I’m starting hockey again and I’m a bit rusty on skating, but I forgot how to hockey stop😕. I watched you’re video and it helped a lot!!!😁😁😁Thanks a lot🙂
My buddy is a Canadian on the other side of the river back home. His Grandpa played till he was 85 in the men's league... Go as long as you can! Way to go! Just remember when getting back to switch your brain over to sliding first... get those edges sliding .... then you can worry about digging and stopping later.
Ok thank you so much!!! Thanks for the advice. And that crazy how he played that long, I would love to play to 85! Thanks again and keep up the good work and humor!!
@@chloe_j_kelly I would go with a site like this to help you figure that out if you can't get measured at a local shop...www.purehockey.com/support/bauer_hockey_skate_sizing/pg_id/20202/
For beginners, go with a 5/8" sharpening instead of the typical 1/2" radius. The 1/2" will give you too much "bite" and that's where the fear of falling comes from.
Good call and great point. We used to rub our freshly sharpened steel on wood to dull it up when there was a stopping lesson. This would definitely help with the sliding across the ice instead of such a sharp bite. Thanks Ciscoho!
For most players at any age learning the 2 foot stop, it's the biting action that makes them afraid of catching an edge and falling. As a result, they fight the lean, stand back upright and naturally lift the back skate and/or go into a one-foot or pizza stop. Thus they never fully learn the 2 foot stop.
Sorry mate one of the reasons lm gonna get me my own skates this month is because l think its signicantly better than the skates they give u if u dont have, lm a decent skater its just with the skates they give i cant hockey stop however l have a weird stop i do because with the normal skates they give u it seems very very hard to hockey stop is this die to the blade?
@@Ciscoho This was my number one problem on ice skates. So much so that I gave up on it and played roller hockey instead for years and years. I literally thought there was something wrong with me and that I couldn't hockey stop. Come to find out is because it was all the idiots around me telling me to get a half inch hollow on my blades. Every time I tried to stop I made ridiculous noises and chattered like crazy. It wasn't until a few years ago that I started playing around with different hollows and found that my sweet spot is 9/16. Ever since going to 9/16, not only have I been able to shuffle properly but I've also been able to hockey stop and scrape the crease before a game. It's amazing how many videos there are with people teaching you how to hockey stop but almost no one talks about the hollows on your blades which is just as important if not more important than your technique when trying to execute any sort of gliding movement on your skates.
ive started skating again with my kids, not been on the ice in about 20 years i can only stop with right foot outside. Cant do left foot outside feels so alien. goin to take this video to the ice lol back to basics
I hear ya! I always tell players that one side is going to come quick and then "my left" is the slow kid in math class. Takes longer...needs more communication and slow it down. Get away from thinking about stopping and try to slide first. You can even practice and try to get the right pressure and control with your left on a slide board. Good luck and thanks for watching! Coach Ryan
dude i havent been on the ice since 2 years due covid here in germany… this week i was rusty/shaky as hell on my first time back on the ice. I am afraid that I cant be good enough anymore tbh.. tomorrow I‘ll try your advices. Anyways, thanks for the video
*It will come back! Always does.... 2 years is a long time to be off, but that just means it will take a bit longer to get the feel back. @@DuPrawPowerskating thank you! the problem I have is that I only stop with my right foot and not with the left as well. I don’t know why but it pisses me off. Everytime I was a bit annoyed with myself, cause I didn‘t now why the hell I am not able to stop with my lefty. Do you have any tips for that, or is it just to train the left food?
@Space I hear ya! just like my video where I call my left the slow kid in math class! We all have a non dominant side that gives us fits.... @@DuPrawPowerskating well thank you! I´ll try it tomorrow :) how long do you think, does it take to be able to stop with both feets and not just with my righty? Very curious about that, cause I wanna do it ASAP.
@@snowcat96 the problem some players do coming back is working on both instead of independently. I would suggest working on sliding with the left only for a bit until you get the feel back and keep working on stopping with 1 then add the other skate later! Good luck!
I will work making a video for on-ice drills, but check this one out that most people miss. ruclips.net/video/L4EhbQScP3Q/видео.html A lot of edge work comes from ankle control and strength. Current hockey boots are so stiff when tied really tight players learn how to lean body weight, but not ankle control and flexibility.
Hopefully this will help as there are many variables and I haven't seen video on your stops....it can be one of the following....too sharp and non dominant ankle is not strong enough or communication is not strong enough with muscle memory. Too much weight , pressure, focus on complete stop and think more slide first before you stop. Get on a neutral flat edge and not inside or outside. Look at ankle flexion and how you tie your skates. Without seeing how you stop it and body mechanics...it could be numerous things.
hi, there is always something to learn to improve your skills, I would like more of the right material, and useful, and a little more serious. Good luck.
I ask myself if I'm actually doing it right on the ice, I have a few synthetic skating tiles at home and it feels so easy on them. On real ice I feel like I'm doing it wrong even though I hear my skates sliding.
You can actually use the resistance from the skating tiles to make it easier , then you lose all of the resistance when you hi the ice. Send me a video clip .... happy to take a look! - Coach Ryan
I would have to see video of your body position, ankle position, and where you are shifting your weight....another hack is to learn with a little bit more of a duller edge and not super sharp! Wishing u the best out there!

I'm fairly good at the fence crash stop.
What type of synthetic ice is that? It looks like it mimics real ice pretty good!
It does...it's pro grade that the Nashville Preds use...if you email me I can send all their info to you.
My inside skate seems to catch especially when Newly sharpened. Am I not putting enough weight in it and too much on outside or maybe too parallel?
