I exclusively ate Skinny Hank for one month straight, and I loss all my weight! I'm like a massless photon traveling the void and never aging! Thanks Skinny Hank!
I ate skinny hank for 20 years and now i am made of antimatter, i dont know how i am wroting this message though, but i only stopped eating it because i dont want to become a ball of pure energy.
I ate only skinny Hank for 40 years and now am a 7 dimensional being capable of interdimensional travel and I lost 800% of my body mass. Thanks skinny Hank
I'm not a native English speaker, so watching Scishow videos always makes me feel smarter AND learn some new English word that I end up being obsessed about This video's word is: *ROTUND*
Crunchy Oats The gross meaning is similar, but the shades of meaning are different. Roly-poly implies something cute, cuddly, playful (like a fat little puppy!), generally more positive. Rotund is a more serious, solid, mature feel, with a bit more negative connotations.
norm speed would be healtyer btw. started the day whit 2 bumbs of coce. its an adhd med more than a drug. lame. now cup of coffee and that shitty cancer roll.
exactly. then they grow up with these horrible food habits and dont unlearn them because they never fully realize rhat cooking all foods with butter and white noodles in pasta is making u gain weight. and i completely understand as someone who grew up in a home where we eat junkfood and pasta all day everyday. tbh.
+Dawn Ambrose Any food can make you fat if you intake more food than you need. As Hank said, it's calories in vs calories out. You could eat ramen and only ramen for weeks and as long as your calorie intake is less than your outtake, you will lose weight.
+Maria Osorio Actually, there are studies now saying that calories in vs calories out doesn't necessarily make you thinner. It is WHAT you eat that can determine your weight. Vegans or people who end up choosing to eat plant based, whole food diets regardless of the animals and the environment, can eat more calories while burning less through exercise.
+Robert Bones even people that do cocaine get that permanent puffy fat coke face. it makes your head looks disproportionate to your body. it's horrible.
He does look goofy with facial hair, some people just can't pull off a beard or mustache. I'm the polar opposite, I look good with a beard and look weird and babyfaced without the beard
My mom was 36 I think, but the mother's age doesn't ultimately decide your weight. It's mostly about your decisions and self-discipline when it comes to your weight.
As for why older moms might produce obese offspring, it could be as simple as playing. Older parents just don't have the same engery or drive to get up and run around and play tag and participate in the fun with the child. I have two older twin sisters who were much thinner than me growing up. Four years apart, and I was this chubby one growing up. Notably, my sisters had baby books and photo albums and dance classes and sports teams and outings and pool parties, but when it was time to raise me, I was given a book and told to be quiet or play video games. Whenever I asked if I could do track or if my mom would take karate lessons with me, there was a put upon sigh and some reason to say no. And usually that reason was, "Sweetie, no, I'm just too tired." Being the age she was when she had me now, yeah, I totally believe it. I'm super tired, and I'm not raising any little monsters.
@@fengliu975 yes mostly because they r less leaning towards western, frozen and fast food...traditional food is still a trend there....but yeah we can see those changes in the upcoming generation.
For every 5 years it's 14% more likely?! So I had a 42% chance to turn out this way. Thanks for having me when you were 32 MOM. If that is your real name.
***** Well obviously it's no one else's fault. This comment was meant to be humerus, and I'm never gong to get anywhere with my problem if I just play the blame game.
This past year I lost forty pounds. All I did was cleave the amount of saturated fats I was eating by two thirds & stopped drinking beverages with corn syrup in them. I'm currently 165 lbs. Now, if I could actually force myself to actually like exercise, I might actually feel better.
Also people are eating more meat, more processed food, more calorific food, we have more effective modes of transport (less walking), and the internet (can sit on our asses instead of getting up and finding something to do). There isn't just one reason humanity's getting fatter - there are so many different variables!
Also, instead of slaving at a factory 7 hours, and getting plenty of exercise, we're slaving at a desk 12 hours, and getting no exercise. I think I should start a business making people pay to do manuel labour.
Basically to lose weight we need to go back to a time when every day was a struggle to survive. Look at gang territory. There is a reason only the bosses are fat and the low-tier gang bangers are all ripped af.
Actually, the low tier gang bangers were pretty skinny too, like to the bone, because they were malnourished. Also they had a high mortality rate. And have you seen the gangstars of today?
Sorry, I was unable to grasp your advanced sarcasm, alas, I cannot distinguish sarcasm from sincerity. So your point is that the average joe will never be ripped unless we return to feudalism. Right?
Also, because we have A/C. It's too hot to go outside (at least in south central Texas), so we just find activities to do inside which generally include sitting and eat.
