So Zukos great-grandfathers are Fire lord Sozin and Avatar Ruko. Avatar Roku and his wife Ta Min had a daughter named Rina, and Rina had a daughter named URSA (mother of zuko). WHILE , Firelord Sozin has a son FIRE LORD AZULON, father of firelord Ozai.
Sozin never actually intended Roku to die in that volcano. He came there to help his friend but he saw an opportunity after Roku breathed the toxic gas. He said "My plans are suddenly possible", which means it triggers his idea to continue on his plan to conquer the whole world.
I think the point is that Sozin could still have gone either way at that point. He was not fully good or evil, but he choose, at that moment, the wrong path, with terrible consequences. That is the point this series makes again and again, that nobody is inherently evil; but when balance is lost, people become evil.
This episode is certainly one of my favorites. As for why Sozin initially helped Roku only to later betray him, it's a compelling exploration of Sozin's complex motivations and the dynamics of their friendship. Sozin initially arrived at Roku's island after feeling the eruption nearly 100 miles away, prompted by his friendship with Roku. He intended to help his troubled friend, with his loyalty to Roku still intact. However, upon seeing Roku in a near-death state, Sozin's ambitions took hold, and he recognized the opportunity to realize his goals of expanding the Fire Nation. Consequently, he made the fateful decision to let Roku perish, prioritizing his personal aspirations over his loyalty and purported friendship. This narrative illustrates a stark example of human greed overshadowing genuine connections and commitments. nice reaction, can't wait for the finale❤
It's very similar to what Zuko did at the end of Book 2, Zuko was in the verge of changing his way, but presented with his old desire he changed back to his old ambition.
12:37 One of my favorite frames in the whole show. Zuko is outside and free but suffering and surrounded by darkness. Iroh is locked in a cell but at peace and bathed in light. It's so good.
The royal artifact that Iroh gives to Zuko is not from Roku. It is Iroh's. Remember Iroh is the first born, he's suppose to be the the Fire Lord instead of Ozai. And Iroh suppose to pass the royal artifact crown to his son Lu Ten. Since he passed away, he passed it to Zuko because he is the crown prince now, and because Iroh also already sees Zuko as his own son. Iroh is just the best😢
It doesn't matter if it's the real artifact or not - although I think it's Roku's artifact. Iroh might regain it. The point is that since Sozin “breaks from the path of righteousness", in some ways he is no longer “the rightful Fire Lord.” It symbolizes the "good" Fire Nation or "honor" of the royal family, which is why it could only be found by Iroh (after he changed) and only worn by Zuko - even if it may not be the "real" one.
@@iustinmatei5655 It would have been buried under volcanic ash so I doubt it would have been possible for Sozin to do it. Or even if Iroh tried to excavate it decades later.
@@ApexCalibre I meant, first thing that Sozin would've done when he came to the island would be to go to Roku's house, where he could find that thing, on the floor. Then he went to aid Roku on the vulcano. Or maybe, they just make another one, after Sozin gave his away, so his heir (Azulon) would have one too.
The tragedy is that Souzin actually came to help his friend, only thinking about helping his friend, despite their falling out ... only realizing what this meant as he saw Roku fall to the ground .... and giving in to his worst he left him to die ...
I love how the beginning scene of young Roku and Sozin shows how Sozin stops Roku from falling (dying) but eventually let’s him go and he drops to the ground. We saw the type of man Sozin was from the beginning 😭 amazing writing
The lore drop in this episode is my favorite of the entire show (and other media I've seen)! I have so many favorite episodes, but this reigns supreme. Sometimes I wish I could watch it for the first time and re-live the shock 10 year old me got. No matter how many times I watch it, I always get chills when the Fire Sages say, "It's an honor to serve you, Avatar Roku." Thanks for the great reaction guys! I was anticipating this episode for you and glad you liked it!
Thanks for watching! This was a great episode! Nice to get a bit of lore! One of the best eps of the season for sure but the finale is just perfection!
