  • Galen Emanuele on "Improv to be a Better Human Being" (Yes, and...) at the inaugural TEDxBellingham event on November 12th, 2013.

As the president of Shift Yes, Galen transforms organizations by showing them how to apply the principles of improv to be more successful in business and life.
He has been performing and teaching all levels of performance and applied improv for almost 10 years, and has over 16 years experience in sales and marketing. He spends his time making the world more awesome by providing staff development workshops and keynotes for tons of different organizations and thousands of people. He also started Pass The Hat, a brilliant non-profit that provides financial relief to local families facing tragedy.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

"Say yes to the person, but no to the idea." If you want to express an opposite opinion. Brilliant.
Reminds me of the concept of validating a person you care about but rejecting a set of their behaviors that offend you.

I watched this at the request of my daughter and sent her this message. Then it occurred to me that many people might be in my same shoes. "I agree. Yes, and... Is simple and brilliant. I know that I often say no. But it is very often the same careless no, not usually a kick you in the teeth no or a cease and desist no. It took me years to realize that my Dad wasn't shooting down my ideas when I came to him with excitement. He was troubleshooting in advance of trouble. He wanted to prepare me for the worst and instead I took it all wrong and got shot down. I know I have told you that before. I will likely tell you for the rest of my life. But the reason for that is to show you that perception can be your best friend or your worst enemy. You must decide, so choose wisely."

The worker who said no to picking up a piece of paper was just practicing an advanced improv technique called Empathy which is cool because the Department Feud became a very funny and interesting Harold in my brain.

Also say yes to yourself, and your boundaries, your self care, your strong feelings, your safety. Say yes to your self wanting to leave, having a bad feeling about something.

The only occasion when you have to say NOOOO is when some enthusiastic con artist (in an Enron or theranos kind of business) comes to tell you “Hey I bring you a good opportunity to make money, so invest with me (give me your money)”.

+Isaiah ben had the father been positive, he would've realized that 'Yes' was the right answer. Also, he wasn't making the son look good by turning down his idea

He could start with "yes" saying "it is great you want to do this, this is a big challenge i am proud of you...." And only after this to say his objections and the things that worries him . Than it will be accepted much better by the other party. It is always better to start with "yes"

That's actually a negative thing to say, people's ideas are set for a reason, they think about them in a positive way because they know in their heart they can make them work, when they share their ideas to others they do so because they trust in those people as supporters, when instead they discover they are negative people, they are rather likely to cut them off from their lives.

Let me know if you want a public speaker on improv that doesn't spend the first 2 & 1/2 minutes telling you how NOT to do it.