I live in Georgia because my stepdad is in the Navy and got transferred here. The south has some of the worst food that I've ever had. It honestly has the worst of everything. Food, people, weather...
I was going to send this to my mom, because she's overweight despite eating well & exercising & she harbours a lot of guilt about it... but somewhere around the 8 minute mark I decided that wasn't a great idea.
2 + 2 = 4. either your mom is breaking the laws of the universe or one of those 2's is a 4 or both are 3's which is why she's getting a 6 as a result. i'd go with the same one her doctor probably would, the second. she should as well.
***** as long as she isn't having any unusual symptoms, it's probably just something she's doing and not aware of. if there are such symptoms, fixing those has priority, except in cases in which they're caused by the weight. it's simple; not easy by any means, but simple. Your mom shouldn't waste energy and end up frustrating herself thinking "i'm doing everything right but i'm still failing", instead she should just try and figure out where those extra bits are coming from or if she has something else factoring in and focus her efforts on that. from personal experience i can tell you that's the only thing that gets the job done.
Hank didn't really mention genetics or hypothyroidism. Some people can eat extremely healthy, exercise when not at work, eating, or sleeping, and still not lose weight or be a normal weight. I agree with IvaNiftyChannel. Is your mother stressed? Does she drink enough water? Is she always feeling depressed or angry? I think it might be worth it to go see a dietitian for counseling for a couple sessions.
Player Review my diet tips for everyone but me: marinade your red meat in lots of high fructose corn syrup, then cook it. And that's all you eat for your meals but for dessert you eat one whole box of twinkies every day.
living in sydney i literally think everyone here is fit af, and just walk around tanned with a six pack, i think culture has a huge part to play in motivation to stay healthy
Why did it happen so fast? Did you know that when the obesity epidemic began in 1977, it was the same year that the Food Pyramid (with loads of carb) was introduced? Hmmm...
I thought it was funny when plastic came up on the screen when he mentioned the crap in chicken nuggets. There certainly doesn't seem to be much chicken in them.
My mom was skinny while she was pregnant with me, she also smoked cigarettes, pretty heavily too. She has a predisposition to high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. When I was born, I was the FATTEST baby she's ever seen. I looked like play-doh. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (Probably caused by all the smoking) when I was 7, I would be morbidly obese, like 400+ lbs.
@@briancolley9568 Would love to get one myself. Had enough antibiotics in my life that my biome is gonna be pretty limited these days, and yoghurt can only do so much.
I don't know.. Pickled chicken feet & pig knuckles.. Not to mention liver (i still don't think something that filters toxins from the body should be eaten!) calves brains & tripe should not be considered food!!!🤔😲🤢😨
Sooooo.... after watching the "where sci show's going" video today, I happened to see this and man do i love this informal but awesomely informative style. Would love a balance of this old way again!
+OurPeanutGallerie Exactly! I was thinking about it when watching this. I think they got a teleprompter so they just speak everything from written lines. This show is long but has lot of emotions and it is fun to watch too! Like it
I have a strong feeling the reason why a bigger person often chooses to get into relationships with other people who aren't skinny is the fact that fatphobia is so rampant in society and affects every part of a person's life, including the way other people view them.
1. going to sleep makes it easier for the metabolism to switch into ketosis which will cause the body to burn fat in your fat cells. 2. adipose tissue/fat cells will more likely release more fat to burn when it cold. 3. preprocessed sugars like fructose are absorb almost immediately into the blood stream and if not burned/used immediately is converted into fat. 4. if the mother is starving during pregnancy will make the fetus obesity ... see the Dutch Famine Study ... a classic epigenetic study 5. (thin oriented ) Fecal pills or probiotics can establish a thin metabolism 6. Eating healthy means a diet naturally rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates and low in processed foods.
Actually, Australian doctors figured this out a few years ago, and American doctors figured it out in the early 1900s, but seem to have forgotten it. Low Carb, High Fat, diets are the solution. We feel hungry when we digest too fast, and carbohydrates diets extremely fast, compared to fats, which digest the slowest. 100 years ago, the average American diet was roughly 50/50 carbs and fats, leaning towards fats, depending on the availability meat. Look at 50 years ago, when fats started to get attacked for making people fat, and carbs became the main source of calories for people, that is when the obesity problem started up. You don't even touch upon this at all. Macro nutrients are a major factor in how diet impacts us, even more so than even Calories to an extent. When major, sweeping changes to macro nutrients occur, is when long lasting impacts to the body occur.
