- A new Neptunia Sisters vs Sister patch changes various dialogue. The language in Nep games is pretty tame to begin with, so these changes are quite unexpected.

From what I heard recently:
It’s really has to do with the fact that someone forgot to add “Language” into the rating description, all Neptunia games are T rated and have “Language” in the descriptions, so this is really a result of accidental “false marketing”, so they either had to censor themselves or recall every physical copy, which would be expensive, and re release all copies with the “language” fix
That is so lame lol
Physical copies? I mean really, how many of those are even out in the wild? Last I checked physical has been on the decline in the states, let alone niche franchises like Neptunia. Seeing an actual day one release box copy of a Neptunia game in the states is like a fucking unicorn. Like, did this count for CERO too? I'd imagine not and I highly doubt they actually ship that many physical copies nowadays (also the game was only released on PC and PS4/PS5, so it's not like it was released on Switch too, most sales for these games are digital now, and physical sales usually come from limited editions).
@@mitrikgaduk347 You might be correct that there likely weren't many physical copies of SVS made however you also have to consider that IFI is not a huge company and even a small scale recall might translate into a big financial hit. As such it makes sense that they decided to solve this via a patch. The bigger issue is that IFI didn't communicate this clearly (as can be seen in the confusion in this very video) thus leading to accusations of intentional censorship from some fans.
@@electricindigoball1244 Honestly at this point can we consider them an Indie studio? Like, is Super Giant Games bigger than them at this stage? Cause' that's pretty pitiful. Iffy publishes numerous games, we're also talking about Compile Heart. They've been involved in numerous ventures and have partnered with various other companies. Hell, they even have exclusives with Sony, so I wanna call some bullshit on this excuse we all keep making. That's like saying Marvelous is about as small as them and that couldn't be further from the case (otherwise why would Sony bother buying them out?).
Yes, I the primary issue is the lack of communication and the shadow-censorship, that's abundantly clear to anyone at this point. But the way it was gone about doing and excuses people are making for them is what you are ignoring. I refuse to believe that Iffy and Compile Heart are literally comparable to Indie Devs that release games every 3-4 years.
(I only use SGG as an example because currently they are known for Hades, but their releases have been incredibly slow, I wouldn't call them a AAA studio at this point even with their successes, they simply don't have the manpower to do so, regardless of the fact that they are behind games like Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre which it should be noted the amount of time it's been between those releases. They literally only have 20 employees, I don't believe Iffy or Compile have fucking 20 people working for them.)
@@mitrikgaduk347 I always saw Compile Heart as a AA studio and from what I understood IF is not much bigger but maybe I'm mistaken. I did a quick search and I found one source that claims that CH has 31 employees. Obviously the difference between indie and AA isn't set in stone but IMO once the team size is large enough where it is not feasible for all people in the team to know each other (and by "know" I mean more than a person's name, face and position) then it can no longer be considered an indie studio and 31 is beyond that number. CH also doesn't count as an indie studio to me because it depends on IF for publishing (it's also owned by IF and I don't think we would call studios owned by, for example, EA or Ubisoft "indie").
Also can we really call this "shadow-censorship" when IFI has posted a blog post outlining exactly which lines they are changing down to whether the line had a voice line associated with it? In most cases these days when a game publisher gets accused of censorship it happens after the fact and the company in question doesn't even acknowledge it. Other than not being precise on the exact reason why the change is being made, IFI is way more transparent than I would have expected by the standards of other companies.
I think one of the main reasons why Idea Factory International had to update the dialog because if you look at the ESRB notes for the reason why it has a Teen rating its missing the Language or Strong Language. Since the game does have some Language (or what the ESRB consider as language) its misleading that the game doesn't contain language. Probably someone at the ESRB got word that the game contains some type of language and now IFI has to comply or face fines.
And Neptunia games have swearing in them before but those were M rated.
@@KazeShikamaru Neptunia was always rated T, it was Neptunia mk2 that was rated M
Ahh, the second Nepgear game just narrowly avoided an M-rating when the first one had one.
I have a feeling that M-rating are gonna be a recurring thing with her.
We all know most of the censored lines mostly are for Blanc/White Heart. It sucks considering that is pretty much part of her character.
