Brock Lesnar's First WWE Title vs Kurt Angle's First WWE Title.
Two Amateur Wrestling phenomenons and two of the most freakishly talented wrestling rookies ever; both skyrocketed to the top in less than 1 year.
    But who was better?

@@finbarobruadair2761 I'd say so. But Kurt's was pretty awesome. He did have the first and only 6 Man Hell In A Cell Match.
Honestly my biggest knock against Brock's first reign is how he lost it. Kurt's wasn't the most dignified end, but losing to The Rock is far better than losing to Big Show. Especially since it was the end of his undefeated streak too.

Can I share a possibility unpopular opinion? The finger poke of doom... I don't think that the idea itself is necessarily a bad idea. Now to be clear I'm not trying to defend that infamous moment between Nash and Hogan. I'm just saying that I think there's a way to do it and for it to be good. I mean obviously you can't do it on ppv. Right? You can't ask people to spend their hard earned money on a ppv and then give them that. So if you were going to do it, it would have to be on TV. But the idea of having your top babyface champion turn heel by having them do that, I think that could be interesting.

This result also reflects reality and the passing of time for both men quite well. Even now, Hogan still can't look beyond his ego and refuses to admit his to his mistakes; only advising on how to avoid rightful scrutiny for your heinous actions. Whereas Nash has chilled out and relaxed himself over the years; coming to terms with and accepting his mistakes (most of them at least). Plus, Nash has always had a good sense of humor.

Awesome analysis, Brian. I still think Hogan had the better reign, but I can't argue any of the points made. I think this one specifically comes down to personal preference. Both reigns were pretty shit honestly, but I remember way more about Hogan's than I do Nash's (good and bad), and I actually watched way more WWF as a kid. I love this series.

Just another great video showing that Brian Zane makes the best wrestling content on RUclips by far. It's a shame that there are so many wrestling content creators that cover the same topics, in an isolated and uncoordinated way, and so the audience cannibalises itself and each creator gets a fraction of the audience they should. Wrestling with Wregret content always has the best production values, the most compotent, knowledgeable and authorative take on the various topics. Something as good as this video deserves way more than 90,000 views.
As for the topic itself, Kevin Nash on occasion with the right opponent and motivation could 'go.' But his matches as Diesel were more miss than hit. Even if a Hogan match was terrible technically, he had superstar charisma and personality on display to keep things interesting. Diesel was really a black hole for charisma and personality so if the in-ring action was bad, there was nothing else to hold anyone's interest. So for me, in almost every criteria Hulk's reign was better than Diesel's. The Kevin Nash formula was found in his later career, but in 1995 he was unmotivated, had minimal presence and was extremely unappealing and barely one dimensional. Hogan no matter what always had that charismatic star quality to trade off and demonstrate.

One key thing to note against Diesel was that while WWF house show figures went up, he wasn't exactly a key draw. I know I'm cherry picking here, but the WWF wanted Diesel to win at Madison Square Garden not just for shock value but also in the hopes of building the guy up for their regular events at the venue, as it was still a key revenue maker for the company, especially given how lean 1995 was. Here's the statistics of Diesel's MSG shows, taken from The Lapsed Fan (source: the Kevin Nash RF Video Shoot episode, with data from CageMatch):
*November 26, 1994: 7300 (Nash wins the belt from Backlund)
*January 16, 1995: (CageMatch says 7400, other reports say 5300): (Diesel vs. Jarrett for the WWF Championship)
*March 19, 1995: 15,000 (Bret Hart & British Bulldog vs. Owen Hart & Jerry Lawler main event, Diesel & Razor Ramon vs. HBK & Jeff Jarrett)
    *June 10, 1995:

This video was 2 Sweet Zane. Something that I think would be interesting to look at is quality of challengers. You touch on this a little in the best/worst defences, but looking at the entire scope might reveal something more about the quality of the champion. I'm not sure who would take the point in this case. Hulk had a couple of marquee challengers in Flair and Vader, but the feud with Sullivan and the Three Faces/Dungeon was tough to watch. Diesel on the other hand had Shawn, who took the piss out of him, a lot of awkward challengers like Sid, Mabel, Bam Bam, and even Double J. Bret might have been his only really great matchup but do you hold that against Kevin or Vince? Or maybe even Shawn since he could have gotten an equally great match out of him if he weren't such a spoiled brat.
Would love to see a midcard title next. Maybe Razor (IC) vs Luger (US Title)? Both seemed to always be on the precipice of something bigger but were held back for different reasons: Razor didn't have timing on his side (Shawn, Bret were both there) and Luger was a lack of charisma. Now sure, Luger had a couple of main event runs, but they aren't exactly memorable for the right reasons.

Very Great comparison Zane. These two definitely represented "champions with too much booking power". There is also their similar approaches to feuds. On one side , you have Hogan still playing the heroic and cool "monster slayer". On the other hand is Diesel ; the hero of the future with the cool attitude and also fought the big baddies like King Kong Bundy , Bam Bam Bigelow , Sycho Sid , and King Mabel. In the end , these two reigns represented the weird year of wrestling that was 1995.
