The first time I ever cosplayed at a convention, I was told by a random cosplayer I had never met that I was "too fat to be Hermione."
I found that comment extremely difficult to take, despite being fairly confident about my body, because Hermione is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time.
Thankfully, those kinds of people in the cosplay community seem to be few and far between, because for the rest of the convention, I heard nothing but good things about my costume.
I think it's important to talk about staying non-judgmental about cosplay, but I think it should also be celebrated that this community is often so accepting and supportive of one another.
I'm glad to see that one ignorant jerk didn't turn you off of cosplay. There's no such thing as "too fat" in real life, so why should it exist in cosplay? You're literally wearing your fandom on your sleeve, and that counts for a lot more in my book than what you look like.
Who the f were they to say that to u! How rude! Good on u for being confident!
I felt bad about wanting to dress up as Mario for a Halloween party (im a girl and im making my own costume) but your video made me feel better because yeah i can do it because I want to. Thank you for making me realize that :)
Bill your the best! I'm new to cosplay and you inspired me to be a prop and costume builder much love to the Doran clan thank you for all you do.
I've worked in the entertainment industry as a professional costume, prop & puppet maker. I've also cosplayed. LOVED this perspective. Cosplay is a joyous activity that fosters creativity and passion. I applaud it in all shapes and forms. Thanks, Bill! Subscribed.
Very well said, thanks so much for making this video and putting this message out there!
I hold a workshop called "So You Want to Create a Character". My main focus is to help people who aren't sure how to begin developing a new character, but I usually wrap up with a short discourse on costuming. Like you, I detest the attitude that certain body types can't portray certain characters/costumes. However, I will warn them that cruel people say nasty things. I have found that the best way to deal is with a well-made, flattering and well-fitting interpretation of your character's garb. "Cosplay is about living your passion and expressing your creativity. Dress as your heart and your passion guide you." I tell them, " Hone your skills. Learn your body type and the tailoring tricks that look good on you. If your costume fits and flatters, you will walk tall and proud--and NOTHING looks better than that!"
Agreed with everything you just said. I actually have a story about something very similar to this. I recently came back from MomoCon2014 (Awesome weekend) I wasn't there but the story was going around. During the Cosplay Competition there was a set of three judges and one of the cosplays was Sailor Mars. The first two judges thought it was amazing but the last judge said it was all wrong because she was black.
thats so wrong! so many hateful people
Thank you for making this video. I've wanted to cosplay for years but never been brave enough to do so because I know my race and body shape would be deemed inappropriate for the characters I want to create. Next year though I made plans to cosplay for the first time at PAX Aus 2014 :) this video is very reassuring! So thank you Bill.
Thank you for making this video....i'm getting ready for comic con in a few weeks and i'm not totally confident with my cosplay. It's only my third cosplay, and even though i've improved i'm still not nearly as good as others. This helped boost my confidence a little more though, so thank you!!!
I'm in total agreement with everything you said. I'm a rookie cosplayer who does street clothes versions of costumes. Though I only have one complete one and several either in planning or missing pieces.
I love that idea!
HEATHERRIDDLE What idea???
PurpleRanger " I'm a rookie cosplayer who does street clothes versions of costumes. " This one :)
Ah! Thanks. I'm planning out a new one right now.
THIS! You, sir, are amazing. And I personally thank you for being awesome enough to put this message out there. As someone who will be running a "love your body"/"any sized cosplay" panel at a local convention next year, you are truly inspiring. Thank you. ♥
Bill is a very genuine human being, as are all his talented costuming friends I have come to know the last 5 years. I count myself lucky to call him a friend and fellow geek. And I love that he used a quote I often say, "no one gets to tell me how to play make believe". Because that's what this is all about people.
