Kudos for featuring "Boxing Helena." ! It seemed to be part of a string of disturbing "body horror" films of the early-mid '90's: " Killing Zoe," "The Doom Generation," "7", "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", and to a degree "The Crying Game." All had the same bleak, industrial lighting and disturbing imagery. Solid vid.
I never see anyone mention Mysterious Skin with JGL. It is extremely well done, and I don’t know if I could ever watch it again. Man Bites Dog was a pretty disturbing movie that doesn't get mentioned much. Its portrayal of the socio/psychopathic main character is chilling. Not exactly a horror movie but scary when you think about people who are this way in the and worse real world. And it was one of the earlier movies I can think of that popularized the "found footage" style of filmmaking.
Thanks for recommending Miss Violence. Honestly gave me some of the strongest emotions I ever felt watching a movie. One that makes you say « awesome movie, I hated it » 😅 I’ll watch the Treatment sometime later
I had The Treatment on my list for awhile and after seeing your recent video I finally watched it tonight. Great dark thriller. Very impressed. Great recommendation! It's hard to find these types of dark neo-noir/detective/psychological thrillers in the vein of Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Antibodies, Girl with the D.T. etc. that aren't predictable or sloppy and poorly executed. And as you've mentioned, this one doesn't necessarily do anything totally special or revolutionary, but it's just very well done, balanced and tightly written. Thanks again Emma.

Boxing Helena was a milestone for me in the 90s . First I love Julian Sands, and Sherilyn Fenn was really popular at the time. It's a movie that always stayed in my mind and forged , with some other movies, my cinematic tastes, aesthetic. The movie that disturbed me the most and troubled me for a long time, and still now is Grim Love. It's based on a real story and knowing that it is just shocking and terribly sad too. I never hear of this one, sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that saw this. Keri Russell is very good in it. Did you see it Emma ? Thanks for another great video!
Interstingly, I saw two of these: Miss Violence and 3096 Days. While the second one didn't really stay with me, Miss Violence is still one of the most gut-wrenching films I've ever seen. Right from to start you know that something is very wrong with this family. I was even more devestated once I discovered it is based on a true story. I'll check out the other ones, they sound intersting. Thanks as always Emma :).
Of these, I've only seen Boxing Helena. It was definitely a product of its time, and honestly I found both hilariously funny at times and incredibly grating at others. But certainly an original piece of work. Sad fact that Julian Sands, the lead in that film has been missing for over a month now since he disappeared hiking in California. I've really loved his work and as the days go by it seems unlikely he may be found.

Holy crap. You are spot on with miss violence. Just finished it, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so disturbed by a movie since the war zone. And another movie I can’t quite think of, made in the 90s, that I recommend if you like disturbing, of course you may have seen it already. This one is sticky, I’m having a difficult time shaking it. Wow. So deeply disturbing but so we’ll made. The whole time watching it, it felt oppressive and imposing and toxic and questionable and claustrophobic…yikes. Thanks and no thanks for the recco. Lol-ish.
Boxing Helena received so much more hate than I think it ever deserved, it is disturbing, but a fascinating film. So much is in this one that it has taken decades to understand the subtleties. Thank you for your reviews of all of these films!
Hey Emma, Fact: In Boxing Helena, Sherilyn Fenn was a last minute fill in. Kim Basinger was actually assigned to the role and at the last minute, decided to opt out. The production company sued for an insane amount of money; so much that this situation in itself has been attached to the movie.
I saw Boxing Helena for the first time when I was 15 (41 now) and it was on HBO. I was not prepared but it did start my lifelong obsession with horror and disturbing movies.
Surprisingly, I’ve actually seen one of these, Boxing Helena. I worked at a video store about 20 years ago and would pick up random titles I’d never heard of before. I don’t remember much detail except that it was very strange.
Thanks for the list, Emma! I saw Miss Violence in the cinema when it first came out and I was not prepared for the total darkness of the story. I was with a friend, and I hade to leave with her before the end because she found it too hard to watch. I still think it was a good film, but I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't know the theme beforehand.
I haven't thought of Boxing Helena in ages! I can't handle Julian Sands being misunderstood or quirky in any other movie without getting really uncomfy to this day.