Cheese, Eggs, Avocado, Bacon, Salami, Almond Milk, Ground Beef, Shrimp, Almonds, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans, Peanuts, Coconut Oil, Coffee, Tuna. That comprises about 90% of my diet. The rest are various fast food items I know are low/zero carb that I eat as treats or convenience. Funny thing is, the thing with the most sugar that I eat regularly are the nuts. :) Its not so hard to cut out sugar once you know what to look for while shopping.
Unsweetened Almond Milk, Silk brand Organic, 0.5g of Fiber per 8oz serving, zero sugar. For me, Carbs are the most dangerous of the macro nutrients, right alongside Transfats. The fewer in my diet, the better. I normally sit around 30-40g total carbs per day. If you limit the selection to prepared foods, and ignore methods like salting and roasting: Almond Milk, Cheese, Salami and Tuna are all considered prepared foods. They are all ready to eat as is, require no further preparation, and require multiple steps in the production process. Total carbs for each per serving, in order: 0.5g(serving 8oz), 0g(serving 1oz), 1g(serving 1oz), 0g(serving 6oz). Those are grams of Carbs. If considering only sugar, 0g, 0g, 1g, 0g. BBQ sauce is a bad example, as a great many homemade recipes for it call for sugar, brown sugar and/or molasses in their preparation, all of which are straight up sugar. Good BBQ Sauce will have a little sugar in it, for viscosity sake if nothing else; most traditional southwest and deep south versions are sweet, and thus, contain sugar. I agree, people need to get back to cooking, but there are low to zero cook methods to reduce sugar and carb intake. Most days I don't even turn on the stove, and yet can eat 2500-3000 Calories with ease, while staying under 40g total carbs. Baby steps at first, replace convenience with healthier convenience, and the results will be more sustainable.
LOL, no. Macronutrient ratio won't impact weight to that extent when calories are the same, nor is fat inherently more satiating. In actual studies of various broth solutions, fats actually tended by less satiating than carbohydrates when giving people ad libitium amounts. It also goes against the fact that the traditional Okinawan diet consists of 70-80% carbohydrates and yet obesity was rare, and life spans long - they're one of the longest lived people on earth. What changed dramatically since the 1900s was the amount of activity we do and our access to easily prepared foods making eating easier. Also, the low fat marketing of the 1980s never worked - people pushed low fat but people didn't decrease their actual fat intake. wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2012/09/more-thoughts-on-macronutrient-trends.html#more
Seneca Rapson Define "70-80% Carbohydrates" please. While from a macro nutrient stance, all Carbs are the same, from a general health example, this is far from truth. Complex carbohydrates vs. insoluble fiber vs. simple carbohydrates, it all makes a difference. If a person's diet is 80% sugar, 10% transfats, and 10% simple amino acids, it would still be 80% carbs, 10% fats and 10% protein, but that Quality of those nutrients would be extremely low. That study you cited about the Broths, what actual carbs vs. fats did they use in the broth? Did they track the sodium level? Was there anything else in the broth? How many calories were consumed vs. hours until the subject was hungry again? These are all missing elements that you didn't mention. Do you have a link that could be examined? You cannot simply cite a blanket solution, like the diet commonly observed in Okinawa, as a counter to a macro-nutrient shift intended to combat a macro-nutrient based problem.
Lukemage First, the study: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15708771 Secondly, yes, I very much can cite the diet of one culture to show carbohydrate intake alone isn't the issue. You can't use one diet change (one that didn't even really happen) to say it was the cause because correlation isn't causation, but non-correlation is proof of non causation. Saying "well the carbs might be more complex, they aren't just simple sugars" is moving the goal posts. You blamed carbs, now you want to blame sugary carbs. www.researchgate.net/profile/Donald_Willcox/publication/259917380_Healthy_aging_diets_other_than_the_Mediterranean_A_Focus_on_the_Okinawan_Diet/links/0a85e539015156c1ff000000.pdf ^That sums up the dietary composition. There are differences in complexity in carbohydates in terms of fiber does is lower calorie. Once that is taken into account, it is the amount of calories take in versus the ones going out that matter for weight. You can't lose weight eating 3000 calories of primarily fat if you gain weight eating 2500 calories from primarily carbohydrates.
I was almost 300 pounds at 16, between depression, bad diet, and lack of exercise, and now at 23 I weigh only 178 pounds. I dropped a little over 100 pounds after getting away from a bad childhood environment and being able to fight off my depression/anxiety, and since then my whole body just /feels/ different. Feels better, and healthier even with some underlying issues remaining. Im by no means perfectly skinny, but I'm very glad that I was able to pull myself out of that lifestyle before I could call myself obese. I'm happy that I chose to love myself and fight for myself, instead of giving in to that despair and hopelessness. I know its hard though; for a lot of people it seems so far out of reach.
