  • This is the full interview with Jess and Mike Houlston about their son, Teddy, who became in the UK's youngest organ donor in 2014.
Jess learned she was pregnant with twins at her 8-week exam, only to find out one of the twins suffered from a serious and fatal birth defect at her 12-week exam. The baby had anencephaly, a condition that prevents development of the brain and skull.
With the help of a team of doctors and the transplant team standing by, the twins were born in Cardiff on April 22, 2014.
The family were able to enjoy only about 100 minutes with Teddy, but say they were blessed to have had that time with him. Three minutes after he died, the transplant team were able to retrieve Teddy’s kidneys, which were only 3.8 cm, and his heart valves. His kidneys saved the life of a man with renal failure and his parents have exchanged letters with the donor recipients, and say they are so proud of their little boy.