OMG !!!! Boxing Helena !!!! I saw this movie so long ago (when I was a teenager... I know!) and it really stuck with me for a long time. I've never seen it again since but I think I'll try to watch it again! (Thanks?!) for the memories! ahah
My sister has watched "Miss Violence", while it's been on my list for quite some time. We're both Greek, so it's always interesting to watch the work of "your people".
oh! I watched Boxing Helena so many years ago I forgot about it! Thanks for reminding me about it (kinda?) - now I remember how it gave me this claustrophobic, suffocating feeling... This one is disturbing, alright..
Always love your disturbing movies lists. I'd completely forgotten I'd watched Miss Violence (though I don't know how that's possible). Looking forward to checking the other ones out!
I have only seen Boxing Helena. I thought it was so different that I remember everything about it. I didn't LOVE it, but it left its mark. I watched on VHS in 95 - 96 and never saw it again. I will add the other ones to my 493 films to watch list. Thanks Em.
Thank you Emma for your continued suggestions of disturbing movies it's really appreciated. I own all of these movies except for Boxing Helena which I saw in the cinema on it's release. I have a few suggestions for you... Pig (by Adam Mason very rare and difficult to find) The Vomit Gore films. Black Metal Veins Orozco the Embalmer (hard to find) Cannibal (by Marian Dora) Voyage to Agatis (Marian Dora) Melencolie Der Engel (Marian Dora) There is a Secret in My Soup Thank you once again for your disturbing recommendations.
"Red, White, and Blue" - A love story, wrapped up in a kidnapping and STD transmission situation. It's absolutely THE most disturbing film I've ever endured. Something about how "this could have/really happen(ed)."
Fun fact: I inherited Boxing Helena along with a collection of videotapes when my father's best friend passed away, and my dad recommended I watch it. I still have the tape, but have never trusted my father's taste again.
Idk if you’ve ever mentioned the film “Trauma” in one of these videos, but holy effin eff, that movie stuck with me big time. I’ve seen so many disturbing movie lists with Salo & A Serbian Film on them and by this point I’m just like 🥱.. “Trauma” tho… omg. That opening scene was awful and then just got worse and worse. It will haunt my nightmares forever.
One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.
I have seen Boxing Helena, and even though it was a long time ago, I remember a lot of details really well. "I'm going to the club!" Paxton was always the best at playing assholes. So you're right, it's pretty memorable!
I remember being in the cinema for "Boxing Helena" and I was distracted by other audience members as they were being disruptive. During one pivotal part of the film, the pair calmed down and began to show signs of behaving. Until one of them just suddenly vomited. The remainder of the showings for the film were shut down for the rest of the day. People were disgusted and wanted the couple banned. The others were disappointed in receiving gift certificates from the cinema. 3096 Days.. I can recall reading all about that story. But never knew there was a film about it.
There is this one movie I watched that just really got to me and I *rarely* seen it mentioned. In fact I watch your channel regularly (only subscribed now, because your videos come up so frequently in my youtube algorithm *almost* every time you make a video, I thought I had already subscribed) and I don't think you've mentioned the film, but it's called "The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael." I watched it once... I think it was posted on youtube a while back, but I don't think it streams. You might have to find a copy on ebay or amazon, but it's another rare traumatically-disturbing film. I have bought a copy of "Boxing Helena" and it sits on my shelf. I just have big issues with a lot of body horror films, and from what I heard about the film, I just get this "Dead Ringers" vibe from it-- a movie I waited 25 years to watch, and when I finally did I was so traumatized I could watch another film or TV show with Jeremy Irons--and I have watched a lot of disturbing films (A Serbian Film, Salos, Funny Games--or in reality most Haneke films can be classified as such). "Dead Ringers" just really hit a nerve with me. BUT I am a HUGE Lynch fan --David and Jennifer--and I know that one day I will need to see this.
Thank you so much for this list!! Just recently watched The Treatment and Miss Violence (super super hard to find this movie btw), great recommendations!
Nonchalantly Psychotic!! Lollll … YES. that’s what, Boxing Helena feels like. The attitudes of the characters are so casual, that it’s bizarre. I loved this movie when it first came out, but I’m a David Lynch fan. The end was still a shock. I loved it! Thank you for the list! I haven’t seen 2 or 3, but despite your warnings - I’m sure I’ll check them out.
Miss Violence is one of the few films that i could never watch again. I genuinely dont even like thinking about it and shudder when i see the poster. Looking forward to giving The treatment a go. Thanks for the great recommendations as always.

Thank you finally somebody talks about movies that I like dark disturbing movies that will really suck a person please keep doing more like this
I saw Boxing Helena for the first time when I was 15 (41 now) and it was on HBO. I was not prepared but it did start my lifelong obsession with horror and disturbing movies.