Now I'm curious about the fecal transplant. Honestly though, I'm one of those that had trouble sleeping, gained weight partly from that, had more trouble sleeping, gained more weight... I finally had surgery to repair my breathing issues and am now slowly going down to a more healthy weight. However this video makes me wonder about the health of my gut bacteria, just in general.
I too am a lifelong insomniac, and I noticed that if I can't sleep, I get hungry, and start to snack. Obviously if I'm asleep my body just kind of deals with it until morning.
Couldn’t agree more! We still need to learn a lot about obesity! My 2 daughters are 2 years apart, they get fed the same (mostly fresh cooked food) yet they are basically a science experiment. Why? Because the 10 year old has been obese since she was 7. Doesn’t matter what we do, she enjoys dancing and is an active kid, she likes healthy food as much as unhealthy food and it doesn’t matter if she eats less or more - she doesn’t loose weight. We aren’t putting her on a diet (my psychology and nutrition background helps) but still try to teach her the science behind everything. But my 8 year old has always been slightly underweight. She gained a little bit during lockdown because she couldn’t do her regular sport activities but she’s still on the edge of being underweight. We even struggled often because she lost weight everytime she was sick and couldn’t gain it back. The one difference which influenced their bodies? My thyroid. I was gaining weight during the first pregnancy and had to take thyroid medications because of hypothyroidism. After the pregnancy the doctor made multiple mistakes: first, he didn’t tell me I had Hashimoto‘s which is an autoimmune disorder. The he told me to stop taking my medication. He said I would be okay now without it and don’t need it, which isn’t true. You need the thyroid medication to stop the thyroid’s function. That way it doesn’t get attacked by the immune system. During my second pregnancy I had a big Hashimoto’s flare, my thyroid got attacked a lot, the sono showed a lot of changes after the pregnancy. I lost a lot of weight, basically everything I gained during the first pregnancy. And no, I didn’t eat much different. My Hashimoto’s is still not under control, my auto-antibodies are sky high and the thyroid levels aren’t controlled either. Everything just because the doctor didn’t bother to look up what my diagnosis was. It contributed to the development of my other autoimmune disorder called relapsing polychondritis which can be lethal. Not fun.
Since its 2020. I can tell you for a fact that majority of weight gain comes from over eating. Second place cause is poor food choices. And third place is lack of exercise/ muscle mass. You can't sleep your way thin. You can run marathons to get thin. You can't eat 3,000 calories of broccoli to get thin. The only way to lose weight is EAT LESS. This is true for pets too. Step 1. Eat less. Fast for 12 to 16 hours a day forever. Step 2. Eat better when you do eat. A.Less sugar. B.less animal fat and butter. Step 3. Stop over doing cardio and lift weights. Following these 3 guides WILL garunte weightloss. It worked for my boyfriend and I after we tried 3 different diets that failed.
Its pretty much a combination of what we eat (meat, veggies, junk food), how much we eat and how our body handles it (metabolism, exercise). I've cut my food intake in half, have replaced a lot of the junk with vegetables and fruit, and am going to the gym regularly but the results are coming slowly and I am still obese, although I'm on the verge between obesity and overweight. Meanwhile my friend for the longest time ate like shit (lots of mcdonalds, kfc, taco bell, chipotle, loved covering his food in oil) and exercised less than I did at my worst (none) and was underweight. He's started exercising and taking lots of protein shakes while cutting down on fast food and he's getting muscle build up fast.
It's probably because of his metabolism or muscle type. If you have slow twitch muscle, your body tends to use oils as energy, but fast twitch muscle tends to burn fat.
Dat ÑÅMRØÑ WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!! What in the piss are you talking about???? (MUSCLE TWITCH)????? Please send a link referring to this phenomenon "Muscle Twitch Rate" referring to obesity.
***** Actually he and I lived together in an apartment for three years and I can say without a shadow of a doubt he ate way more food than I did. Microwave meals, doritos, potato chips, soda and energy drinks, fast food burgers and tacos and pizza.
