Kieran, as an academy goalkeeper I absolutely hate diving on artificial grass, and I have the burns and scars to prove it. Artificial is just so bad on skin, and you get turf burns very easily. Good quality grass pitches allow you to glide better in the dive, as there's much less friction - particularly when there's dew or water on the surface. But the worst is dry dirt. I'd take the 1 pound pitch over artificial if it's wet and a bit muddy, but if the grass is dry no chance. I generally wear a baselayer/tights to protect my elbows and hips if I'm training but not for match days.
yeah, I play in goal for my local team and I absolutely hate playing in the summer when the ground is dry. You just graze your knees. If I play on artificial I'll usually wear base layers on my legs which helps a lot with the burns

the 1 pound pitch is literally what we play on for our sunday league, the goals are all dirt and rocks and sometimes broken glass. The only difference being that the paint is slightly more visible once you get close enough to it
