The guitar case machine guns was so cool when i was a kid. Man, i wish they would make a prequel so we can get a backstory on the mariachi reinforcements.
@@yungpapi yeah, I know that's the prequel to Antonio Banderas's character. I'm talking about a prequel for the mariachi dudes with the guitar machine guns/rocket launcher.
This entire trilogy is one big passion project, but also a technical feat on Robert Rodriguez's part. El Mariachi released in 1992 and all he had, through the means of being a voluntary human puppet, was 7,000 dollars (Roughly 15,000 in todays US currency) to produce it, having done it in 14 days and releasing it originally at the Toronto International Film Festival and Sundance. If you read what he did to make the film feasible, it's astounding. From filiming it silent and going to post production to include the audio to keeping several bloopers into it to boot. The man is akin to the earliest hits of George Miller in Mad Max (I.E.: Guerilla filming, using his own stuff for props and set pieces like his old Mazda van) Desperado was a result of his first films massive success, so getting Antonio Banderas coming in to replace Carlos Gallardo (OG Mariachi) was a deliberate feat to sell the movie to a mainstream audience, it also helped he went to a budget that was a thousand times the amount he did (7,000 USD to 7,000,000 USD). This was also Salma Hayek's breakout role and what solidified her status in the industry, as well as becoming an on-off Rodriguez regular next to Banderas. Even Once Upon A Time in Mexico is a technical feat, besides George Lucas and a handful of others, he was one of the first to take in the HD revolution that was occuring in the early-to-mid 2000s, which you can tell by the way the frame seems really smooth, especially in the scene with Sands shooting the cook. This was also a culmination of all 3 films' plots into one consistent film if you think about it, but with an emphasis on making Mexico look beautiful rather than the yellow filter sh!t we get these days to emphasize Mexico in a scene. Without these 3 films, Rodriguez wouldn't have been able to have his career to do things like Planet Terror and Sin City. Wish he got more work, he's got some serious talent
Crazy how this trilogy not only led to Robert making From Dusk till Dawn, Planet Terror, Machete, and Alita: Battle Angel, it also led to the creation of Spy Kids, Shorts and Sharkboy and LavaGirl. He's a pretty diverse director.

Did wanna read all the comments but im sure one says this. But cool side note is the gun that Salma Hayek says "I don't even wanna know what that" is was the crotch revolver gun that was used in the movie From Dusk Til Dawn.
I’ll say I love this movie , it’s a staple of my childhood. I don’t want to be that guy but Antonio Banderas is not Mexican or Latino for that matter and really should have had someone else but money talks. People would pay more to see Banderas over some other Mexican actor at the time. On the other hand though El Mariachi is a bad ass character and Banderas played him with lots gusto. Rodriguez made a fun film Call blue beetle cringe or what you will at least it made an attempt to create a Latino film about a Chicano character with actual Latino actors. I will admit though doesn’t necessarily guarantee it will be a well made film or well accepted. I will say for those that are unhappy that there are not enough good representations of Mexicans in cinema, if you think you could do better produce your own film or story. There are people out there that are willing to create it , I guarantee you that. Salud, thanks for the film review.
Literally the reason i grew my hair long when i saw this as a kid Also very disappointed when i found out him and selma hiyak were not a couple. There perfect together
Oy ya, it was that guitar rift that set the tone. Next thing you know the tone and we were all following this candle in the dark. Then Salma shows up and Gotdamn! And it gets better and better.
I was going to give your review an eight out of 10, but then, your last half of the review talking papas on the ending caused me to give you a 7 out of 10. In the climax battle our hero literally loses his two buddies that come to help him. They were real costs to that awesome action sequence. I absolutely love this movie and consider its a Mexican superhero movie classic.
I was a little upset first when I didn't get my chon chon, but it doesn't matter. You slay on every review, and the chon chon is just a bonus. You're a candle in the darkness. Also, where the shit did you find that old ass vampire with the dude flashing the swastika? That had me laughing so hard.
Salma Hayek continues to be my celebrity crush and it’s thanks to this movie. I watched it when I was a young boy and the moment she came onto screen, I fell for her 😍
Desperado is one of the best Mexican based movies ever made in my opinion, it had a lot of good actors in it, it had great Gun-Fu, and the story/lore is awesome. It’s one of my favorite stories in an action movie because it had a great main character that had a lot of mystery to him, and he is such a great antihero in all of action cinema. I also loved Once upon a time in Mexico too because it continued the Matiachi’s story too.
It still a Superhero even if its not from comic book As long as its bring the value of "Heroism" with their own morality Some of best Superhero film from other country that i've watch doesnt always consist of people with superhuman power, just peak human ability and performances already enough
My cousin and I snuck into this film at 15 yrs old and dude it was fucking amazing. Rodriguez and Tarantino changed the Film landscape. In 1995 in the fall, many cult classic movies were released.