@☄️センス☄️ not to mention, her vulgarity is based on Nintendo’s Conkers Bad Fur Day, so it also ruining an inside joke of gaming history on top of ruining someone’s character (at this point it’s character assassination)
You guys are overreacting way too much... saying this "killed" Blanc's character for "eternity" is the saddest and stupidest thing you people can say... smh.
Purple heart also says piss in her EXE attack so it’s not just Blanc
@@aloelover6012 ikr, she can still be a good character without cursing constantly. Honestly let’s be real here, is it really necessary?
@@darkk_darkk Yes cause that's her character from day one. She always been like that for over 15+ years "that" is her character.
It is wild we censor "pissed" and "bastard" but then ignore themes and language in rap music, or shows targeted at teens like Euphoria. I'll never understand why gaming is treated so differently.
Because it is a different medium and format.
Its because its a JP dev. ESRB hates anything from asia and they will bend the knee for anything american. How do you think Last of Us 2 didn't get an adults only rating with having a full sex scene?
@Goro Majima That's my point though. Why we treat gaming different from every other entertainment medium is strange.
yeah and politics deceit
@@KazeShikamaru Except it shouldn't be treated differently. Why should games, especially overseas ones be far, far more restricted than music videos? I'm not saying it's music videos that should be restricted, it's the games that shouldn't be.
Guess I’ll grab the pirate copy from fit girl that won’t be censored
At this point the ESRB needs a T15+ rating. The censorship of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe in North America back in 2009 is another prime example of why a higher version of the T rating is needed. Although it's kind IFI's fault for not having the language descriptor before
Continued:
I would consider this as a repeat of the Halo 2 .ass error controversy where it's map edit showed a picture of a Bungie dev's ass (mooning at then Microsoft president Steve Ballmer) when there was an error. That alone forced Microsoft to delay the PC copies of Halo 2, added the Nudity descriptor and Microsoft lost $500,000 afterwards
I agree. Considering t can be too vague and is between e and m ratings I would agrree.
Wonder how long Modders in PC will take to fixed unncessary censored text & dialogue.
The last time I remember that happening was the alternate translation patch that a bunch of modders did to change some of the dialogue in the Re;Birth games to closely resemble the Japanese version. There were pros and cons to it, but they were mostly made if you're playing with Japanese voices.
I'm not even sure if there is an active modding community for the Neptunia games after V-II.
@@NoxinPistol Got rid of stupid jokes at least.
I didn't they bother to change it as this isn't a deal breaker.
wait the patch is for pc too??
Others have stated it before, but that is the case - the ESRB label simply didn't have "language" on it. So rather than recall all the disc copies sold, they patched it so the ESRB rating was accurate to the product - then for parity & consistency purposes, mirrored the patch to Steam.
I feel bad for Blanc though; Noire got one more over on her with this.
I know how bad this stupid game is!
Microsoft went through a similar issue with the PC version of Halo 2 when it was discovered when it's map editor had an image of a Bungie dev mooning at then Microsoft president Steve Ballmer when an error occurred. Microsoft basically delayed the game and added the Nudity descriptor to all copies of Halo 2 PC, although it ended up eventually costing Microsoft $500,000
Seeing most of these comments saying that this is censorship is kind of missing some context since why this is happening was pretty much an accident. If you haven't read the few comment that are like mines (and you definitely should), you would see on SVS's cover that someone forgot to add "Language" into the rating description. Since they didn't have that part, they had three options. The first option was to get fine up to $1 million dollars, the second was to call back all the physical copies (which is also expensive), or the third option was to patch it up (which was cheaper). And guess which option they picked?
This is strange since the previous games always had this and it was strange that they made a mistake that seemed so simple. My guess is that they were doing the simultaneous releases of the PC Port and the Console Releases, and somehow forgot to add it in since they were focusing on those releases. That's just a guess and nothing more but that's the only reason why this happened since they never did a simultaneous releases before. Though I know that this won't happen again, why? Since on the new Fairy Fencer game, they have "Language" as one of the rating description.
I don't like that fact that the esbr is forcing change on a product that I ALREADY paid hard earned money for! I expect it to be the definitive experience, I don't want it altered after release! BTW, I simply won't be updating my game, ever!
This is the first time I've actively avoided a patch in any game, especially since it doesn't actually fix anything like typos or glitches. I'd rather just uninstall my disc, reinstall it, then delete the update every time I turn my console on instead of dealing with censorship. Also since my save is apparently unaffected, I don't care.
