  • Having arrived at our destination, Snarestone Terminus we walk to the end of the canal where there is a boat turning circle, and I give a brief history about the closure of the last eight miles due to mining subsidence, and plans for re-instatement. Sally and I sum up our trip and thank viewers for watching.
    Our cruise takes us to and along the 22 miles Ashby Canal, via the Grand Union Canal, North Oxford and Coventry Canals, passing through Watford Locks, Braunston Tunnel, Braunston and Hillmorton Locks and Newbold Tunnel.

    Greetings both. At last we have caught up with your output. Obviously we passed like ships in the night around Christmas..... getting over my op. but Ashby has been a very relaxing watch but your situation with near miss in lock we can see as upsetting in the extreme. Keep well. Bob and Helen.

    Hi Alan and Sally, really enjoyed your cruise down the Ashby. Watch out for that lock in Braunston on the way back, should be fine going up in the lock though. Looking forward to your next adventure or visit somewhere. Shame you never got to fulfil your wishes to work in the film industry, you would have been great at it. Glad you both loved the cruise, take care and have a great weekend

    The towpath was clearly closed i'm surprised you filmed actually walking down it I think the canal was closed off because of Badgers Interesting video

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  Месяц назад +2

      Glad you enjoyed it Colin. There is a public footpath that crosses the bridge just before the turning circle. I now realise we could have walked along the opposite side of the canal.

      Yes, I was surprised you went against a 'Footpath Closed' sign. Reg was being the sensible one here by refusing to go round it.

    Incidentally you can sponsor a plain brick in the Gilwiskaw aqueduct for £10. Inscribed bricks are £100.

      @MyNarrowboatVenture  29 дней назад

      Thanks Melvyn, I did realise that later on, but the focus at the time was on the inscribed bricks appeal.

    Although as Leicester County Council's ownership of the final end of the the Ashby and their tardiness in sorting the Transfer Order meant that they had to fund the breach in 2019 they seem to be slow to sort out the badger undermining now. It's been closed for three years or more and they seem in no hurry to sort it this time and the lack of traffic is resulting in the weeding of the section. How long before this state of affairs means that the restored section needs restoring again and what incentive do the volunteers have for progressing?

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  29 дней назад

      Hi Melvyn, I did some research on the badger sett yesterday and found an award notice dated 18-Sep-2024 stating a contract had gone to Rothen to remove the temporary dam, sheet pile to create a new bank, install gabion baskets between the piles and existing bank, and to install a new towpath along the edge of the newly created bank. To be completed by September 2025. You can find it on bidstats.uk tenders 2024 w38 830931182. You need to put slashes in between the gaps. Hope that helps.

    • @melvynforman7581
      @melvynforman7581 29 дней назад

      Great news Alan. Perhaps with the on-costs that the county council have had to find for work on this section they might be more inclined to sign off the Works Order. It's been rumbling on through County Hall's legals for years - no doubt they rue their own tardiness!

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  29 дней назад

      @ Let’s Hope common sense prevails and they pass it over, after the works have completed.

    Hi both excellent video as usual great drone footage. As a non boater Alan, when and how was the canal terminated at the winding hole. BTW Heidi did this a couple of years ago can't quite remember. Best regards to you and Sally and Reggie bless him from Chester. PS so sad about the recent breach, not sure Peel will foot the bill, many millions. Take care.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  Месяц назад

      Thank you very much Philip. By 1966 the canal had been shortened by 8 miles, I don’t know when the turning circle was added. My previous Ashby series was made in 2019. My thoughts are similar to yours on the Bridgewater. All the best, Alan, Sally and Reggie pug.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  Месяц назад

      Thank you very much. If you look at the auto captioning you’ll see why. It’s not perfect, as it can’t pick up on place names, as an example, but if you compare with other vlogs you watch, you might be more understanding. At least I am understood, when I speak, many viewers have told me that🤠

  • @kenfairbank1923
    @kenfairbank1923 Месяц назад

    There was a barrier and a sign clearly stating "Towpath Closed". Instead of respecting the reasons - the welfare of the badgers - it felt like all you were interested in was filming yourself getting to the end of the canal. Especially disappointing attitude from someone who volunteers with the CRT.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  Месяц назад

      We were told it was ok to use the towpath to reach the end. There was no signage to suggest it was closed because of badgers?
