    I thought I was crazy when i kept undervolting my 6950 and saw more fps each time I thought I was crazy. Turns out it really just gives performance. It made more sense when I switched to a ryzen cpu and it's overclocking worked similarly with PBO.

    • @mikehawk6918
      @mikehawk6918 6 месяцев назад +15

      It's because of power limits. 1 Watt = 1 Amp * 1 Volt. If you decrease the voltage, you directly decrease the power draw, and because the cards are power limited in the bios, they can boost to a higher frequency before they hit that power limit (or thermal throttle). PBO works the same way, it boost your CPU within the power limits. You can also manually boost the CPU beyond the default power limits without undervolting though, unlike the GPUs.

      @AELabsHonkai what model do you have? I have the base model and just put the power limit on MSI afterburner to 110% to consistently hit 330w so I imagine if I tweaked the voltage and memory and core frequency I would get more fps

    • @AELabsHonkai
      @AELabsHonkai 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@jaredhernandez333 I also have the reference model. I have my core at 500-2800, memory at 2360 Fast Timing, 1100 Voltage, and max power limit if i want max performance or default 0 power limit for much better temps and noise. For my OC as far as im aware the only possible way to gain more fps when power limit is maxed is to lower the voltage which can work under 1100 but it might cause driver timeouts and crash. Edit: I kind of gave up on the core frequencies because higher did not mean better on this card even if it can hit 2800mhz. I just gave it a super wide range and let it choose it's own clocks.

      @@THU31True, Undervolting can deliver more performance, especially if your hardware gets hot.
      My last card I had, I undervoted that and got slightly better performance, about 2 or 3C lower temps and the fans didn't have to work as hard, the extra performance happened by being able to maintain the boost clock more.
      On my current gpu, I Undervolted, performance didn't change but I got around the same 2 or 3C lower temps and the lower fan spin speeds.
      It's worth doing it if you can keep the same performance or gain a slight boost, you get the advantage of lower temps and the fan not having to work as hard.
      In any case, I find you have to do a few test to see where the sweet spot is for your own hardware, how far can you undervolt whiles keeping it stable and without losing any performance, or if you want, you can reduce a little performance and get a massive improvement on lower energy use and temps, which is what my brother did with his Ryzen cpu, I think he lost around 4% which honestly, you won't notice most of the time but he sliced off around 55 watts of power whiles being pushed hard and I think the temps were about 12-14C lower, in his case, the trade-off is worth it.

    The differences make total sense, it has more compute power, so when you have ray tracing it will be in an advantage compared to the 7800 XT. But the moment that the memory bandwidth starts coming into question, it's major bottleneck, then the 7800 XT is catching up, as it can fill up the bandwidth better than the 7900 GRE which is limited there. If one would put the 7800XT's Bandwidth on this card? It would also crush it there.

This is, a crazy + 450mhz(4gbps) gain. Why amd ships it with 20gbps chips and marketed it as 18gbps? Maybe because in HUB review it was faster then 7900xt in one instance anyones guess?

    I have some knowledge of basic overclocked and I think the reason you lose performance when you push the voltage is because of the power limit and higher temp. In overclock to archive the higher clock speed you need the card to be more efficient, so undervolting make the card draw less amount of power to do the same task of work as normal card.
    This make it so that higher voltage make the card reach power target before they can archived desired clock speed, also higher temp sometime reduced the clockspeed thus making it draw more power to push the clock and reach saturation much earlier than when undervolt.
    I’m also not an expert just love undervolting my gpu to get best result, I might be wrong if anyone understand it better feel free to correct me.

    AMD must have specifically had some 18.5Gbps rated GDDR6 they needed to get rid of when they released the GRE in China. They did it as a reference only card. In the near year since then, yields have gotten better. When they gave the go-ahead for board partners to sell this globally, it doesn't save them any money in the current scene to specifically purchase a lower grade of GDDR6 than they are already using in mass for the 7900XT and XTX. They are just using them same memory chips. So what you are getting is 20Gbps rated chips, so this is neither driver voodoo nor is it the least bit risky in creating instability or burning out your card by upping the memory performance to this level at the a minimum. To me, this immediately makes the GRE the most attractive card in AMD's lineup.

      Looking at how it's been overclocking I'd guess it's not downclocked 20gbit chips from the 7800xt and up, but slightly overclocked 18gbit chips from the 7700xt and down. The 7700xt and 7600xt have been selling poorly so they probably have a grip of that cheap vram. It can also depend on different vendors as well where a Nitro or Hellhound might have better memory than a bare bones reference model at MSRP.
      Also keep in mind there's still no _price_ on the Hellhound, they've only been sampled. There's no WAY it will be MSRP and if it follows traditional HH pricing it will hit $600 and match the 4070 super's price. Maybe that's why they still have no pricing this long after the GRE's launch when it can't match Nvidia's features.

      My favorite ones, are from people who now think their 7900 GRE is going to be as good as a 7900 xt. But even with the overclock it's not even close lol.
      There are many titles where that difference will be nearly mute, or very small.
      Not only does the 7900 xt have more bandwhich, it can get to 2750+ on the memory, 3k easy onthe core. Has more memory, more streams, among other things.
      Even in that synthetic it shows the GRE still lossing by a decent notch to the 7900 xt, but the 7900 xt can also do a +15% overclock.

    since most of the amd gpus are power limited (even a Vapor X 7900XTX) undervolting = less power draw = not (or not as often) hitting the power limit = more stable clocks.
    Sadly AMD took away one of the greatest tools the 6000 cards (and below) had, MPT.
    You could undervolt SoC, Mem, Core individually which lead to an even greater increase in performance + better temps.

That way you can bid all 3 manufacturers against each other and have significant cost savings. That makes faster than 18 gbps GDDR6 memory significantly more expensive. The memory supplied by the 2 manufacturers which can make faster memory is just down binned (or unbinned) faster memory (20 gbps in the case of Samsung and 24 gbps for SK Hynix). How fast the memory is on your specific card depends on which manufacturer you got and luck (remember the memory is specifically not binned to guarantee the rated speed for that manufacturer.