We need to tell these companies that censoring needs to stop enough with this its ridiculous we deserve what we pay for
How about read first before saying this?
@@Generalmoxin yes,, it is sad but they fucked the rating up for esrb so they had to patch or revoke every physical copy from stores.... guess what solution is cheaper and simpler?

@@KazeShikamaru Dude, relax. Not everyone needs to be a keyboard warrior.

Well that's super weird and pointless.
Okay so it seems the company forgot to mention strong language is on them. This is on the company and no one else. That is an epic fail.
Because of missing a descriptor yeah makes sense to inform consumers for sure. But then again they could have just added a profanity filter option like CODBOPs 2/Gears 360 entries had.
Why do companies need change Nep games, it's literally for teens in age rating. TV shows for teens that are live action or have references to things have more swearing and worse swearing then many censored here. Why does Nep need to be for everyone.
I think some companies could learn from a profanity filter option in their games not have everyone have to deal with everyone getting the censored version. I mean Japan has Z rated violent versions of games, no ecchi scenes visual novel versions exist too, so a profanity filter option isn't that hard.
Besides you can get a magazine with stuff on the front cover, maybe inside and yet you can't have animated characters look a certain way like come on. The Censored Gaming video on that just sticks in my mind. The PS Magazines of the 2000s yeah that was weird when I saw that in Caddicarus cover that for the British versions of the magazines that I can understand.
The suffer and others do seem off. Also no butt either huh. Keep both the clean and the swearing version for people via an option I think is best. Then again the west has characters swear (even if games or ratings have changed from some M to T I've heard and things yes have changed over time) but anime games eh it is awkward.
I think swearing makes sense in the right context though but I don't hate seeing it. Then again you have other games at least with my rating system with some things that I get why if the setting makes it clear it can with signs of war (so I don't find the swearing that off to be included) like Valkyria Chronicles but others I'd have though it was PG then M like Dragon Quest Heroes but it says M/Teen and I barely even noticed the references that made it T or M in the first place because it was so little or light more to a PG anyway I couldn't tell.
I never got phased by Star Wars to COD (did the red screens bother me yes but I got over it). Same with having anime games with an R rating I'm surprised some are digital only because my stores won't carry them but I can pick up Conception Plus physical with implied things then well staring at 3D models option if you even know how to access it/underwear in Gal Gun 2/Double Peace and Returns is Teen/M15 so no idea why I can't pick that up physical still oh wait. Senran Kagura also digital only too.
Thank you for this info, dood! I'm turning off all auto-updates.
Shame on IF and Compile Heart. Also, Bastard Sword is an actual real-world sword.
Why
Okay I'll get the time machine ready to tell off all those knights and historians of medieval times who called it a bastard sword. Didn't they think of the children? The children!
I am sure Teens have never heard any of these words before.
This changes scene context, composition, tone etc. I hope modders can release a patch to revert these changes. Thank you for covering this, as I haven't come across anyone else shedding light on it.
Well, you are in luck. I would google "PC Gaming Wiki Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters". On that game's PC Gaming Wiki page, look for a section called "Decensor Patch". This patch works for both the GOG and Steam versions on PC.
The fact that this happened because Idea Factory forgot to put "Strong Language" for the T rating is unbelievably sad... shows how incompetent Idea Factory is theses days.
Thats on the ESRB and other rating boards
@@Toast0nyx Even if that‘s on the ESRB, IF‘s management is really bad. They could have way more success if they reconsidered their priorities. Focus on just core franchises and put a bit more time and budget into them.
japanese companies never get blamed for anything @@anabang1251
The bigest issue here is that IFI didn't communicate the exact reason for the changes (lack of "Language" in the raiting description). The way I see it IFI should make it possible for people to re-enable the old script with, for example, a free "original script DLC". This might be enough to repair part of the damage done by this announcement until Neptunia GameMaker R:Evolution releases in Japan in August (since it will also release on Switch there is a possibility that it might include fan service content that was missing from SVS which was originally released only for the PS4).
Lament and suffer sounds like a threat of violence. Lol
If they wanted to get an E rating then I understand. But it already has a T.
