @magnetmountain33

Years ago, bro, I used to surf Godrevy in the evenings with lurch from Levi
One night lurch got out before me, and I got out been surfing for three hours prior to that, and I was still in my wetsuit and had my 8 foot Minimal under my arm at which point some tourists asked us if it was common for people to be surfing at that time, and surprised we said yeah sure ?
And they said except this one surfer is headed out to the Lighthouse to which obviously we started thinking there’s a problem ……… we asked them if they were sure that he was a surfer ? But they said it was too far out for them to see obviously had taken them 10 minutes to walk back from the cliff to where we were in the car park……..
We immediately ran as fast as we could down the path to the cliffs, where the lifeguard hut is……….
Seeing a guy out on a board who was stuck in front of the cliff with people telling him to paddle in and get climb up the cliff. At this point, it was clear. He was a little out of his depth as he was listening to people who were trying to help, but would likely have caused the situation to become even more dangerous.
Obviously none of them were surfers. And as such they had seen the water as more dangerous than climbing 10 foot of the side of a cliff with the sea, and the sheer drop in between boulders sticking out of the water which to us is known to be far more dangerous ?
He was clearly just out of steam and on a short board, it was about 4 foot in really dodgy conditions and the wind picked up that combined with being dark was a problem. The river was running quite fast that day about three or 4 kn maybe more
I would’ve got in right there and then the Coast Guard had already been called but as we thought initially it was a swimmer it was the choice as to whether they were going to go under, without any buoyancy, in which case I had planned to paddle out and wait for the rescuers to turn up, hence the reason why it wasn’t cancelled!
With it being a surfer, realising he was on the board. I told him to paddle out, but he was getting bashed up against the cliff. Unfortunately, I recently had a second knee operation to remove cartilage after an ACL tear and was still in a knee support so I couldn’t risk the rocks as it was high tide across the river at the bottom went across the beach and jumped in at the red River theory being that he was stuck in that current and it was just lucky that I’d figured it was running had a good three or 4 kn so I got out to him really quickly………… Unfortunately, Coast Guard from Saint Ives did attend the time I had got him to hang onto my leash, towed him out through the surf that was breaking against the cliff, and had pulled him the whole way to the edge of the corner, and was trying to paddle across the current from the red river to then surf back in from the peak with him.
The rescue Skiff launched from Saint Ives at that point, came heading straight towards us at about 10 …18 kn and proceeded to run. Right over the top of me. I wound up stuck under one side of the boat and my board still attached to my leash attached to the ankle was popping up on the other side of the skiff at which point, I couldn’t get my head out of the water had a near drowning experience.
I managed to gesture for them to just drive the boat forward. They cut the leash 1 inch from my ankle with the prop of the boat!
At which point, the bloke who was on his short board, had drifted back towards the cliffs again, so I had to go back and pick him up as the skiff was unable to pick him up and had to race to get out of the way of more waves, poor bloke, kept slipping off of my leash, as such, it took a lot longer for me to paddle him back in during which time the skiff made five separate attempts, but the swell was too large and they kept having to run back out and we are totally unable to stop long enough to get him in the boat and was fair enough, he was exhausted just from hanging on in lying on his board, said he hadn’t eaten and had gone in.
During these five failed attempts to pick the guy up and me slowly having to paddle with him hanging onto my leash and keep slipping off there. Eventually we made enough headway to get past the cliffs again and past the entrance of the current from the red river, but now we had a long way to panel back into the beach is the River calories, you out the whole time you’re paddling across it !
At this point helicopter from the Coast Guard turned up, and initially his lights were more of a hindrance but just with a couple of hand signals the pilot. He was a smart as a whip, realised he wasn’t helping , as before I could see the cliffs as people had ignited the lights on their mobile phones to help us see our way back in.
I got the chopper to point is lights out to sea so that I could better see what swells were coming to time paddling at the most advantageous point !
which allows us to see the sets and we had mostly paddled and taken advantage of the waves next to the red River to get in most of the way back in the boat finally reached us just 10 m from the shore or less, and they persuaded the exhausted guy to get in at this point. He was just following anyone’s orders and in a state of shock fair enough, though a good comeback that at least showed they would’ve got there in the end they were working against the waves!
They asked me to get in and I told the guy after the second order to get in to jog on as I said, thank you, I’ll take care of my own safety as I am allowed to do in view of the fact that you nearly had me Ankle off I said take care of him and make sure he gets back in safely !
at which point the pilot, Seeing that I knew what I was doing, and with just a couple of hand signals from me, sitting on my board in the reform next to the river, he pointed his lights into the middle of the beach for me so that I could see the peak of where the waves were breaking as by the time they got matey into the boat, and I turn them down. I had drifted a little Waze back out, and it was simpler to just paddle across to the middle of the beach and catch a wave back in kindly again and off just giving the pilot just a couple of hand signals, I caught a perfect Head High left hand wave from the middle part of Godrevy and kicked out on the beach shore break. And with a wave to the pilot, he flashed his lights on and off and flew off. Fantastic guy !!!
when comparing the two services in difficult conditions, the boys on the boat were looking for one person not two and perhaps there was a breakdown in communication and the message wasn’t passed to them. However, I did try to signal them but with those skiffs being so high at the front end by the time, the guy at the front tried to signal to the guy at the back to turn the boat it was too late……… no harm done now thank God……….
But the helicopter pilot was an absolute godsend couldn’t of done it without him possibly, and the people on the cliff lighting up their phones. Apparently was the idea of lurch from Levi to set up people every 10 yards with a phone light switched on so that I could see the outline of the cliff worked perfectly, and is the reason we were doing so well before the scarf arrived. …….between the two of us we almost managed to get the job done before Services appeared……….
Either way, catching a 4 foot wave in the middle of the night, under a helicopter lit forefoot Godrevy will be something I will remember forever along with pulling out a fellow surfer……… who just overcooked what is now become a popular diet? Out of the water, improving the surfing. And the surfing community are an invaluable source of back up rescue for people in trouble in the water who don’t know it as well as that particular community activity. Surf lifesaving came about because of surfers, and I think this is something that both press and public often forget………
God bless you, sir, and the emphasis, being on all surfers, who often helped rescue people who run into trouble!
Many people don’t realise how much of a practical and useful flotation device a surfboard can be when it comes to rescuing people caught in rips! 🙏😎🔥
