I always enjoyed Spooky's more for the characters and lore than the actual game. And it makes alot more since when you learn it's meant to be a joke game that makes fun of jumpscares more than an actual horror game.
For me it's the other way around. The atmosphere of Spooky's is charming in a way few other games manage to capture. There is beauty in the simplicity of going from one to the next, wondering what you're going to find.
Me too! The specimens always reminded me of SCP! I love when parody games like this or Mortis Ghost's OFF are given bigger ideas and are more fleshed out by the audience than originally intended.
Spooky's biggest strength and weakness is that it's a **massive** playground of ideas. There's so many things that can be done with its own formula, but a lot of potential goes untapped in the end product, even with the last DLC that dropped a couple years back. Just the sheer amount of things that can be done makes this game so unique IMO.
A few things to note 1. The monster that you couldn’t tell what it was supposed to be is a reference to an Earthbound character that I believe is called Gygass 2. From my understanding the game is meant to be a satire of let’s player bait mascot horror. 3. I see where your coming from with the walking simulator aspect of the game, but the gameplay is very fun to me still because I find any form of chases in games fun. 4. Since Pastra brought up the DLC, I’ve heard that it gave people Lost In Vivo vibes, which is a Silent Hill inspired game that the developer made after Spookys. I haven’t played it yet, but I’d assume that even with the inspiration you can still get enjoyment without playing the Silent Hill games. Edit:some dumb grammar mistakes I noticed (like forgetting to put “vibes when first mentioning Lost In Vivo, I’m stupid.
I'm so glad you mentioned Lost in Vivo! It's definitely my favorite horror game, and it really is a great game with a lot more of the silent hill inspired stuff that Karamari Hospital and Specimen 5 did. I hope Isaac plays it some day
Little fun fact. Specimen 8 Directly ties into the background lore of Lost in Vivo. He even name drops the big evil eldritch god from LiV in the Dollhouse DLC
You guys made me realize and find a whole new appreciation for the game after the "each monster is inspired by a different piece of media". Specimen 8 is my favorite and I now realize that the reason i like it so much is because of different mythical monsters like the wendigo. Thanks for pointing that out because i might play through the game again just because of that lol.
Who’s gonna tell Baddest that the amnesia inspired specimen was the mermaid one and not the final boss? (It’s understandable since the final boss looks like a Grunt). Plus, idk if they’re going to read this, but since they’re a Creepypasta, I wonder how they’ll feel finding out the red face/final boss is based off of Red from NES Godzilla Creepypasta?
Yeah, you right. The final boss form is more-so tied with references to UNit 731, down to their Cat-Dos Entry. The base Specimen 9 form still is def based on Red though.
I think the reason people like it is because it is a love letter to horror games because specimens like Bab (the one with the blade) are inspired by things like Pyramid head. It does this creatively enough that what they're inspired by isn't super obvious in looks alone usually so it has really good references yet really good original designs in almost every specimen. Also it is funny sometimes but usually pretty scary
One point that I think is very significant for me, is the subtle theming . Like deathtaker and the hidden lore of the cathastrophe behind Spooky's mansion.
Always been a big fan of the game since it's release, mainly for some of the specimen designs (idc what everyone else says I will defend Specimen 2 till the day I die). However I do fully get why some people may dislike it, and this is a fun video that provides a neat other perspective on the game I've loved for years.
I’d say the biggest problem with Spooky’s is the pacing being inconsistent and up to partial luck. I enjoyed the game when I played it, but what kept me as a fan for a long while was the specimens, the bits of lore, and general designs. This is partially why I feel Dollhouse and Karamari Hospital have pretty solid pacing. Still flawed but they work much better as a game due to them actually having proper pacing.
Spooky’s is one of those games that I know I’ve never played, but is so familiar to me that I feel like I have at one point or another but have no memory of doing so
As cool as SJM is as a concept is to me, I moreso align with what you think about the game more than I align with Pastra, and it also has to do with the very little experience I have in the types of media this game is a loveletter to. I will say as a personal comment, the conversation you two had was an eye opener for me, because I have a lot of the same feelings for other games that my friends enjoy as you do. I cannot for the life of me get into Monster Hunter, Fallout, or Red Dead Redemption because the aesthetics, gameplay, and story just does not align with my interests. I thought I was just being picky, but this made me feel better about me having those feelings. Thank you Badd3st and Pastra for giving me that self reflection.
