- Short vid of some grease I use against some cheaper made stuff.. nah I don't grease many rat traps but this stuff in my equipment last twice.. three times as long keeping me in the seat an less time maintenancing and replacing pins and bushings!
Exactly the case for 'not all greases are created equal'. Fun video, but you are comparing greases with different thickener technologies and base oil viscosities. The key is to make sure you are using the right grease for the right application. From there, there will be several choices based on what performance level you're looking for - just like every other lubricant application that exists.
What astm method is this?
You used Schaeffer 221 for the water test to beter fit your needs.the 238 is better in water.why did you change the grease type when you moved to water test?
Lubrication Engineers Grease is top of the line. Impact test are very impressive, but you should make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Do all of the greases have the same Moly content in them? What about besides Moly, how do the additives compare. Using the correct grease in the correct application is what is important.

I believe the same, schaeffer have a line of grease from heavy duty to medium duty. People need to understand that all grease have a place and a function without that info and knowledge you are making random choices. Good video thank for taking your time. One more thing the green grease is for accidental food contact there is no point comparing that grease to a heavy duty grease is no an apple to apple comparison.
I've done that water test literally 1000's of times with the 238 and it hasn't done that a single time. Ive seen that slap test with the 238 and it didn't splatter. Slap test is effected by amount of tackifier, the 221 is designed for high speed low shock application. It has very little tackifier in it. The 238 is designed for pins and bushings with heavy tackifier. As far as a blow torch, you say it'll push that carbon contamination through the bearing. How many times have you ever heard of someone taking a blow torch to their bearings then running the equipment. Additionally, I'm curious why you didn't do the blow torch on the 238. Smells like a bait and switch demo to me.

Warren Timber & Forestry Mulching He’s correct, the pound test is irrelevant to many grease application. A high tack, pound resistant grease is a terrible choice for a high speed wheel bearing, for example.
The greases have different intended applications.
Only saw red n tacky once. You know what would do nice on a splatter test? Water and corn starch

Any of the ones with less tackifier. The 221, the 274. 219 is a newer grease and wasn’t around when I made that comment 5 years ago. Many people use the 229 in trailer bearings although it has a bit more tack than the any of the ones I mentioned. Just don’t try the 238 in wheel bearings. The heavy tack will not work well in the high speed application.

Sat through this exact same demo with "certified labs" and there premalube. The stuff is cool, but if you grease like you're supposed to. Its unnecessarily expensive. You still must continue to flush grease with grease to remove dirt from between pins and bushings. In a machine that never seen the dirt this stuff would be great
Don't know about dirt but in our grinders and whole tree chippers it's awesome. We're still going to grease like we should but with this we can actually go all day without any squeaky pins.. I'll say it again we go ALL day!! Love it not hearing metal on metal contact right after lunch!
@@warrentimberforestrymulchi6331 I have zero experience with chippers. My experience is mainly in earth moving equipment. Backhoes, skid steers, bucket wheel trenchers. As well as concrete boom pumps. These machines have pins being bombarded with debris, that loves to grind pins and bushing. If left alone without flushing it out with more grease.

which grease would you recommend for an idler pulley on a serpentine belt that spins at very high rate... ? thank you very much.. i was told Mobil SHC 220 is great, but someone told me its to thick for pulleys that spin very fast?
Speed factor number can help you determine a variety of lubricant properties, which you can then utilize to select the proper lubricant. Among these properties would be the viscosity of the oil and the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) grade of the grease for the application. You need to search it out and check the specs of grease. Slamming a grease on a bolt wont tell you sh*t. The temp, the use, the speed, sealed, open to elements, the factors go on and on and on... There is literally a grease for everything.
The grease he put in this video is for applications where parts get a hammering action, it sounds like you need bearing grease (Lucas extra heavy duty wheel bearing grease would be overkill but in a good way, same cost as any other grease out there) some people say using moly grease in bearings doesn’t let the bearings roll but instead slide on the grease (called skidding)
The Schaeffers 219 would hold up better in this test, and would probably be the best price!
For that you want a high temp/high speed grease with an NLGI #2 rating. I would recommend the Redline CV-2 grease, or Triaxx Atlas 600 grease. Make sure you clean out any previous grease first though. There are other popular greases out there that would work such as Valvoline, Lucas, Mobil-1 but I don't recommend those because of constant issues with separation. The previous two that I mentioned don't have those issues.

Certified Labs Premalube (looks like the same thing) is what we use at work in trailers that get abused and taken off-road on pipeline ROWs. It is good stuff. It stays in the hub and doesn’t sling out like other greases.

The grease soap or thickener doesn’t mean you are lubricating anything.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This test is almost entirely pointless. There are very few scenarios where you are going to have an impact such as this on your grease. He called this test of his a "drop point" test, and when lucas didn't do well, he's like "it's even got drop point on it".
That's not at all what drop point means. Drop point is the temperature at which the grease will turn to liquid. You need to use the right grease for the right application, same with any product. This test is not what you would use this type of grease for.

High tack “pound resistant” greases aren’t well suited for wheel bearings.
They tend to channel away from the bearing race.