***** That's not 100% either, and I say this from the framework of someone who gained weight *after* going on replacement for being hypothyroid. Yes, hypo, 50 pounds in 6 months on the same caloric intake as before (I tracked it, item by item consumed). After cutting down 600 calories further a few years later, I lost practically nothing, about 2 pounds over 2 months eating around measured BMR (IE breath into a mask for a while). Cut down another 200 after that on a per-day basis, and suddenly I've lost over 30 pounds in 6 months. But, weight loss from that difference in daily intake shouldn't be anywhere near 30 pounds, it's not even a pound per week in calorie theory if you're talking the 200 less/day...it's not even half a pound per week. If it's just a matter of consumption and burning, something (s) can do a hell of a lot to the burning side of that equation, and our research on the matter sucks to sift through partially because the incentives for it are screwed to hell. As for consumption, it's easier to get a reasonably accurate caloric intake measurement. Once you're used to it, it's the easier part because it depends on not doing something (you simply don't eat more than your allotment), as opposed to making sure you do any number of things that people tell you will or won't work using some legit research strewn in with loads of bullcrap. 2000 calories isn't that hard to understand or track.
Vanessa Leighton actually two weeks after I posted that comment I decided to give the no carb diet a try, and after only a month of cutting my carb intake to practically nil I lost over 46 pounds.
8:38 maybe because as you get older you become more financially stable due to making better decisions with money and earning more, this in turn leads to more food.. this can be combined with the reason that the older generations tend to cook better tasting meals as premade ready to heat up food wasnt as widespread back in the day as it is now. i'm just speculating xD
The average American consume more calories than prior, moves less than before and slept deprivation is common for a vast majority of people... If everyone are moving less and eating more, you should not be surprised we gained weight as a species. Recent studies proved : * You will gain weight in a calorie surplus. * You will lose weight on a calorie deficit... As long as your protein & fibre intakes are suffisant [so, one diet isn't the solution]. To illustrate my point, in a large study, one control group lost weight while being fed with juice, refined sugar, bread and pasta... but, they slept 8h per day, while consuming protein and fibers in significant amount. Edit : Why RUclips won't allow links to be posted?
I recently lost one of my legs and was talking to my physiotherapist about the statistics of people who lose limbs. she said that in her working life the number of people losing limbs, especially legs, from weight-related problems has skyrocketed and I find it kind of fascinating that no one talks about that being an issue that comes from obesity. when she first started it was mainly elderly people and people in car accidents, but now its mostly diabetics resulting from being overweight, at least in our area.
I just calculated my BMI, and I'm 0.7 overweight. I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs. also. It sucks having all this access to fast-food, yet it's mostly my fault for not having the willpower to stop eating out. Hopefully taking up skateboarding and starting to jump on my trampoline again for a couple hours a day can help, at least a little bit, to get under that 25 BMI.
Honestly, forget about skateboarding and trampoline jumping. They're both quite inefficient at getting your heart rape up to anywhere near 75% of your maximum heart rate (usually around 140-160 bpm) Cardio exercises like running (jogging), jump rope exercises, boxing etc. are the best ways to burn a lot of calories. If you really hate cardio, you don't even have to do it. Instead of burning 600 calories by exercising, just eat 600 fewer calories in a day, Instead of eating for example 2300 calories a day and burning 600 through exercise, just eat 1700 to begin with. Judging by your height and weight, you need about 2300 calories a day to maintain your current weight. To lose 1lbs per week, you'd need to eat around 1700-1800 calories a day. To lose 2lbs per week, you'd need to eat around 1300-1400 calories a day. If you decide to go on a diet, don't forget to do strength training (lifting weights, crunches, push ups, sit ups) to not lose too much muscle during your weight loss. Losing weight will almost always burn some muscle too (75% fat, 25% muscle), but if you do strength training while losing weight you can make your body more efficient at burning fat instead of muscle (95% fat, 5% muscle). You can even build muscle during weight loss if you're new to exercising (losing 100% fat and gaining smaller amounts of muscle). This is called newbie gains and they usually happen to people that haven't been working out for long periods of time (more than 6 months). Just remember one thing, don't starve yourself. Starving will burn muscle like crazy while burning small amounts of fat, it's not worth it. Don't eat junk food and eat healthy meals and exercise (cardio is not necessary, strength training is). Good luck.
How about that the government food pyramid, created in the 60s, and 70s, isnt backed by science. The foundation of a diet isnt supposed to be carbohydrates, and starches.
Pravvus Here in Canada, the food guide was mostly to promote foods produced by certain sectors of the agricultural community for commercial reasons, not for health reasons.
Well, yes, but I didn't mean it like that lol. More like fat people and skinny people usually have problems correctly estimating the actual amount of calories they eat.
I'm fat. I dont eat alot. I eat about the amount that I should. My brother is skinny. he eats alot. he eats more than he should. only difference is, I dont move enough. he doesnt either, but he doesnt have to. because his metabolism doesnt work the same as mine does. people have different kinds of metabolisms, and thats not a bad thing. I would survive for longer in the wild than he would. but we are not in the wild, we are in a civilization where people like me have to try a bit harder than others to become and stay fit. its not just the food we eat. there are alot of factors.
