Leaving my phone in a completely different room to charge and reading before bed have been GAME CHANGERS for me. Ramping down that screen time is so crucial.
Ever since finding your channel, I have gotten a library card, listened to Early Retirement Extreme, saved up some money in the bank (and some cash 😅), and started to appreciate my social life a lot more. This really is the kind of video we need more of on here. Keep it up!
I’m so glad I found your channel. The stuff you teach - we all need. Technology is ruining us, and we don’t know how to control our use of it. Here I am, sitting here with my head down looking at a screen haha.
At around 8 pm I put my phone on the other side of the rom completely turned off and read for an hour before bed. I wake up feeling less tired and refreshed. And in the morning I don't turn on my phone until I have eaten breakfast and showered. And as far as caffeine I cut out coffee and opt for green tea. Still caffeinated but not as strong. Game changer.
It’s not a low tech suggestion, but honestly getting an Apple Watch has been pretty great. I leave my phone in a completely different room as others in these comments are saying, but I wear my Apple Watch while sleeping. Not only do I get the benefit of sleep tracking (though one can get too hung up on this), but I can play audiobooks from the watch to a Bluetooth speaker. If I want to close my eyes in bed, but not actually be looking at anything, it’s a really neat way to still be reading something.
Hey Spencer, love you way of seeing things. Would be nice to get a nice review of how you manage and schedule your todos and time (calendar). Iam a big fan of apple calendar and todos and got my other side of work in outlook so it’s like hugely tech based. Looking for a way out
Its hard to wake up to natural light in the morning if your bedroom is on the west side of your home! When I had a bedroom facing east when I was a kid it definitely woke me up in the mornings/weekends!
You don’t need caffeine to boost your energy! It’s worth looking into this more. I quit caffeine about a month ago and now have more energy than ever. The first week and a half were tough, but now I sleep better and have steady energy throughout the day. I highly recommend Allen Carr’s book "The Easy Way to Quit Caffeine".
I’ll check that book out, thank you for the recommendation! I am really hoping to cut coffee out at least every day if not completely, so I’ll for sure give this a read 👍
I have been disconnecting with things quite a bit, but I am definitely bad at using my phone in the evening. If I read laying in my bed, it doesn't take long before I'm struggling to stay awake and finish a chapter.
I enjoy coffee but for the years in the afternoon or late afternoon if I need energy I drink Matcha as you get the caffeine without the crash like you get from coffee.
A question on the Book part. Do you read a book next to a table lamp? Or use a kindle with its light on? If kindle. Isn’t that like looking at a screen?
I don’t normally do kindle at night anymore, because yes it is a screen. But when I do kindle I pretty much never have the backlight on and use a lamp for light, so it’s much more like reading a book. I think generally the screen isn’t the issue at night, it’s the light in your eyes from the screen. But still I do paper books at night 90% of the time 👍
It is a bit upsetting the context that made me think about what it would be like to add pagers to my life style this week, but it is a good question nonetheless. Though i might crack mine open to look for anything suspicious first haha
You should try mate instead of coffee if you want the boost of coffee without the downsides of 100 cups of coffee. Mate gives you a lot of energy throughout the day and doesn't give you the energy roller coaster feeling that coffee gives you. Give it a try, you might be surprised by this drink.

This is the subject that we need more videos on! Everyone I know who has smartphone overuse issues also has disrupted sleep schedules.

I love the Redwall reference at 6:23! I grew up on those books :)
I just opened my blinds and brought out my copy of Walden! Thanks for the tips 😊
I'd love to see a list of your recommended reads

also no sugar after 6pm in your tea.

Sometimes I like to also "put my phone to sleep" somewhere else. It's good for your phone to be turned off too once in a while.
