Couldn't the big institutions just roll their shorts into much longer timeframes, and wait out the squeeze?
Or are they unable to roll due to shorts being over leveraged?

Bingo. Too over leveraged and if the bank knows better, they realize how big the squeeze is and that they may mot be able to cover

The banks have limits set for all borrowers. The financial risk would not be worth extending to them. The future is unknown there for limits are set.