8:45 something I've just noticed is that Roku does not use the avatar state very much here. we know that fully realized avatars can basically flip it like a light switch, so he could have just had it on, and I'd say it's likely that he could've saved his home with that power, but if he had died suddenly (like when he inhaled the gas) that would've ended the cycle of reincarnation, so he probably didn't want to risk it
5:11 really interesting bit of lore on this, the "opposites are harder to master" thing isn't about an Avatar's native element, but their mentality/approach to bending. Aang had so much difficulty with earthbending because of how much the mentality of that style conflicted with his own upbringing as an airbender, not necessarily because earth is air's opposite. The last Earth-born Avatar, Kyoshi, also struggled the most with earthbending despite it being her native element. Basically, if Aang's approach to bending was more aligned to earthbending than it originally was, he would've had significantly less trouble learning it (though we shouldn't forget that he became a highly adept earthbender within about 6 months, which is still astonishing progress).
Not true. Korra just decided to change basic lore from the original series. Just like they changed the way people learned bending. Instead of people learning from the original benders (moon, badger moles, dragons, sky bison.) Instead, they changed it to the lion turtles just handing them the element. Another contradiction. Korra contradicts ATLA several times which is why I'm not a fan of the show.
Well kyoshi only have trouble with precision she doesn't have trouble bending earth while Aang can't even bend earth for the first time same like korra can't even bend a slight air for the first time.Earth wasn't kyoshi hardest element it was water as stated by herself in the shadow of kyoshi.
This is why the Southern Raiders attacked the water tribe and would take their benders. If Aang had died with the airbenders then the next avatar would've been a bender from the water tribe. They wanted to spawn kill each avatar until it would be reborn in the fire nation.
Firelord Azulon comes out with an idea to add Avatar Roku bloodline into his grand child in hope that his grandchild bloodline with be powerful. But it's seems to he a backfired with Zuko turmoil inside of him. I suggest you read the comic "The Search" to find out more about Zuko's mother and why she was banished from the royal palace.
I haven't commented since Season 1 but I just wanted to let you guys know that I've really been enjoying these reactions guys :) Hope u guys have a good week🎉🎉
Master Sud is the character that we see earthbending in the intro. Plus what is interesting about this episode is the emphasis on what is the struggling of a normal avatar training during a time of peace : been revealed about your identity from the age of 16 and spend a large part of your life learning the other elements... Aang had to do this at the age of 12 and less than a year...
I commented this in other reaction videos of this episode: The conflict and conclusion between Roku and Sozin actually were foreshadowed in their firebending spar in the palace yard when they were teenagers. 1. Roku and Sozin were fighting: firebending spar not speaking to each other for 25 years 2. Force of nature knocked Roku down: tree root volcano eruption 3. Sozin came to rescue: holding unbalanced Roku helping Roku containing the eruption 4. In the end, Sozin let Roku fall: releasing Roku from his hand leaving Roku to his death
So basically Sukos Mother is a direct descendant from Avatar Roku. Sukos father is the direct descendant of Fire Lord Sozin. The reason why both happen to interconnect is because of the theory that fire lord Azulan wanted to opt in on marrying powerful families so that their blood will be stronger.
My understanding is that pretty much every avatar has to clean up the mistakes/unfinished business of the previous one. The expanded lore for Roku, Kyoshi, Karuk, Yangchen reveals this pattern.
Now it all explains how Zuko is feeling so lost in himself. Not about the scar, or anything else, it is all because of being misguided for which path to follow after discovering his important ancestors: Roku's path for balance or Sozin's path for supremacy. Two most powerful men whose blood passed onto their children able to be consumed unknowingly for what is right or wrong because of the power none of them would be able to understand truly what it is and how to use it safely. Zuko must have been in absolute torture, like an innocent's life being cursed by the never-ending war between the two great-grandfathers, even though he didn't ask to be part of it. If that happens to him, what about his sister Azula? When will she ever realize what vile power is eating her alive? Manipulation? Greed? Her mother? Father? Enviousness? Anxiety?

Eh. The movie isn't so bad it harms anything, it's just soulless and mediocre. It's a fairly direct beat-by-beat compressed retelling of Book 1, but there's nothing that makes it *worth* spending time watching if you've already watched the superior animated series.
That’s the point of the whole show all the elements are connected to each other for example you can’t have fire without air fire needs oxygen that’s why it’s believed that monk gueutso killed all the invading fire nation soldiers at the air temple by draining all the air out of the room the fire benders couldn’t Bend anymore and they all died
"And being the Avatar doesn't hurt your chances with the ladies either". Well, for me it would be something to avoid. Marrying the Avatar is like marrying a president or prime minister, he or she will have time for the world, but not for you and for your kids. Too busy to be a family man/woman.