This is so great! I wholeheartedly agree! I never feel more comfortable about myself than when I am in costume, really. Even though I'm kinda nervous about my current project for my upcoming con as Loki...I know that when I actually show up at the con all decked out, I'm going to be so happy and excited, and I'm going to have such a good time regardless of nerves :)
I'm getting ready to cosplay a character that is usually seen as a stuck skinny guy by most of my fandom, but I'm a full-figured gal. I was really nervous and scared to cosplay him, but this video really gave me confidence. Thank you
Thanks for posting this! I'm not overly talented in the ways of making my cosplay look as close to the source as possible, so I'm always a little self conscious about that. But your video made me feel more confident in my abilities! Thanks for posting this :)
You, sir, are a man that Gets It. As someone that staffs for a convention, and a cosplayer myself, all of the horseshit and flack that I get for what I decide the cosplay, or how I execute it (despite going to college for costume design), it's so incredibly refreshing to see someone that understands that cosplay should be fostered as a creative hobby, a way to profess our love for a fandom or series in a way we might not be able to with 2D art or written works. Four for you, Glenn Coco.
I am in absolute agreement with you. I have been an admirer of the genre for years. I haven't delved into actually doing it simply because I can't decide which character to do first. Thanks for all the advise. Please keep it coming. I've learned a lot from you and others that share your talents & hope to do the same in the future.
One of the best 'Cosplay Topic' video's I've seen in awhile. I'd love to see more of these in the future.
OK seriously this is by far the BEST video out in circulation about cosplay. You have gained a subscriber and fan. :)
This is cool! Really enyojed your videos so far, only watched like 5 of em tho.
I just got in to prop building, im a furniture carpenter who happends to work in a great shop, cnc, Mills, all kind Of saws, routers, also all kind Of materials, mdf, acrylics, aluminium and so on but i really dont know how to take advantage Of it yet.
I have just started my first prop build, an rpg from the game Titanfall, also working a cnc file for milling a axe from Diablo 3. There is so much details!!!
Thanks for the prop shop videos in particular!
Agree completely, what a great way of putting it. I have recently started getting into the cosplay world and looking to challenge my own creative skills in anyway possible and show of the results no matter what. Trying to get a grip of some of your prop making techniques in your videos, something i have never done before and its a great learning experience. Cant wait to show of the results.
I know this is an older video, but thank you. I recently gained about 30 lbs due to a variety of things (bad habits, mental and physical health, medication changes) and I'm also preparing a Battlestar Galactica cosplay for the 20th anniversary of the show. I've been so nervous to go to my local con as chubby Starbuck, and this video made me feel little better. I know it's going to be fine, but body image issues are a bitch.
THANK YOU! You have no idea how many times I've heard "you're not a proper cosplayer. You're only in it for the construction". Like I'm not intrigued by outfit and fandom/character equally, or I can't learn to love the show/game/whatever BECAUSE I'm making the outfit that caught my eye...
Excellently well said. There you go again, continuing to inspire me to delve further into Cosplay :). You're the best, Bill.
You are a gentleman and a scholar! Awesome attitude, and fun way to explore this issue!
My gf is cosplayer, she's watching every video you're uploading, and this vid in particular filled her with another dose of enthusiasm :)
I agree cosplaying is and for everyone. But as a novice to cosplay I discovered cosplaying as someone similar in shape as you (from your fandom) greatly satisfying. From a creators stand point. Great video!!
You go!!! I totally agree with you. Thanks for making this
I totally agree with you! I've been trying to work up the "bravery" to cosplay at a con for a couple years. Hopefully this year I'll finally do it. :)
Thank you for your great words of wisdom and best of all your support bud!
This changed my mindset entirely. You are extremely insightful, and I appreciate you sharing this with the world.
Spot on! Loved it! Well played, sir. Well played.
Well said, good sir! And a great all around attitude for life in general.
This topic reminds me of going to karaoke bars as a younger person before I had children. I had people who questioned why I would applaud someone who just went up and tortured our eardrums for 3 minutes, and my answer is simple - because singing in front of people is hard. Even if you have a decent voice, nerves are a problem, and putting yourself out there for criticism, particularly since you're going to be singing songs done by professionals so you're immediately being compared to the pros is extremely nerve wracking. Anyone willing to put their pride and dignity on the line and attempt to sing in front of a room largely filled with strangers needs to be congratulated for having that kind of bravery, no matter how much or little talent they were able to display.