Ozy mandias No. You eat a lot. Most fat people highly underestimate the amount of food they eat. And skinny people over-estimate the amount of food they eat. My sister also thinks she eats a lot - she does not. She nibbles on things once in a while and never finishes her dinner. Once you realise how much calories you are actually, objectively eating, you can plan for weight loss accordingly. Because I assure you, you are eating a LOT more than you think. A regular person should only be eating 1200-1400 calories a day. Oh, and metabolism has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's calories in, calories out. Also, the fat ones always get targeted first by predators since they are slower. Fat animals do not exist in the wild.
***** they do not exist because its alot harder to get food in the wild and they get alot more exercise. I'm fairly aware how much my brother and I and many others eat, I eat the same or a lesser amount than most. it often surprise me how much some people eat and how thin they are. my brother and I once tested that out and ate exactly the same for a week while doing about the same exercise (not alot, we are both lazy). he lost 7kg and my weight stayed the same. and I hope you dont seriously think its just calories in and calories out. its alot more complicated than that.
Fortunately, my mother gave birth to me at the age of 20, and my father is quite the skinny guy, or at least he was when he sired me. I, myself, have lost nearly 50 lbs from my heaviest a couple of years ago. Better diet and exercise really does work.
also one other reason is our metabolism. Back centuries ago it was much harder to get food so our bodies acclimated to it by developing a lower metabolism and now days we can have all the food we ever need and most of our metabolisms are still low therefore we are fat fucks
10:25 …why not just eat more probiotic foods, probiotic supplements, and fermented foods? And more healthy, complex foods (complex as in complex molecular structures)? Those have been proven to help support gut bacteria, and help provide more of an eclectic crowd of gut bacteria, from what I’ve read. Then again, ask your doctor if you think probiotic supplements will help, doctor knows best.
Can't be that bad. In Denmark 51% of adult is technically overweight, but have been in the top 3 of the happiest country's in the world for many years and have great Healthcare, pay, education. Plus we drink a lot of alcohol. Coincidence? I think not🇩🇰😀
yes Tumblur this answers your question, obesity is not beautiful it's a fucking health problem and go get yourself fixed. I hope for the best because it sucks to suffer that kind of fate
Lord Event Horizon I think we can be both health conscious and body positive. There's a distinct line between round/chubby/curvy and morbidly, unhealthily obese, just like the line between slim/thin and malnourished. It's fine to not be a perticular size and be proud of what you are, but this mentality does not have to conflict with health. Sometimes body positivity helps larger people to lose weight, a lot of middle aged women who would benefit from exercise choose not to because they're embarrassed at their fat - and that won't help them
Sugar and carbohydrates are the real culprit. Processed manufactured foods are killing us. I've lost 15 pounds in the last 2 months on a near zero carb diet. I eat bacon, eggs, ground beef, butter, coconut oil, ghee, nuts, and yes, fried pork skins with guacamole.
A lot of the reason why we are great at getting fat is because in an evolution sense, the humans who could change as much food into fat as fast as possible survived. Historically, those ones would be the ones who could survive starvation, because they are always in starvation-survival mode, and so we are their descendants. So we are great at packing the pounds, as a strategy to not die from starvation.
It's not even overweight genes, it's overweight epigenetics. If the body that you were created out of (your mom's body) is used to being overweight, your body starts off being used to being overweight. It's like being born obese (on the inside. :P) and fighting an uphill battle to retrain your epigenetics to be used to being skinny.
Actually there was a study, I think "it's ok to be smart" channel talked about it, which showed genes do play a big role in our weight. Although the study targeted weight loose, fitness and strength/mussel building. Basically what they did, they took a number of people with approximately the same weight and fitness level and put all though carefully designed training regiment. Some people achieved expected results before target time, while some barely changed at all. So maybe there's no obese gen strictly speaking (although who knows, maybe there is, I wouldn't be surprised) there are clearly genes that prevent us from keeping slim figure and good fitness level without almost extreme discipline.
Being more active can help, but I've lost more weight sitting around doing nothing. I started running 2km's every day and over 4 months I weigh the same. And once during the Christmas holidays I played Minecraft every day all day for 3 weeks and lost 11kg's. Mostly because I forgot to eat. I'd reccomend it, but I think I ruined my metabolism, I maintain my weight on about 1000 calories per day and I'm 19. That's with running 2 km's per day as well. It's not too bad, sure I can't eat anything but I'm also not very hungry anyway.
