i'm setting up for a similar job- cracked coolant overflow tank and wondering how far to take the repairs and coolant system refreshment on a 2003 Corolla which leads me to thinking about replacing the thermostat too. So thank you VERY much for making this video and Aloha!
Ive had the same recurring problem, inside the rim where the thermostat gasket sits is ruff. If you run your finger in there you can feel it. I polished it with some 2k grit sand paper before replacing the thermostat and housing and waterpump. I figured this out after examining the thermostat gasket and finding slight depressions where it was pressed over the ruff surface of the groove the thermostat sits in.
I know this is old. We have a 2005 corolla, with the 1zz-fe. Australian. We have done half million km. Ours just started to leak that was noticeable yesterday. Tonight whipped it apart. Our plastic housing was warped, I suspect with it wobbling before loosening the bolts yours is the same. I sanded it down to remove the warp. It hardly wobbles at all now. I did use a small amount of sealant to. Let's see what tomorrow brings!
good ideas