And the same goes for cosplay. Putting on a costume draws all eyes, and no matter what that takes bravery. Adam Savage said something on a panel that's appropriate here - he said he loves to see all cosplay, and there is a lot of very amazing work done that he loves to see displayed, but he felt that the people who showed a lot of dedication were the crappy ones. It;s one thing to show up when you know your cosplay is perfect, but it takes a lot of bravery and dedication to strap on the cosplay that you know kinda sucks and wear it anyway. You're not going to be the belle of the ball, and that's ok, you're going to show your love of your fandom anyway.
MrsRCharlton Hold on. Adam Savage said that??! Can you send me the link of that video please?
I found Savage’s video and either your thoughts were not properly illustrated in writing or I took it completely wrong. But Adam Savage both supports the cosplay community and is 110% for anybody to be anybody. Your statement made me think that Savage was not okay with crappy cosplay builds when you said “crappy ones”, but now I realize you meant crappy people!
Bill, we don't have conventions and cosplay in my part of the world and there are some of us that would just love to do it so your comments are just one more step to getting up the courage!
This video is super awesome! A few years back I made a Tony the Tiger costume for Halloween (I always try to pick the most original ideas) and everyone loved it, even though I'm an overweight dude. Nothing should stop anyone from cosplaying, because as you mentioned, it's the best way to express fandom.
This is a great video that not enough people have seen. I've been wanting to start attending conventions and start cosplaying, but I've always been hesitant because of my morbid obesity. I was thinking of just settling and cosplaying as exclusively overweight characters, like Gluttony from Fullmetal Alchemist. But after seeing this, I realize how ridiculous I was being. So what if I'm not in shape? Giorno Giovanna is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, and I'm not gonna let my weight stop me from showing my appreciation for him and his series.
Thank you for the words of encouragement.
Great video, Bill. I agree with you 100%! Luckily in my area all the cosplayers are generally accepting and supportive of everyone. We get a few trouble makers but they don't stick around long. Again, great video.
Hey, Bill! THANK YOU So much from a beginning cosplayer! You totally articulated all my feelings about cosplay and gave me the boost to get going on my first big steampunk cosplay outfit. Smooch!
Thank you, this makes me feel a lot better about choosing any character I want, regardless of matching body type, gender, whatever. And I don't really make my own outfits, the few costumes I've done, I've just bought things and then kinda put something together. I really like to dress up, I just don't have the time or skills to make my own stuff from scratch. I'm always impressed by those with handmade super-awesome cosplays, wish I could do the same!
I'm still pretty new at cosplaying. I'm a heavier girl, so I don't have a lot of confidence. But I took the leap, and made an ok(I think, for my first ever attempt!) Thor costume. Once I put it on, I didn't care about being the wrong body type or gender...I was having fun, and the awesome comments I got from strangers was worth every agonizing minute of worry. And watching this just makes me smile! Thank you so much for inspiring confidence! To cosplay is to show your love of that character!
This video is awesome! The last convention I went to showed me an 80-something year old woman wearing a black robe, orange wig, and leopard-print cat ears. I had to give it to that woman, for completely breaking down any idea that she was "too old". How can anyone be "too old" to have fun? Growing old doesn't mean you have to grow up, and being the wrong color/shape/size/gender for a character doesn't mean you can't have fun pretending! Go forth and be awesome!
That makes me feel better about cosplaying, it really does. Thank you so much
Thank you for making this video. It really gave me the confidence to continue my work on a couple cosplays I've had in mind for a while. These being: Nilin from "Remember Me" and Booker DeWitt from "Bioshock Infinite".
Completely agree with the content of this video, as a 20 year old overweight dude my first time cosplaying earlier this year i went as misty and had a blast.
Well said Bill I go to cons to see other costumes period no matter shape size type so on its just pure enjoyment to see them all well said again!