The primary factor in actually causing the obesity epidemic is an increased intake in total calories. Multiple independent lines of evidence point in this direction. First of all - if we simply calculate the total amount of food being consumed by Americans we find that they are consuming 500 calories per day per person more than they did in 1970. A new study supports the notion that eating out is a significant contributor to caloric intake. The study finds: "The study determined that increased energy intake (+179 kcal/day) by children from 1977-2006 was associated with a major increase in calories eaten away from home (+255 kcal/day). The percentage of calories eaten away from home increased from 23.4% to 33.9% from 1977-2006." Chemicals and giving birth when you're older? Really?! I cannot believe that SciShow ACTUALLY said that exercise and diet have little to no effect on obesity... You're just encouraging americans to eat shitty food all the time and keep on saying "Its genetics, and chemicals" and "my mother gave birth to me when she was older than 21!"...
I wonder if you watched the whole video. Hank said eating right and exercising does work, but there are other reasons. They are just going IN DEPTH as scishow does. So, before you get mad, comprehension of what is said is important.
It's not only calorie intake/out, it is also the quality of the food. You could eat 4 apples for the calories in a candy bar and still get less sugar and more fiber. And less chemicals. I also agree with the other factors as well.
My concern is people blaming their weight on unchangeable factors like genes, upbringing etc because it gives them a free pass on just being more disciplined. Even if these factors have made the impact, being unchangeable means they're not worth worrying about then! So instead let's make lifestyle changes on what IS changeable; for the longterm, and for longterm benefit. I've never heard of someone radically changing their diet and committing to exercise and not --eventually-- seeing positive results, as long as they keep learning and improving. Not to mention the encyclopedia of reasons why regular exercise is crucial to the functioning of the human body. Health and fitness isn't just about losing fat and looking like Baywatch. It's also about, you know... health. And fitness.

+Dawn Ambrose Any food can make you fat if you intake more food than you need. As Hank said, it's calories in vs calories out. You could eat ramen and only ramen for weeks and as long as your calorie intake is less than your outtake, you will lose weight.
+Dawn Ambrose tell that to a vegan
+Dawn Ambrose Really any food is fine in moderation. You can't just eat nothing but lettuce all day to be healthy.

And usually that reason was, "Sweetie, no, I'm just too tired."
Being the age she was when she had me now, yeah, I totally believe it. I'm super tired, and I'm not raising any little monsters.

NINmann01 how tall are you!
I bet it is one of the most successful SciShow videos, I'd love to see a newer version with more up-to-date information.

I was going to send this to my mom, because she's overweight despite eating well & exercising & she harbours a lot of guilt about it... but somewhere around the 8 minute mark I decided that wasn't a great idea.
2 + 2 = 4. either your mom is breaking the laws of the universe or one of those 2's is a 4 or both are 3's which is why she's getting a 6 as a result. i'd go with the same one her doctor probably would, the second. she should as well.
Except you don't know my mom, & this video is all about weight being influenced by factors beyond diet and exercise.
Yes, she might have Hypothyroidism, you should tell your mother to check that too.

"Pseudo-intellectual", silly. The E before the U.
1. going to sleep makes it easier for the metabolism to switch into ketosis which will cause the body to burn fat in your fat cells.
2. adipose tissue/fat cells will more likely release more fat to burn when it cold.
3. preprocessed sugars like fructose are absorb almost immediately into the blood stream and if not burned/used immediately is converted into fat.
4. if the mother is starving during pregnancy will make the fetus obesity ... see the Dutch Famine Study ... a classic epigenetic study
5. (thin oriented ) Fecal pills or probiotics can establish a thin metabolism
Its not so hard to cut out sugar once you know what to look for while shopping.
Lukemage
First, the study: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15708771
Secondly, yes, I very much can cite the diet of one culture to show carbohydrate intake alone isn't the issue. You can't use one diet change (one that didn't even really happen) to say it was the cause because correlation isn't causation, but non-correlation is proof of non causation.
Saying "well the carbs might be more complex, they aren't just simple sugars" is moving the goal posts. You blamed carbs, now you want to blame sugary carbs.
www.researchgate.net/profile/Donald_Willcox/publication/259917380_Healthy_aging_diets_other_than_the_Mediterranean_A_Focus_on_the_Okinawan_Diet/links/0a85e539015156c1ff000000.pdf
^That sums up the dietary composition.
I’m pretty sure my mom did almost everything in the “your mom” category... thanks mom!
these remarks are hilarious! I'd like to see you do a newer version of this.

Not fun.
Try cutting out gluten. I know people laugh at gluten free stuff, but trust me it helps with autoimmune disorders.
Nice try hank, we all know you don't sleep.
