Even though Bill Spooner was the heart and soul of The Tubes, if Gary Cambra was the second guitar instead of him from the beginning, I think they would have reached a much bigger audience. There's some serious rock-n-roll songwriting chops going on here. 'Not The Tubes' you might say? Well, maybe...but I think it's a great album nonetheless.
    (Nice upload. Thank you.)

But what is The Tubes, really? If a style change means it's not The Tubes anymore, then they stopped being The Tubes when they released Now. The Tubes have always been changing their style from the orchestral sound of the original album, the punk tunes of Remote Control, the classic rock feel of The Completion Backward Principle, to the pop rock style of Outside Inside and Love Bomb. Genius of America is just another example of The Tubes taking on a new style of rock and doing it as well as they always do.

Fee once commented to me during a radio interview, when I said I was enjoying this album...something like, "Aww, we're about to make a real record." Not sure why he would say that. Was this a low budget, home studio effort? If it was, so what? That's how it's done these days.

It was released on Popular Records out of Massachusetts. I've never heard of them before so I'm guessing they're a small Indie label. High-quality package nonetheless - lyrics, band photos, nice overall concept, great songs, and awesome engineering. I think it's a fine addition to any rock-n-roll collection, and you can be totally neutral about The Tubes and still enjoy it...it's that good.

Agree - plus - No Vince or Michael who were so important to the Tubes sound. :-( The producing isn't so hot either - kind of flat and monotonous.