Wow this is awesome! Thank you so much for making this. You said everything I've wanted to say and more! This is truly inspirational and I thank you again for making this
Awesome video Bill, everyone who either already cosplays or is even remotely considering it should watch this video.
Hey Bill, thanks to your segment on TMS i'm building my first costume this year for Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. It's an original design with Star Citizen in mind.
Thanks for this motivational video!
This is so brilliant! Thank you so much!!!!
Nailed it, Bill. Awesome!
This was inspiring. I'm always a closet cosplayer because im so self-conscious of not portraying the character correctly and being afraid of getting judged on it even if I did the best of my ability. Thanks to YOU!! I can now feel comfortable being any character i choose to be
Thank you so much for doing this video!
Hey thanx for making this video. I've been telling done of my friends for years they can do what they want when it comes to Cosplay.
This is fantastic. Thank you.
Dude, I agree with what you said! I especially enjoyed the part where you said that dressing up in cosplay is considered brave. Never thought of it that way, thanks Bill!
You. You're brilliant! Put into words what is a great idea. Really helped me get more comfortable with a cosplay I'm putting together (Neliel from Bleach) still nervous, but you're right!
Wonderfully said. Thank you!
Thank you for this video, Bill! It's all about having fun.
You're most welcome!
I have quite a few friends who feel or have felt like cosplay is no longer for them because others judge them or there is unfriendliness in the community. I myself feel that way from time to time, too. So this video serves as a great reminder that we shouldn't worry about what others might think or say.
Every cosplayer I have met is awesome and has a certain confidence that many people don't, and never will, have.
All of my feels
Thank you for posting this. Its really motivational for me
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!💯💯Know one’s damn BUSINESS!! Do you and what makes you happy,NOT them😘
This was amazing. So on point. Thank you for this :)
You sir have made me feel so much better and have restored my faith in people. ^_^
i agree with you here. the only thing that i have to say is about some cosplayers is if it is a revealing cosplay, and you don't fit it well. you CAN modify it to fit YOU you can still be that character! and it makes me happy to see people confident of themselves but. if your showing more than needed because something just doesn't fit right when it can be fixed, please fix it.
Thank you so much for saying this! I have wanted to cosplay this character for a long time now, but his hair is short and I find my face ugly. I know it's stupid but it's something I can't do anything about, but I think your video just gave me the courage to cosplay him! thank you again, I'm almost crying here.
I have been considering cosplay for a long time, but I have been very self conscience about it, for a majority of the reasons you Stated, so I kind of figured maybe it'd be best if I didn't... well.... You just made me realize that I CAN and SHOULD do it, because I deserve to. Sooo, decision made! I am doing it!! who knows? Maybe it will boost my self esteem. Thank you, so very much. I love people like you :)
I completely Agree with you on this! Well said!
Love this Video !! Great Points Made by you !!
you know what? Good for you for finally saying this, cause someone needed to. And i agree 100%
I couldn't put into words how I feel about cosplay. Thanks for hitting it right on. I'll be at Vidcon coming up in a couple days and I think I might be the only one fully cosplaying as Dovahkiin to promote the fan film we did. Thanks again for making this video.
I absolutely love this video and agree 100%, especially as a mixed race cosplayer, we get too much crap from people about not being the right color, or that I should limit my options to only black or mixed characters
This is extremely true! Thank you so much for making this. Every one SHOULD dress up as WHO ever they want and for what EVER reason :)
I will definitely share it :D
I just started cos-playing and I'm always worried that I'm gonna get criticized about what I wear and stuff. Thank you for posting this it makes me feel alot better
Great video Bill. Look forward to our interview with The Closet Geek podcast next week.
You sir......are amazing ! and thank you for this!
Excellent! I've been costuming since the late 1970s and your message is just as relevant now as it was then; even back "in the stone age" lol there were the "experts" decreeing what one could and could not wear.