If they wanted a profanity filter they could to make it T but still offer bother versions of the dialogue/text but if CH and IF aren't going to allow that level of altering the game because they won't allow edits like that (who knows but anime companies want the animation to stay and only audio to change so game companies I'd assume it could be similar) only the text/audio the localisation team can do then well that's that as well.
I think a filter solution makes sense to offer to 'everyone' that way with a 'choice' besides a descriptor update then an E for everyone.
And that's why I stopped letting my games update ever since Borderlands 2 when characters stopped saying funny line's 😎
TLoU2: Hardcore s*x between realistic 3D models.
Playstation: This is fine.
Neptunia: Bastard Sword.
Playstation: Wow, this is a chrisrian company you can't say that!
lol that wasn't hardcore wtf are you on?
This was disappointing. Censorship sucks. :(
It’s so weird when you consider T-rated games like Uncharted have WAY more swearing. Also Bastard Sword isn’t even a curse word, it’s just the formal title. Definitely the weirdest change! Also, are you enjoying Atelier Ryza 3 and should we expect a review soon? It’s a huge game so I understand if you are taking your time with it. It’s an easy contender for my game of the year
Agreed Uncharted and others do have the swearing kept (many western games get away with things that anime games don't though), no profanity filter option either as a solution to this Nep censoring is odd did no one in the company think about an option to remove text and dialogue redubbing or toggle for either or is CH and IF too particular about games having alters for that sort of thing because the localisation can only change the text and audio only? (COD Black Ops 2 and Gears I forget which entries had them in the PS3/360 era but no one does them now).
I see games like Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 have Teen/M and Valkyria Chronicles 4 (with war themes and swearing I can see why it makes sense) but I couldn't tell you a single swear or sexual reference (violence level I'd say fit PG or M depending on the scenes) in Dragon Quest Heroes even though the descriptors say it has them at least in my region.
Many teen TV shows have deeper level swearing.
Void Bastards or others are available for people to get no one talks about that with a title censor at all do they? I've never heard of anything because it's not been censored or talked about I think and it's as front and centre as can be.
because the japanese language doesn't have swear words like most countries do@@suntannedduck2388
It is not good to do it, but the pirated versions on PC will be saved from this part, since those words are from blanck/White Heart and she will lose some of the personality that she has (That has always been characterized and gives more freedom) a real shame
Senran is over, neptunia seems to just be going down hill all the niche jrpg type games are just getting cancelled into oblivion.
Meanwhile, this game's target audience is busy watching Japanese Vtubers that drop f bombs in the most cursed yet absolutely adorable way imaginable. I should know. I am one of them.
Idea Factory International: "We won't localize any games that have to be censored."
Also Idea Factory International: _[every single_ Neptunia _game released since has had risqué CGs censored on Sony's consoles, and now this]_
Well, that statement aged like _milk._
Also, extra disappointing considering that swearing is supposed to be one of Blanc's characteristic personality traits. Remember the scene in _Re;Birth1_ where Arfoire's clone of Blanc couldn't copy the real Blanc's foul mouth? That's what the _real_ Blanc has sounded like for _years,_ to the point that there's a scene in _Cyberdimension_ (2017) where White Heart says "frick" and the other characters act like she just dropped a C-bomb.
I think you are missing the mark.
Good thing I hadn't bought it, guess its of the wishlist, definitely appreciate the heads up.
Y'know, they could've just bleeped all the words instead to cut the re-recording costs, also would've been way funnier that way at least.
Also isn't it cute how Europe has to suffer along with this, just so we don't have an advantage lol
Wait, so the revised audio is only for the DUB or is it also for the original JP Audio? If it's only a DUB edit, then it doesn't really affect people who only play with the JP Audio, well other than the literal mistranslations.
I don't think they explained which ones.
I assume English as it's the one people are likely to notice more and care more about the swearing being relates to for the audience that picks it up that isn't well us anime/JRPG fans that don't really care.
Besides who notices the swearing in Japanese audio anyway and most of the time I didn't think Japanese swear in games and anime not much at least it's very infrequent. They don't very much from what I have seen of subtitled works and do notice which are Japanese swears and which are not as we do over time just like any other Japanese terms we pick up on. Kusor (going by sound) or however it's spelt.