Parenting also plays a factor I think. Many kids are raised with these bad habits and become the norm. I was :(
Its pretty much a combination of what we eat (meat, veggies, junk food), how much we eat and how our body handles it (metabolism, exercise).
Dat ÑÅMRØÑ
WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!
3:01 Me when I ask for cheese and someone hands me a pack of Kraft American singles.
This was published feb 2012. I wonder how it is now.
I thought the same!
...you have no idea how much people in the 70s *loved* microwavable tv meals, do you?
Whew! I can stop blaming myself for weighing 961 lbs.
The average American consume more calories than prior, moves less than before and slept deprivation is common for a vast majority of people...
If everyone are moving less and eating more, you should not be surprised we gained weight as a species.
Recent studies proved :
* You will gain weight in a calorie surplus.
Edit : Why RUclips won't allow links to be posted?
get more sleep? but... but I want to watch more SciShow.
just one more episode?
I'm fat
dxburner222 I'm skinny
i'm a weeb
dxburner222 same
don't do math, got it
+oldcowbb Ha, I just commented this (basically) too cx.
+oldcowbb Fuck, Done it already.
They're both quite inefficient at getting your heart rape up to anywhere near 75% of your maximum heart rate (usually around 140-160 bpm)
Cardio exercises like running (jogging), jump rope exercises, boxing etc. are the best ways to burn a lot of calories.
If you really hate cardio, you don't even have to do it. Instead of burning 600 calories by exercising, just eat 600 fewer calories in a day,
Instead of eating for example 2300 calories a day and burning 600 through exercise, just eat 1700 to begin with.
Good luck.
Read "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes.
Don't feel bad; I'm 5 ft., 9 in. tall and weigh about 305 lbs.
To be honest your skinny for that size,i seen 6 foot people at 250 lbs
Seriously BMI is bullshit (excuse me) 200lb at 6'2 isn't too much especially if you are strong. Muscle weighs a lot.
When you were talking about meth, I thought you said "So don't do math."
Well you don't have to do that either if you don't want to.
Math will fuck you up more
Thank you, RUclips Recommendations, for giving me a seven year old episode!
Don't get puffy feet! Do change to a multi grain tortllia, hot dog, cheese and a peanut lime pepper dressing with cheese or my car sesame seeds.
How about that the government food pyramid, created in the 60s, and 70s, isnt backed by science. The foundation of a diet isnt supposed to be carbohydrates, and starches.
Yeah I'm really questioning “We gave one group of kids a good diet and physical education“ Sounds like it wasn't so great after all.
Pravvus Here in Canada, the food guide was mostly to promote foods produced by certain sectors of the agricultural community for commercial reasons, not for health reasons.
I'm fat. I eat a lot. I eat more than I should. My sister is skinny, she eats little. Less than she should.See anything?
That you are at least a better person that most by not complaining that your sister is skinny.
00:00 it’s a little something I like to call...
*_bulimia_*
Fortunately, my mother gave birth to me at the age of 20, and my father is quite the skinny guy, or at least he was when he sired me. I, myself, have lost nearly 50 lbs from my heaviest a couple of years ago. Better diet and exercise really does work.
I miss these slower less formal scishow videos. Also funnier
also one other reason is our metabolism. Back centuries ago it was much harder to get food so our bodies acclimated to it by developing a lower metabolism and now days we can have all the food we ever need and most of our metabolisms are still low therefore we are fat fucks
I love the language
CrackyourskullBitch Your name is "CrackyourskullBitch"...
DON'T MENTION IT!
I know that I am.
I love these young hank videos with slightly more coy and inappropriate narratives.
So... Skinny Hank isn't peanut butter, its poop?!
Just eat mostly a plant based diet and barley meat if you do eat it... THAT SIMPLE :)
I don't know about the 'overweight genes' from parents… I think it'd be more the lifestyle the kids are raised in.
It isn't one or the other; genetic or lifestyle, both play a role. The issue is by no means black and white.
Well I guess parents who already have an overweight lifestyle will pass it on to their kids.
Or the culture.
The study finds:
"The study determined that increased energy intake (+179 kcal/day) by children from 1977-2006 was associated with a major increase in calories eaten away from home (+255 kcal/day). The percentage of calories eaten away from home increased from 23.4% to 33.9% from 1977-2006."
Chemicals and giving birth when you're older?
2:15 - By 2015?! Whaaat, that was yearsss ago... It's almost 2020 now. 😶
This video was made in 2012
@@sunburn4412 We know. Your point?
@@TheEarthRealm just wanted to clarify that this is not a recent video .
You forgot to mention how cheap calories are these days, relatively speaking.
Double the price of junk food, see if that makes any difference.