Anything Yorgos Lanthimos makes me super disturbed 🫣 maybe you could do a video on him just like you did with Gaspar Noe 🙌
I just watched Miss Violence because of this list. I'm at a loss for words but am glad I watched it.
Surprisingly, I’ve actually seen one of these, Boxing Helena. I worked at a video store about 20 years ago and would pick up random titles I’d never heard of before. I don’t remember much detail except that it was very strange.
Haha yep that’s the one
Thanks for the list, Emma! I saw Miss Violence in the cinema when it first came out and I was not prepared for the total darkness of the story. I was with a friend, and I hade to leave with her before the end because she found it too hard to watch. I still think it was a good film, but I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't know the theme beforehand.
I went in completely blind… what a gut punch! I can only watch films like that alone
@@spookyastronauts Yes, a total gut punch! I should not have watched in the cinema. I´ve still haven't seen the full ending, though.
Adding The Treatment and Miss Violence to the list. Thanks Emma!
Good luck !
Oh boy, traumatic movies are my favourite! /s
Thank you for this lol
Love the list. I watched Boxing Helena. I quite liked it, but it’s really all over the place. Thanks again for all the good recommendations.
(Thanks?!) for the memories! ahah
“The cook, the thief, his wife and his lover” is an overlooked one that is pretty disturbing, but quite good!
I have a full video just on that movie! It inspired hereditary
My sister has watched "Miss Violence", while it's been on my list for quite some time. We're both Greek, so it's always interesting to watch the work of "your people".
You FINALLY mentioned The Treatment! Great film! I told you to watch it multiple times way back when I first discovered your content.
Thanks Em.
I was literally just thinking about watching a spooky astronauts video and look what popped up off my feed! Now that spooky
Just watched The Treatment, my God! That was a trip, thank you!
You’re welcome and I’m sorry haha
Thank you Emma for your continued suggestions of disturbing movies it's really appreciated.
I own all of these movies except for Boxing Helena which I saw in the cinema on it's release. I have a few suggestions for you...
Pig (by Adam Mason very rare and difficult to find)
The Vomit Gore films.
Black Metal Veins
Orozco the Embalmer (hard to find)
Cannibal (by Marian Dora)
Voyage to Agatis (Marian Dora)
Melencolie Der Engel (Marian Dora)
There is a Secret in My Soup
Thank you once again for your disturbing recommendations.
Omg first time I've seen anyone mention Boxing Helena!
Emma. You are amazing! I only saw one on your list so that's a high hit rate! Can't wait to be disturbed. Thank you thank you.
Yes I have a full video review on trauma.
Trauma was good, some of the kills were brutal
Happy Saturday ✨👼🏻💋💘🙏🏻👼🏿💜❤️🫶🏻🌈🌹🌹🌷🦋😎
One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.
Oh dang, I have seen one of these movies! I watched Boxing Helena years back. I have never forgotten that movie, it's haunted me for years 😂
I have seen Boxing Helena, and even though it was a long time ago, I remember a lot of details really well.
My God The Treatment is a hell of a movie. Now watched it. Thanks for the recommendation.
The Reflecting Skin is in this same line of movies. So sad and disturbing, leaves you feeling hopeless.
I loved Boxing Helena so much I special ordered it on VHS back when it came out.
With you all the way. Love your channel.
The Reflecting Skin is one of the most beautiful, most disturbing films I’ve ever seen.
Thank you so much Emma
Love the video and please recommend more films like this 😊😊😊
Thank you so much for this list!! Just recently watched The Treatment and Miss Violence (super super hard to find this movie btw), great recommendations!
Straight off the bat, I’ve seen the treatment. Heartbreaking what happened to the disabled boy 😮
You win. Haven't seen any of these.
I've been waiting for Boxing Helena to be mentioned around here! Saw it more than once back in the nineties. It has Art Garfunkel too!
Great list!!
Miss Violence is one of the few films that i could never watch again. I genuinely dont even like thinking about it and shudder when i see the poster. Looking forward to giving The treatment a go. Thanks for the great recommendations as always.
Thanks for that list! Haven't heard any of them except Boxing Helena. But thanks to you my favourite flick ever is Martyrs. WICKED!
🎥 The Treatment is incredible !
One of the most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen yet amazing storyline and acting
Love these lists, Emma! Thank you!
Thank you!