I feel like one thing that might have negatively impacted your view on the game is going through all 1000 rooms in a single playthrough. I dont particulary like most of walking simulators either, I didnt enjoy gameplay of bendy, or any other game similar to it, and if I went through all 1000 rooms at once, i surely wouldnt like spooky's as much as i do, but playing the game about 300 rooms at a time allowed me to go through it without getting bored, and content that comes after the main gamemode is indeed much more engaging.
Spooky got one thing most other game giants don't: charm. And I don't just say that in a cliche way. I do really mean it. It got a premise most horror games don't ever try and pulled it off very smoothly. EDIT: Also the base game is free. Yes. All of that 1,000 rooms goodness for free. Garten of Ban Ban, though also free, only lasts for about 10 minutes in comparison.
Here's my take on it: I like it, and it's okay if you don't, like every game ever. Also most of the specimens like to reference other media, surprised you missed out on the inspirations. Like the first specimen is based on a glub glub from adventure time.
Spooky's was a parody game that was good when it came out but kind of aged a tad due to parodying a bunch of common indie horror tropes at the time like creepy pastas, SCP fangames' general concept and Amnesia, most of which people had grown out of by now
Honestly this is my same feeling about DOORS. Like it's cool and I like some of the characters, but it's just the same game and rooms every time with even less monsters than Spooky's. Hell, most of the entities in Doors are just gifs of a spooky face, like the gamemaker version of Spooky's. I get that it's the super early alpha of a game and I see lots of potential after all it's definitely the best roblox game in ages if not ever, but the entities need some more spice to them and maybe more than two puzzles could be nice in the future. At least all the Specimens in Spooky's are unique in style between eachother
as much as I do love this game I'd say I'd have to agree with your beginning statement. I did find my heart beating a *little* faster actually playing all three games as opposed to watching it, but it's certainly not the scariest/best thing ever. Certainly charming tho
Personally I love the game but it sure is flawed. But thats also a part of its charm. I think thats the main appeal of the game... the charm and love for the horror community. Its strength definitely isn't the main gameplay but the creativity and just the passion from a time when indie games were sometimes simply made for fun. Its the same kind of appeal that some flashgames had that aren't great but simply feel like the dev just had fun with an idea. Plus I think the gameplay problem definitely got adressed in the hospital and doll house dlc. Its a kind of game that definitely won't work for everyone but is definitely special for those it clicks with. Its difficult to describe other than: "It just works for me"
i really appreciate that Baddest takes time to see other perspectives instead of being brash and calling people wrong. It's, sadly, refreshing on the internet.
One reason I think people like Spooky’s is also how it tells the stories of both the specimens and the side stories tied to the mansion’s locations, because the lore involved with them are pretty clever, there is enough for you to get a general idea of what they are all about, and deeper parts of them to keep you talking/thinking about it, from the death screens being so varied, from cryptic for the enemies that are such, to straight up telling you your fate in a poetic way, both obvious and not, unlike Fnaf which puts almost everything behind closed doors when it wants you to figure out the lore, Spooky’s tells you what you need to know, while allowing you to dig deeper and find more meaning in things you wouldn’t think of at first, most notably stuff like the Taker (specimen 9) or even Spooky herself
@@Th3Badd3st joke about you and pasta being a single person (same brain or however I should phrase it). It's like when u really love the game but it's crazy asf like a dark souls game or crazy toxic ex.

I also wish the gameplay varied a bit more, but for what it is, I think it's rather enjoyable. The art style is also something I'd like to point out as interesting, I like how it juxtaposes cute, chunky designs with the creepy, horror designs. As with Mortis Ghost's OFF, the main pull of these games is style and story, while gameplay drags off a bit. Both games need more variety in the gameplay, as they get too easy/tedious at a certain point. I can't help but compare these two games in this aspect, since they are both parody games that have been given a deeper meaning than perhaps originally intended by the fan base- and I don't think that's a bad thing at all!