@@suntannedduck2388 You'd be surprised how often it happens in Anime, again, depends on what you watch, so to each their own on that one. I've noticed mistranslations to cover up swearing for example in numerous games actually. At the end of the day it has nothing to do with "who notices it", it's whether or not it's being changed due to censorship (which in this case it VERY much so is).
Honestly I'd wager it's unlikely they censored the JP audio, simply put it'd be too much of a pain, and JP fans are far less tolerant to such changes. (Ahem, Switch Sales vs Censorstation Sales, there were numerous reports, doesn't help that many niche franchises refuse to publish on Censorstation but I digress.)
Whaaaaaaa
Dollars to apples that Nexus or ModDB will have the "restoration patch" ready the day before tomorrow on this matter...
Does the patch make any changes to the Japanese text or voice lines?
Before your video went up I had looked in on the update hoping for new bathing suits and saw this word changing Crap and I said WTF Is this 😎
To the folks at Idea Factory: let this be a lesson to all of ya'.
Thanks for the heads up!
HUH? Swears in Neptunia is funny
At least they didn't forgot to put a relevant descriptor with Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord, that game doesn't even have English voices unlike Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters, and even so, the new Fairy Fencer F has always had a content descriptor of ''Language'', according to the ESRB, the words ''shit'' and ''asshole'' appear in the game, so, yeah, language and swearing is extremely common in T rated games.
IFI is really losing balls slowly from the time Sony yanked their chain.
Yep, you give the karens their way once - they automatically think they own everything
The question is: Why IF wants so badly T-rating (or PEGI16)? Does teenager customers even care about some niche Neptunia games? I hardly imagine that even 5% of sold copies is bought by players below 18.
I understand the reason this happened, as others have stated. But I always find censoring so strange. All the death and violence you could ever want is FINE, but a swear word? Ohhhh that's too much for precious teens. They've never heard a swear word before. WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN.
Yep, pretty sure that everyone heard their parents swear at least once before they became a teenager (I sure know I did, that's 98% of what comes out of my mother's mouth)
death and violence have a lot more nuance and more freedom when it comes to story telling swear does not
2024年春、四女神オンラインのswitch版発売を希望します^ - ^
Kinda nuts that you have to content-label yourself upfront in order to even get a chance of publishing a game. And if you misslabel you can get sued. Or if you don't label you have to wait until a rating agency actually gets around rating your game. Really backwards and bureaucratic mechanisms.
Ouch well saw that coming …. First no more anime fanservice with various jrpg games and now they’re nerfing vulgar dialogue for the cpu goddess in story and gameplay audio etc … smh 😅😅😅
hm... why i sense this be Blanc wil say ?
I always hate it when English translations for Japanese games and anime add in random swearing, so this sounds like an improvement. It's annoying that the translation was improved by censorship though.
Translation: pick up the switch version if available
This might not get a Switch port since it requires lots of power to run it. Samevwith 4 goddesses online and virtual stars
Oh for fuck sake. How much needless downgrading will keep happening to modern media.
While okay, not a big deal removing some swearing (even though some of these cases are really weird), BUT. In the Neptunia franchise swearing is very limited anyway. And the only characters that do actually swear have that as part of their character. Like Blanc who swears when she is pissed off, which accentuates that she is really mad. Or Iffy and Uzume who sometimes swear to show them as the "cool" characters. Or hell, Underling, who swears because she doesnt give a shit. Law cant stop her.
This is so disappointing to see more and more needless censorships happen in games.
As annoying as this is what really worries me is the future implications for localizing dialogue based on woke identity politics. I just saw recently on another channel Erick Landon RPG that a Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force was "politicized," but without knowing more it could be mild or it could be a bunch of characters suddenly complaining about how it's "homophobic/racist" to not agree with raging leftist rainbow propaganda.
I don't really care about these changes but it sure is strange.
I could understand some changes, though I've always been (and will forever be) staunchly against censorship.
Besides, the obvious point I would've mentioned that you already do, that turning foul language into violence and threats as if better, but anyone that censors factual, historically accurate terms like "bastard sword"--literally a "man and a half" sword--is a complete dumbass.
Ftr, I don't mind "piss me off" changes since it's a complete misuse anyway. Coincidentally, that actually does piss me off: I want nothing of it, in fact, I'd rather be nowhere near that BS radar red-metering pap.
