- A race day description of the Mesa marathon in my bid to run under 2:30 for the marathon aged 50 #running #marathontraining #mesa
You managed a really great time for such a tough race and you are definitely right on target to meet your goal!
I know 100% that you will get there :))))
Great effort! Doesn’t always go to plan, that’s for sure. On to the next one!
You’re 100% right on that, that’s for sure! :)
Onto the next one!!!
(Thanks for such a positive comment by the way!)
Looked like a brutal day, and you still did really well even though you weren't feeling 100%. I got tired walking to the grocery store today, so you are still my hero!
Ha ha! Thanks for that!! :)
Live to fight another day when you’re feeling 100%. Marathons are brutal at the best of times! Congrats on keeping the sub 3 record intact!
Yes! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing the honest re-cap! Impressive to hold on when you were feeling it at mile 10! (We’ve all been there). On to the next one!
That’s right!! On to the next one.
I ran that race also. The late start and the rain sucked. I got 4:07 and my goal was 3:55.
Do you have plans to make amends like I do??
Amazing. I ran in this race too. The last 10k was an absolute suffer-fest for me as well. Was running at sub 3 pace for about 18 miles and ended up running 3:09. I really think the cold, the rain, the huge downhill start and the delay at the start really made this a witch's brew of tough circumstances. I will definitely look back on this one fondly someday, but not today 😂
That’s still a good time. But I share your feelings. I had such high hopes for this one and I definitely need redemption. I never quite understood the reason for the delay at the start. At least our start arch didn’t collapse (it did in the half!)
(Thanks for subscribing! Appreciate it!!)
Thats a fabulous time at any age, you should be very proud of yourself.
Thank you! (This is why the running community is just the best!)
I ran Mesa on Saturday as well. I was ready to run a 3:15, but my hamstring was a little busted up. As soon as we started, I knew it wasn’t going to be a strong day and I was limping by mile 13. I managed to grind out 19 miles, but then I stepped off the course to avoid real damage.
It’s a frustrating feeling to put in all the right training and for your body to not show up to race day! I share your need for redemption!
I’m sorry to hear that. It’s such a long way that any little thing can have catastrophic impact. You did the sensible thing rather than suffer long term damage. I guess it’s what makes our sport so compelling.
I’m tempted to find another one in 8 weeks time. But I need to be able to walk properly first! :)
I had the exact same idea. The Revel Mt. Charleston Marathon in Las Vegas is in exactly 8 weeks. I’m going to rest a week and decide if I want to register.
hope you recover quickly! You’ve got the fitness. A few speed sessions and you’ll be even better!!
I ran the half and had a huge PR. It was such a wild start and miserable weather but I got comfortable really quick and got quicker each mile. I saw one of my teammates at the 4:55 mark of your video!
Good for you! You had the day I was hoping for!
(And I heard the starting arch collapsed didn’t it?! Wild!!). :)
Oh and feel free to share the video with your teammate! :)
@@global-runner Yea, it was collapsed before the delay and during the delay. Then we noticed it was rising and all of sudden we were off. No announcement or gun start, they just started sending runners. Most of us didn't have our watches on because they told us 30 minutes but actually sent us around 20ish minutes.
A similar thing happened at the start of the marathon. It got to 6:35 and no announcement. Then we were told 7am. Then there was a rumour in the crowd of 6:45 and then eventually we went about 6:50 but some dude just shouted “go!”
Quite comical but a great event notwithstanding!
Way to grind!! Those last 4 miles in the frigid rain took some willpower!! No doubt you’ll hit sub 2:40 on the next one!
I feel like Andie McDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral “is it raining, I hadn’t noticed”. :)
How was your run??
@@global-runner better than expected! Crossed the line in 2:52:49 so was very pleased. Had some pretty severe thigh cramps going into 22, but that miserable weather made me even more motivated to rip the bandaid off and power through the last miles
way to go!!!!! That’s exactly right. Just gotta get it done in those conditions. Sub 2:50 next?
@@global-runner that’s the plan! As soon as I can walk normally again 😂
Same issue here!!! Stupid downhill marathons. :)
First time viewer and enjoyed the video. I wish you had put your goal up near the beginning. Better storytelling, and for someone like me whose goal is to get 3:45 on March 10th, when the title says "failure" and then you dropped 2:43 I was, of course, thinking "failure?!?" 😂😂😂
Thanks for the comment! I put the goal up at the 15 second mark but I must not have made it prominent enough. I’ll definitely make it clearer next time. Thanks for the comment!
@@global-runner ok, sorry! Totally missed it.
That means I didn’t make it clear enough! It’s good feedback - thanks!
Very inspiring. Boston next and possibly 3:01
Why not 2:59? :)
@@global-runner my Boston PR is 3:06. That’s a huge ask on that course. Conditions have to be perfect.
Very true. It would be great to get a tailwind! (Or do what Paula Radcliffe would do and ignore your watch - you may surprise yourself!)
Thanks! It could definitely have been a lot worse…!
Your zone 3/4 setting is very strange. Well done though, great time, next time even better!
Yes the watch set it automatically in a really weird way. I manually corrected it and it seems much better.
congrats man ! 2h48 is amazing, your zone 4 (threshold) is so big compared to zone 3, did you put the value manually ?
Thank you!
The watch did it automatically. But someone else pointed that out and that has to be wrong. Zone 3 is a range of about 3 beats
Out of curiosity, why is your aerobic heart rate range set narrow, while your threshold range is wide?
The watch did that automatically. But it’s a great question. I don’t know why it did that and hadn’t even noticed it until you mentioned it. Maybe it’s because my max heart rate is high?
💯🏅💯
Cruel sport...but can't have the highs without the lows!
Good point. The lows create the highs! You’re right.
Through your watch in the nearest trash can....how do you think we did it before all this shit came along???? Your body is NOT a computer !!!!
Good luck !!!!
This is a really interesting comment! For the last 2-3 years I didn’t wear a watch. I ran by feel and by time. But I do find I like the days when I’m aiming for a specific time.
I do sometimes miss the good old days though (pre GPS watch) when you had no idea what pace you were running and the only time you knew if you were going to run well or not was when the finish line clock came into view!
