    I maintain all of my caches and have left instructions that if a cache is missing or damaged, to let me know. If it is missing, I’m happy to let people log it as found after I’ve confirmed it’s gone, and I usually am able to check the same day. I have people throw down caches all the time when they can’t find it.
    Spot-on portrayal.

    I thought your "Throw Down" was when a cacher finds the cache, signs the logbook, then throws it down at the end leaving it out in the open or just leaving it out to where it is easier to find.
    I like the whole "I looked for 10 minutes" part. I believe that has happened to us all... :P

    I've seen these types of logs before and it seems to be by someone who has found a total of MAYBE 20 caches. They'll say "cache is missing and needs replaced". They'll eventually learn. Right?
    p.s. I believe your Wit, Creativity and Originality are the traits you have that got you in to Ravenclaw.

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад

      That's how we all learn, by making mistakes :) Other cachers usually set them straight...hopefully in a nice way hahah. I heard a lot of horror stories from the veterans around the area but it was helpful for me to make sure I didn't do those things. I am sure I still make some mistakes heeh. Woohoo Ravenclaw :)

    Last night me and my mom searched for a good half hour for a hard one. Both of us agreed it was probably missing but we’d give it another shot in the day light. I was honest to god convinced it was gone and we wouldn’t find it because of that reason. ...low and behold..the next day..we found it. I was so convinced it wasn’t there, but try to keep that mindset of “maybe I’m just missing it”.

    I have a birdhouse geocache with another container Within. I receive a log that the wind had blown The Birdhouse apart and the inner container was on the ground and that they are going to place it in a winter friendly location. Luckily when I showed up with a replacement birdhouse the inner container was just hanging in the tree where it originally was

  • @davedennis6042

    I have replaced damage containers. Even filled them with clean swag and a dry log. I have always put the old log back. Except if it's just going to ruin the cache. Some logs are water logged and the owner obviously isn't maintaining it. Please, If you place caches, do it close enough to home that you can maintain them. Don't place one 50 or 100 miles from home.

    Great performance! Funny thing.. Similar happened to me. I went to try to find a "replaced" geocache. The previous was taken as missing. I found the missing cache but not the replaced one!! At the time I contacted the CO to let him know that the cache was in an awful condition. He didn't tell me what really happened, just informed me that I found the old one...

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад

      lolol that is pretty funny. One I went to find recently had two at it. It was replaced but the old one was still there. I wasn't sure if I should sign both or not. I just signed one. I thought the other ones a decoy...nope just a replacement.

    I planted a cache in Hogsback, South Africa. GC6YQW6.The owner of the facility knew of the cache but not where or what it was. The first finder told the owner of the place who couldn't find it. So she replaced it. Then another finder couldn't find either so replaced again. Three in one place!!!!!

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад

      LOLOL Oh wow! I can't say I have seen three in one place but I definitely believe it. I know people are trying to be helpful but they should just log the DNF. :)

    I never replace anyones caches, ever. DNF, then report issues like you're supposed to. Any responsible CO will check, fix, replace, and/or respond to your report. If not just let it get archived.

      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад

  • @gsmX2
    @gsmX2 6 лет назад +2

    Well crap. I guess that I am "that geocacher", although I have no objection to logging DNFs whenever I have done a legitimate search for a geocache. Not only that, but I encourage others to be "that geocacher" if they cannot find one of my hides.
    The last hike I took, we replaced three containers after due consideration. 1. Three rocks stacked behind a tree at GZ? We replaced it. 2. Previous logs talked about getting it "in the pole". No geocache in the pole (verified with a flashlight)? We replaced it. 3. Three previous DNFs with no owner intervention? We replaced it. One of the COs wrote me a note thanking me for replacing the geocaches.
    We give due consideration before replacing a geocache...and I always include "if the CO has any objection to my actions, please delete my log." I cannot remember a CO deleting my log.
    On the flip side: I openly invite people to replace almost any of the geocaches I have hidden. 99.5% of my geocaches are meant to be found: I use good coordinates, good placement. and good hints to help geocachers find them easily---and protect them from muggles. If you cannot find it, it probably isn't there or has migrated from the place I hid it.
    Good job on the video. Like you said, "My views in no way express the views of all geocachers."

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад +2

      exactly, all cachers are different. If the CO is cool with it, then go for it. I have heard complaints around my area about this. It really depends on the CO and the cacher. It is good to know your caching community and see what they prefer. Some COs just can't get out there quick enough to replace and are cool with others helping out to keep the game going :)

    Ouch! I have not thrown down a cache- but I have replaced logs and busted containers! I’m pretty new at this- but I know NOT to place a cache that is presumed to be missing. That said- I have searched and logged DNFs - stating in the log- IT MUST BE MISSING! 😳 So- when logging a DNF what is the proper way to do this? What do you say? Just DNF? Do you give some feedback? I’m of the opinion that people went to great lengths to hide it and others are playing, so any additional should be helpful or at least noteworthy. Giv us newbies a hint Jamie- what’s the proper message? Love your channel- new subscriber

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Patricia. I would say even just a simple DNF is helpful. If multiple happen in a row that will help let the cache owner know they may need to go check on it, unless maybe it is a super difficult one that normally gets a lot of DNFs. Additional info can be helpful too if you got any but a simple log of DNF should be plenty. I know I have seen some that will mark DNF but only searched for 2 minutes. In my case I usually won't mark a DNF unless I put in a good effort. If i am just swinging by the area for a couple minutes and I cannot find, I won't mark anything and just return when I have more time to search. At least those that mark DNF but only searched a couple mins, I may still swing by and take a look for myself also since i know they weren't able to search thoroughly. Thanks for subscribing :)

    Then there’s the geocache owner that hasn’t logged on in 5 years and there’s 6 months of DNFs and a Maintence request and numerous cachers who have stated they tried contacting the owner.
    If people are going to quit geocaching...at least find someone to take over your caches for you.

  • @Hodaggium

    What should a CO do if someone put a throwdown at one of their caches? I had this happen to me earlier this year and the original container was still there. What I did was took the throwdown and put it out as a replacement container for another one of my caches that was MIA at the time. My opinion is that if you want to maintain a cache, put out one of your own.

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  5 лет назад

      it's basically your call what you want to do with it. I would have done the same. take the throwdown and use it for a cache that needs replaced. I know some COs would contact the person about the throwdown and maybe delete the entry and tell them why but that is completely up to the CO. some may just let them know it was there and to just log a DNF next time and maybe even let them keep their smiley. I say it's up the CO on what they want to do in those situations. :)

    • @Hodaggium
      @Hodaggium 5 лет назад +1

      I didn't delete the find in this case because this person had found the cache several years ago, but I had contacted them thanking them for the free container.

    I found a cache a couple years back and messaged the owner that the container was broken. They told me that wasn't their container, I was confused (it had a log and everything). Someone made a throw down and confused everyone.

    Hey Jamie! Just discovered your channel yesterday and been trying to catch up. I hate to say it, but I have thrown down a cache a couple times. Each time it was a LPC when it was clearly a LPC based on the description, photos, logs, etc and the CO was no longer active. It has been a while since I've done it though. I will admit, I have been tempted to throw down a couple of times at caches where I'm pretty sure it is gone based on log history and photos and the CO has passed away. But I haven't done it.

    • @Stardustzzz
      @Stardustzzz  4 года назад

      it's a tough call at times. With a LPC, I can see it being no big deal. It helps keep the cache active.