I know this is old but I found it while searching for the best tacky grease for high speed RC car diffs. 40,000 rpm or so ring and pinion gears. I need a super tacky grease. I called certified but couldn’t reach them. What could I use? This is in a sealed case but you can’t use an oil.

I learned from old books from the time of steam locomotives and steamships that the best lubricants are vegetable fats and animal fats. 🤓🤓🤓 They are far superior to mineral oil when used in mechanics! from my collection - this is a real 1975 "No.158 USSR Azov oil" blue-violet color based on natural components of castor oil and copper fluorocyate - this is a legendary military lubricant that is still stored and works, but it is no longer produced like this, and fake... 😩😩😩

I have found that Certified Labs Premalube EP grease is just like your Chemsearch grease in that it may cost $9.00 per tube but i only have to grease my machine about every 3 weeks so ends up being the cheapest grease you can buy cause you don't have to grease every day. If I could find the Chemsearch I would try it, but again the premalube I buy from Texas Timberjack in Cleveland, TX works the same way and won't slap out on the test you are doing, it STAYS in the pins forever. Another plus to this is you don't have all that excess grease evacuating the pins and making a giant mess like the cheap stuff does.
Same stuff, the company got bought out and the product is now called Premalube.

yea I am having issues finding the chemsearch grease you are using. even on their own website there is no way to buy it or even look for distributors. it would help to let people know how it is you obtained "the best grease you ever used" either a link in your description, or the store in your area where you got it from.

Definitely! My salesmen just happen to both come by my shop that day and that's all I had on hand. Amsoil actually sent me some grease to try in a head to head next go around, I've heard some good stuff about them as well just not puttem to the test yet!

What's the base oil viscosity grade? It seems everywhere I look most greases are designed with light oils (Lucas Red and Tacky Base oil is around 130 IIRC, which is totally unsuitable from basic tribological principles, for slow moving, highly loaded components). I'm looking for a grease with NLGI 0 consistency but base oil viscosity in the ISO VG 680 to 1500 range and extreme pressure additives and have found it extremely difficult to get actual, quantitative technical information on most products sold online.
if its highly loaded, you should be using nlgl 4 or 5+
Thanks for answering, but that is the exact opposite of what I need. I should have mentioned this is for lubricating slow moving, highly loaded gears in a vintage piece of equipment and calculations show that I need a lubricant with ISO viscosity between 680 and 1500, fluid enough to be pumped onto the gears yet stiff enough top prevent seepage, hence the grease matrix. NLGI grade has NOTHING to do with Base Oil Viscosity, these are two totally different concepts. Mobilith SHC-007 is close, but given that the components have a lot of play because of their age and general tolerances of the era (this thing is over 100 years old), I am looking for something heavier, possibly similar to Mobil OGL-009 (NLGI 0-00, ISO VG 1500) but I don't want to be dependent on brands and am looking for all alternatives at this point.
why are you using grease, when you need something that's more of a gear oil?

I'm no salesman and definitely not biase considering I use Shaffer oil and hydraulic in everything I own but the test are for real no bait and switch as you say they've just got a better grease, works just the same with your grease I've gotta grease twice as much but definitely is a better grease in the cheap stuff hands down
As for the heat test, if you'd run equipment long enough you'd know when you wrap a drum with wire you can easily burn/ boil out your grease leaving the inside of your bearing looking like crayon with the cheaper stuff, not the case with with this grease in real life use!

I have to grease twice as often with your grease (Shaffers), even more so with a cheaper grease like Lucas..
Your not the first Shaffers salesman to want to test, and we've done just that on a bearing machine, Shaffers bearing machine actually and your grease came in far second lol
So when I say I've done all the testing I need to see I have until Shaffers comes up with a better tackifier..
Warren Timber & Forestry Mulching when someone says something like this I have to look for the reason the product performed differently in your equipment than it has in millions of other pieces of equipment for the last 40 plus years. Two things come up more often than any other reason. 1. It wasn’t the right grease for the application. 2. It wasn’t applied correctly in the equipment. The 238 is specifically designed for pins and bushings. If your talking bearings it may be the reason you didn’t have a good experience. The grease is perfectly engineered for the specific application. The other thing that pops out in your post is having to grease twice a day. If it were the wrong grease for the application then it would have bled out which prompts most people to rehearse. Now the bearing is over greased which perpetuates the problem and leads to premature failure. The individual walks away with ill feelings toward the product.
Definitely no ill feelings towards the product and FYI your 238 (thinner tackifier and more Molly) is more for your bearings and your 221(thicker tackifier with less Molly) for your pins and bushings according to you Schaeffer's techs..
Your miss understanding me when I say with your grease or cheaper greases I would have to grease daily, with chemsearch Grease my tigercats are going three times that!
I know your books and literature is telling you it should be the best but I'm saying as good as a grease it is they could do better when actually putting these greases in real life situations daily! As I have your oils witch even though twice the price I feel are worth the added life!
@@warrentimberforestrymulchi6331 I'm not trying to argue just curious and want to make sure I read that correctly they recommended 221 for pins and 238 for bearings instead of the other way around? I had 238/271 recommended for pins and bushings I don't run anything in bearings as everything is oil bath on my end. Just curious and want to make sure I read that right.