I am new to cosplay. I am planning to cosplay Goddess Zelda from Legend of Zelda and I'm black. I got upset when I saw horrible people making all kinds of degrading comments towards black cosplayers especially one I love to follow on Facebook. I thought I would look out of place because I'm black but I love Zelda. I found this and I felt a little better. I realize I can cosplay whoever I want no matter what. You're an awesome person. :)
You are amazing!
Thank you so much for making this video, I wholeheartedly agree with you. As a fellow cosplayer, I only cosplay Deadpool and am quite a bit shorter than Deadpool and am, taking a quote from my friends a "stick insect" regarding my body type. Thank you again for making this video!
Thank you so so soooo much for making this.
My first public Cosplay was a Crossplay (cross dressing Cosplay FYI) and as an adult male this definitely caused quite a fuss; especially considering this had never been done before at this particular annual local event and people not expecting it.
The main reason I did it was because friends asked me to join them for a group Cosplay, to prove a point to the local community that there is nothing wrong with Crossplaying and that it is great fun (which it was =P ).
So kudos Bill for this video!
Thx Bill, you pretty much covered all I ever wanted to say concerning cosplaying in the critics among the community. I like your video.
The part about bravery brought tears to my eyes.
nicely said. I know cosplayers who moan about newcomers and 'non-genuine' cosplayers and take on this "i did it first, therefore it is dearest to me and no one else gets to enjoy it & everyone new is just following a trend" mentality. The way they go on about it - you'd think they're worried that others may be stealing their thunder. no one should be be denied the chance to express their creativity just because their interests and reasons to do it may differ from others.
You have made me so happy with this :) I agree with you!! Also Cosplay to me is a bonding experience!!! No matter what you know that person has the same interest as you so embrace it! ^_^
I do what makes me happy and is fun...I even tweak characters (their outfits) and make it my own and what I'm comfortable with
Been a comic and gaming fan since a young age and although I have never Cosplayed I take my hat of to all those people who get involved it is a visual spectacleof colour and creativity. I think its great to be able to emerge yourself in complete escapism get away from the troubles of the world for a while and completely submerge yourself in the moment with like minded people, Cosplay? might give it a go myself one day.
I think this is a fantastic way ti motivate people into cosplaying how they want to cosplay. I myself have just decided, after watching your video, to cosplay a male anime character when I am in fact female. I think your video gave me the confidence to give it a go! ^^
Ahahah! My first cosplay was a made-up character! And I indeed had fun both making the costume AND at the Con. It was a great way to get me into it.
Seriously! Just did Salt City Steamfest and there was this 80 year old couple who came with three different outfits. When I complimented them they said simply, "We both just love to sew!"
wow, you're so correct! I've been thinking for weeks now if I should cosplay a rather tiny character (I'm pretty tall myself) and after watching this my conclusion is that I will! Thanks a lot
This video is awesome. I hate hate hate how people make those kinds of criticisms about cosplayers, and even within the cosplay community.
Good points. All cosplay is about is having fun and having fun. That's all. No one should feel restricted from cosplaying.
you sir are brilliant! thank you for saying what we've all been saying for so very long !
You kinda made my day :D While some of my friends cosplay, they are only comfortable in convention setting, which is fine, but then they criticize when I dress that way in public. I don't cosplay everyday, or even every weekend but if I've worked hard on creating a outfit and finally got all the pieces together, then why shouldn't I show it off?? It almost feels like an insult when they won't be seen in public with me, but I guess that's when you start to see how people really are.
I loved your point of "Who are you to tell someone else how to play make-believe?" That's something that has always bugged me. I've never understood how someone enjoying their fandom in a different way from you in any way diminishes your own enjoyment. The negativity in general bothers me. We should be supportive of people who share our passions not putting them down for doing it "wrong". I respect cosplayers cos they are far braver than I am. I am far too self-conscious for it.
I'll be honest. I find the people with different body types and unique/less elaborate costumes to be the most interesting. If someone turns a 5 gallon bucket into a storm trooper helmet, color me entertained. Love this video. You nailed it!
This man is awesome!
