It's not everybody who speaks so clearly as you do. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand people who "mumbles." At a Burger King in London, I encountered this problem, and was embarressed to have to ask the lady to repeat what she just had said as I ordered. She repeated and I still couldn't catch what she was saying. I did not ask her to speak more clearly because I felt that would have be considered rude. However, although I never understood her, I got my meal. If you were to say, "sorry, I can't understand what you are saying," that would be hurtful.
I completely understand, I’ve had similar experiences! But I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask someone to speak more loudly/slowly if you can’t understand. As long as you are polite, most people will be understanding 🙂
Have you tried the shadowing method? This is where you listen to a short audio clip and try to imitate the speaker’s pronunciation. You can try it out here: Speak English in 10 Minutes! (Shadowing Method) ruclips.net/video/GkyZOKknv1s/видео.html

Side-chips not side-fries 😁😁😁
You’re so right! As a British person I should definitely say chips, not fries 😂