I'm just some white guy, and I agree that the Desperado or Mexico Trilogy is pure awesome. El Mariachi wasn't bad at all and I believe underrated as a movie can be. Desperado, well you said it all. Once Upon a time in Mexico is the best night cap you could give this particular Trilogy, yes it is over the top and pretty cheesy however.... what else do you do with all the escalation of these films? Love the cast as well in the 2nd and 3rd film. I believe the cast is changed and reused/repurposed due to either actors not being available or just because the budget for the films increased. Great video.

Rodriguez made a fun film
Call blue beetle cringe or what you will at least it made an attempt to create a Latino film about a Chicano character with actual Latino actors.
Literally the reason i grew my hair long when i saw this as a kid
Also very disappointed when i found out him and selma hiyak were not a couple. There perfect together
I grew up watching el mariachi and desperado and damn I fcking love them
I lived in the city this film was filmed in. I got to ride in the limousine they used. It was filmed in acuña coahuila Mexico.
Thanks unc was starting to miss you.
The double minigun guy is the actor of the Mariachi from the first movie
Zorro is also pretty good though. But Desperado is truly one of a kind.
Robert Rodriguez is a Mexican American Hero man. I will forever love the Mariachi Trilogy. I just hope that he gets to make Alita 2.
Oh yes. Desperado is one of my favorites!
This movie is the reason I have a guitar case for my 300 BLKOUT AR pistol. Such a great film.
Haha you literally went with Juan Wick! 😂 YES! That was my vote!
It is funny because with this and Zorro Antonio really carried the latino superhero genre
It's unfortunate we (Latinos) don't have that representation in Hollywood these days. A mega star Latino male
I watched it when I was a young boy and the moment she came onto screen, I fell for her 😍
"Still one of the best action films of the '90s! Antonio Banderas is a total legend as El Mariachi.
Desperado is one of those films that just stay with you as an awesomeness benchmark
That "Ohhnoo , creeengeh" made me laugh out loud 😂
It still a Superhero even if its not from comic book
As long as its bring the value of "Heroism" with their own morality
Some of best Superhero film from other country that i've watch doesnt always consist of people with superhuman power, just peak human ability and performances already enough
The best example is Old Boy from South Korea
My cousin and I snuck into this film at 15 yrs old and dude it was fucking amazing. Rodriguez and Tarantino changed the Film landscape. In 1995 in the fall, many cult classic movies were released.
Blue beetle was cool, but damn Desperado is one of my all time faves.
Just got recommended this video and I gotta say I feel like your channel was tailor made for me bro and hell yeah, Desperado is a hood classic and I love the original Mariachi
Keep it up, this was good shit!!
Glad the algorithm worked its magic 🪄 🔥🫡
@@theoldbarrio9589 your editing and unapologetic humor had me dying
Just watched it again last year. Still as great as it was day one.
Thanks Brother. Love your vidz. Hella funny. And I have felt the same exact way bout this flick. It’s been playing this week in hbo and I rewatched it but once the two other guitar dudes come I changed the channel. Though the end when the brothers talk is cool to me. Anyway good lookin homes. My only complaint is that you don’t have more videos lolol for real
Glad you use the scream from Flapjack still at the beginning of all your videos. At least that’s where I know the sound effect from.
Its cool you're posting more frequently bro.
Dude I'm dying from your Aura transition.
Desperado was the John Wick of the 90s! I loved this movie! I have watched the mariachi bar scene so many times! Great stuff.
And then...Selma Hayek.
Barrio classic grew up worshipping this film.
Nah bruh you tweakin wit that “which side you choosin “ thing lmfaoooo
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. The guitar case rocket launcher was the coolest thing.
